  1. The results on the board from last year indicates that they had some sort of rolling admissions. Also, if you are international, that may always play in. Other than that I can not help you. I wish you good luck though. Have you applied elsewhere?
  2. Have to say that I laughed when I saw your post. I wonder if the adcoms did it on purpose. Anyways, good luck to you, I'll keep my fingers crossed that you'll get in.
  3. According to the boards: University of Colorado - Boulder, Geography Masters (F11) Accepted via E-mail on 19 Feb 2011 TAship. So I think they have started sending out results (over 2 weeks ago it seems).
  4. Yes, as the organ girl wrote. There will be a fee introduced from fall 2011 for all non-EU citizens (some exceptions for Norweigians and Swiss). More information about it can be found at: https://www.studera.nu/studera/4673.html According to VHS (the govermental body that organizes applications) the number of foreign applicants fell 79% this year (http://www.studentliv.se/nyhet/dramatisk-minskning-av-utl%C3%A4ndska-studenter-4808 (in Swedish)). However, I think areas of study other than English will see the majority of that loss. If you are ready to pay for a masters, Sweden is definitely a nice place.
  5. Congrats! I am sure you will have a good chance for a perfect record. Have you heard back on the funding from West Virginia?
  6. Hahaha, that's brilliant. I assume that you are applying for a PhD in zoological gender studies with a minor in sci-fi? Yeah, I doubt I will join Facebook. Too late to jump on the train now anyways. Yes, I definitely think you are right. However, I have heard several stories about PoIs and Grad School profiles that want to befriend prospect students on Facebook. I can imagine that some people would hesitate to turn them down, especially if they are in a small and narrow field of studies (where you would come in contact with the PoI at some point in your career). Perhaps it is not so much partying and the nature of the persons social life but how 'mature' they act. I know more than a handful of straight-A students who post the most childish things on eachother's walls.
  7. Yes, not impossible. I am leaning towards UMn so.. Anyways, congrats!
  8. I am not in political science but I found this very interesting. Thank you for taking the time.
  9. I've always kept this in mind. However, threads like these makes me even more nervous. The day before I received my first acceptance I googled myself for the first time ever (I've always said I would never do that). Ironically, I was sad to see that I had nothing to worry about. My WWW-imprint is next to nothing. Maybe I should join Facebook? (cant believe I'm even considering it!!).
  10. Many of the grad schools have statistics for previous years if that is any help. An example: UNC 2009 Geography Grad (no info on Ph.D vs. MA) - 112 applied, 14 were accepted, 7 enrolled. Average of accepted students GRE: V625, Q705, W4.8 GPA: 3.515 Good luck to you!
  11. Reminds me of certain parts of Ljubljana too but it could easily be somewhere else. I doubt it is in Holland or Belgium, more likely Bayern (Bavaria), Czech Republic or Slovakia judging from the houses.
  12. I think you shouldn't worry too much. From what I understood it's more if the Department has missed any of the entry requirements e.g. the Grad School may not recognize a foreign 3-yr degree as equivalent to a US 4-yr. Stuff like that.
  13. I am leaning more and more towards going to Minneapolis and have some questions about housing. I know it has been discussed to some extent in this thread during the last years but I thought I'd see if there is any advice for me. I am looking for: - Studio or 1BR. - Within walking/bicycling distance of the U. - Within walking distance of shops selling groceries (fresh foodstuffs). - As few UGs as possible. My budget will be around $800 on rent per month. What areas should I concentrate looking at?
  14. Thank you. She wants/wanted to come with me but would most likely not get a VISA and even if she did she would not be able to work. My 14K/yr GA would not support us both in the long run and I would also have felt bad taking her away from her family. Then again, if she was the "right" one I would have stayed. I take comfort that this was just not meant to be. Best of luck to you. If you both are that commited, a big hurdle has been passed.
  15. I've always seen myself as a hopeless romantic and at one stage I was probably open to accepting a less interesting offer. However, the whole application process has put some tension into the relationship and well.. I think for the last couple of months I've been (unconsciously) tested her to see if it is really worth it. Harsh as it may sound, I do not think it is. A long-distance relationship is not an option for me.
  16. I received an acceptance letter from my "first" school this week but have not told her that I will leave for the US during the summer. She is away with her family over the weekend and I didn't want to spoil that for her. Have a bottle of Dom PĂ©rignon (2000) chilled which really was meant to celebrate grad school admissions. That and then dinner. And then I'll break the news on Tuesday or something.. Gah.
  17. Most likely will end up at UMn too. Quite excited to be honest. I have a ton of questions about Minnesota (and the US in general) so I will be sure to drop by here often. From what I've understood of this thread, public transport in Minneapolis is quite good by American standards?
  18. Accepted at University of Minnesota, 14k/year (+ health). Applied for an MA but the letter says 5 years guaranteed support. Cant complain though.
  19. Accepted! I feel so relieved. GA $14K as well. Weird thing is that I recieved word from a European university aswell (about 2 hours earlier) with 3 year full funding (without GA responsibilities). Lovely, agonizing dilemma.
  20. I recieved an informal email from a POI. CC'ed to what I figured out to be my "main competition". The other person used a private email-adress while I was using my university one. Since I am not on Facebook or any other social networking site, I felt quite safe. However, with nerves being shaky and no admission result given I of course started to look into the other person. It is unbelievable how many traces a person can leave online. Now I can not seem to shake of the "stalker"-feeling about myself and I feel slightly bad.
  21. First of all, congrats! Must feel good to have one foot in the door at least. Hope the GTA comes through for you. I am still awaiting a decision. What makes it slightly worse is that I have only applied to one US university and I would really like to attend.. I should know within a couple of weeks (that's what I am telling myself anyways).
  22. Know the feeling. What makes it worse is that I only applied to one US university so the other UK/European ones can come back to me anytime. I am on needles around the clock.
  23. Interesting page ZeChocMoose. Was not aware that among Americans, women have gotten more doctorates every year since 2002.
  24. Ah, that makes more sense. Anyways, the best of luck to you. I was, up until a year ago, set on pursuing a career in medieval archaeology and I have a wonderful professor who used to be at Oxford. I am sure that you will enjoy yourself wherever you end up.
  25. OK, well.. I guess the "MSt" was confusing me. However, MPhil and MA is not the same thing in the majority of UK universities (MPhil being a research degree and MA being a taught), including Leeds and York. Again, Oxbridge is probably different. Either way, I feel like I have steered this way OT so. Sorry OP, hope any of what I said earlier made sense.
