  1. Hi there, I have a maybe a similar question... Not sure where else on here to pose it. I've been contacting POIs over the last month and generally have been pretty successful - that is they comment on what I've said, suggest other people to contact, and encourage me to apply. Today I received a response from an e-mail I sent out a few weeks ago and had given up on that said: "This sounds interesting [referring to a research idea I pitched]. I could be an advisor or a committee member on such a project. Give me a call if you would like, or maybe you'll be visiting the campus? Best, X" I can't visit the campus because it's crazy expensive, but I can't think of a legitimate reason not to call. I know it would be in my best interest, but the problem is I have a really hard time with phone conversations. For one, I have an extremely weak high pitched and soft voice and generally people have trouble understanding me over the phone. Furthermore, I'm not sure what I should say considering I laid it all out (I felt) in the first e-mail. What are appropriate questions? What exactly does he expect me to talk about? Funding? More on research ideas? Do I need to read all of his recent articles to prepare? How long will we talk? Something about this seems infinitely more stressful for me personally than an e-mail or a face to face conversation. I feel like if he likes me it will be a big feather in my cap, while on the other hand, if I butcher it... Any suggestions?
  2. Rising Star, this is what I'll probably do. I'm not sure about FLAS but I do think the program I'm looking at offers at least some scholarships. Until then I'll look for a Rosetta Stone maybe.
  3. I have a similar situation as Nehs. I'm in my first semester and enrolled in two seminars, 1 regular grad class (?), a 1 cr teaching practicum, enrolled to audit an undergrad foreign language class, and am TAing a discussion section. Total hours are 14, not including the TAship. My adviser said this would be hard work but doable but after reading this I'm feeling very doubtful. I know the language is an audit but I wouldn't want to bother if I couldn't actually learn the language or if hurt my more important major classes (the FL isn't required, I just want it for my research focus). I found an intensive language summer program that I'm now considering but it's so expensive and I'm worried that something else will come up and prevent me from ever getting this language. Feeling frustrated and anxious.
  4. I'm hoping to move to Lexington August 1st and am wondering the same thing. I want to be close to campus but don't want to be in the "student ghetto/party central." Any recommendations at all?
  5. Thanks everybody for responding and easing my stress! Just wanted to update that I have accepted at school #1 and declined at #2 and it was not difficult at all!
  6. Well the DGS said he would get back to me as soon as he looked into the politics of the situation so I was going to wait until then. In any case it's better than what I actually accepted. I just wanted to know what exactly I was agonizing about while I wait for the prof to get back to me. Thanks for confirming my thoughts!
  7. Second question: I know this isn't the thread for "what does this mean" questions, but does Award Amount: $12,500, followed by "Teaching assistantships include full tuition scholarships for the assistantship period and include the Graduate School student health package" actually mean i'll be getting 12k in addition to having my tuition waved? This possibility is blowing my mind since two days ago I thought i was paying the whole thing in loans... Any help much appreciated!
  8. Hello, I'm also in a similar situation that maybe someone could shed some light on. At my top choice and second choice schools I wasn't offered any funding. I'm absolutely planning to go to grad school and decided I would have to go to my second choice school because it's in state. Last night however, at 7pm on April 15, my top choice e-mailed me offering me a TA position. I desperately want to accept this offer but I've already accepted at choice #2. I told #1 the situation and that I would accept if they would wait for me to ask to be released from my agreement at #2 and the DGS told me he'd have to look into the politics of this and get back to me. My question is whether there's any typical protocol for backing out of an unfunded offer and if this is really a big deal, other than looking bad. And how bad would it even look considering #2 didn't offer me anything at all. I feel like I'm doing something terrible even though I know I shouldn't. Ugghh
  9. Well, I was accepted at Kansas today. No word on funding but it looks like I'll be going there for in state tuition.
  10. I was accepted into the masters program at Kentucky yesterday without funding (said they would let me know if anything changed) and denied by UofA via email today (though I saw it on the website last week). I'm really happy about Kentucky since it was my top choice but disappointed about the funding, even though it's not surprising. Does anyone know whether I'll be more likely to receive funding next year if I accept this year without? I'm only waiting to hear from University of Kansas now, which was my undergraduate school. It looks like a few people have heard back, but I haven't heard a word. Does anyone know what's going on with them?
  11. Hello all, I've just found this forum and thought maybe someone here could help put my mind at rest. I've applied to a few masters programs this year hoping to study urban historical geography and popular media. I've been watching the acceptance forum and it's starting to drive me nuts because the people contributing aren't geography or masters applicants. I'm assuming at this point that schools accept PhD students first, but could anyone tell me what kind of stats schools (UofA, UK, KU, UNC) look for in masters geography students? I have a BA in Geography, 3.6 GPA, and my GRE was V670, Q630 and AW4, and 3 decent LOR. Also, how many applicants are there and how many do they usually accept? I only applied to programs where I thought I was a good fit, but I'm really starting to second guess myself (I might just be comparing myself to too many biomedical engineering PhD applicants at Stanford though ). Thanks!
