Hey noojens, In the profiles thread, you only mentioned applying to Ph.D programs, it doesnt mention any Masters program. Did you apply to the MIT TPP later on? Thanks, techie

Hi KanuCanadian, Check out the results search, http://www.thegradcafe.com/survey/index.php?q=tpp or http://www.thegradcafe.com/survey/index ... policy&t=a Thanks, techie
  5. You also hit a record high yesterday, 205 visitors at the same time on thegradcafe. Congratulations.
  6. Thats excellent news younglions, I guess that the closest thing to hearing directly from the adcoms. Looks like congratulations are in order here.
  7. Hey s800x, I have not applied to this program but I have heard some rumours that the UPitt MPIA program will now have access to the Palantir software. Apparently it allows students to use the same intelligence gathering software used by the intelligence and defence agencies. Only another plus for this program. If I dont get into any programs this year, I might consider applying to this program next year, it seems to have many interesting courses.
  8. Hey Guys, I am not applying to the Harvard KSG but I know that many of you are. Don't want to alarm you but I came across this interesting statistic, apparently applications are up 35%. Not sure what to attribute this to, the Obama effect, Harvard reputation or just the economy in general? "The Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University has seen a 35-percent hike in applications for the Masters in Public Policy program, but is not planning to accept more students, wrote Doug Gavel, associate director of media relations and public affairs, in an e-mail." http://media.www.dailypennsylvanian.com ... 9345.shtml
  9. Thanks Plate. That sounds eerily similar to when pink slips are delivered, coincidence, I think not. Although for your wisdom tooth the reverse could also be true. Boyfriend: WWS accepted you with a ferrari and a maid Plate: Can I have more painkillers? *sleep*
  10. Congratulations Younglions. Nice Letter, if they are as generous with their funds as they are with their compliments, you should be set. Also congrats is due to plate or platter, in the public policy program at the University of Maryland applications are up 38% this year. The public policy school, for example, has seen a 38 percent increase in applications. Officials at the school, which only offers graduate degrees, are unsure of whether the spike is due to the economy or what they're calling the "Obama effect." http://media.www.diamondbackonline.com/ ... 3439.shtml
  11. ziraffa,i know someone who applied for the Fee Reduction Voucher Program offered by ETS, not sure if this might interest you. I have posted the link below. I am not sure if you qualify to the eligibility requirements but worth a shot. I also know that you already have written the GRE once, so not sure if you can request an exception as a special circumstance. Best of luck with it and your applications! http://www.ets.org/portal/site/ets/menu ... er_Program Fee Reduction Voucher Program ETS offers a limited number of GRE Fee Reduction Certificates on a first-come, first-served, basis that are available for college seniors and unenrolled college graduates who meet eligibility requirements. A Fee Reduction Certificate may be used for one General Test and/or one Subject Test. Eligibility for participation in the Fee Reduction Program is limited to one time only. Thereafter, the full test fee will be charged for additional tests for which the candidate registers. Individuals meeting the eligibility requirements will be required to pay 50 percent of the full test fee. The reduced fee is $70 for the General Test and $65 for a Subject Test.
  12. I agree, it makes more sense to pay an upfront fee of $120 (or $170 if you are in Canada) do better on the GRE and get a better funding offer. That initial investment of retaking the GRE can pay huge dividends. It is almost unfair to debase someone's retaking a GRE effort. In fact, even if you dont look at the funding increments, it can make a difference between an acceptance or a rejection. I guess I just didnt see those schools, most of those places except CMU I didnt look for or apply to, most places I applied didnt have such clear cutoffs. Although it would have been nicer for more information from MSPPM in terms of GPA.
  13. Wow 50% versus 28%, good thing I applied to the two year track in Pittsburgh. I chose this mostly to concentrate on advanced coursework. Although, I think the split track has huge merits. In my undergraduate background, I held internships with a few companies which helped me get a job after graduation. Many of my friends who pursued the non internship option with higher grades were still having trouble finding jobs. I can see that there really is no substitute for real world work experience. Not sure if this is only true in engineering and not public policy, but that is what I think. younglions, did they give you final numbers after the deadline passed, I would think a lot of people submitted applications in the last few days, making that 60 number jump higher? Just trying to crunch some numbers, the website says 68 go into two year track and 31 in the one year. If 17 go in the split two year track, does that mean there are 51 spots in the two year Pittsburg or Australia, and at 50% that means about a 100 people applied?

I know it doesnt really fall under Engineering but its the closest category to this program. This forum has very little in terms of applicants or information on this program except about Pepper White. Has anyone else applied for the Technology and Policy Program at MIT for Fall 2009, any feedback/concerns about it?
  15. I have to agree, I think that most people don't post their statistics. However, thinking about this rationally , I doubt that only those with 3.7-4.0 GPAs are the only ones who get in. If that was the case then these programs would be competing with the computer science GPA entrances for MIT which are reputed to be in that range. Most of the public policy programs don't even make GPA cutoffs available on their Admissions/FAQ pages, whether it is because it is too high or too low I will let you figure that out. I find it hard to believe that only those with high GPA/GREs get in. On the other hand, I am sure they are able to garner more offers. Just my two cents.
  16. I have been lurking in this forum for a while and just recently got around to posting on it (partly intimidation by the high GPA and GREs). I see a lot of people who have applied to most of the other schools, just curious if there are others on this board who have applied to the MSPPM at Carnegie Mellon. It is the only program I have applied to for Public Policy work due to the courses they offer which interest my technical undergraduate and work background, since my background is Software Engineering. If you did apply to this program, how did you decide between the split 2 year track (D.C./Pitt) and the 2 year track in Pittsburgh.
  17. Congrats policy_applicant on your admit, you have a strong profile. Hopefully you get some good funding.
