1.

Thank you. Both the points you raise are good ones. Perhaps if I can get a TA/RA, the tuition is automatically waived. And yes, now you've got me thinking about the visa. I figured showing 2 years assured funding might be sufficient for that, but if they want to see funds for all five years, then this option is actually totally out of the question. I have emailed current grad students. Lets see what they say. Regardless, the visa situation might make this option completely unviable...
2. Thanks LustforLife. Yes, they said they would cover the full 20K of tuition fees, but only for the first two years. Thereafter, I would have to apply for fellowships and RAs. They explained to me exactly what you've said - that foreign students can never qualify for in-state tuition. However, it seemed to me that were saying that its possible to cover all expenses even in my case through fellowships, awards, RA, etc. Only after our conversation ended, did I begin to wonder if its actually at all feasible to cover this amount? I will have to ask them again. Wish I had asked for clarity straight away though.
3. Thank you Newms and Was1984. So if I work hard and network right, I might land a RA by my third year there. I am actually quite confident that i will be able to manage this. But just RA will not cover tuition+living expenses (about 35K per year), no? Or will it? You are right, I should ask current graduate students. But they take only 3-4 students per year, and most of them are American. I will look again to see if I can spot a current international phD student. I know they have had international students in their alumni though. Might need to schedule another conversation with the professor...
4. Hi - I applied to a state school and they are giving me tuition +18K stipend + insurance, for the first two years. This includes working for about 15-20 hrs a week as a TA (which is ok by me) In the next 3 years, funding is not guaranteed. You have to apply for graduate research assistantships, and fellowships. Also tuition is not covered in the next three years (as I am an international student, this means generating 20K just for tuition from the school or external sources - this is what I am worried about). I will not take a loan for undertaking a PhD, so I have to be confident that I will be able to cover all my expenses through RA or fellowships. Typically, how hard is this? What do you all think? Fair deal or not? Would you accept such a deal?
5. Hey y'all! If wishes were horses... and we all got into a program that was a good fit for us with adequate funding and all... then, what are your plans for spending your time from now until August? I quit my job back in May as I wanted to take a year off...never done anything so wayward but highly recommend it! The flip side, however, is: if I dont get in, I dont have the option to simply carry on with the job. My Plan B is to get into a serious job hunt mode... I figure it'll take me at least a couple of months to land a job by which time my year would be up. But just to indulge in some wishful thinking, this is how I would fill in time between now and August: March - help with/enjoy the wedding of a close friend April - Plan my holidays for May/June and travel May - travel (go diving) June - travel (go trekking) July - Prep for grad school ....if only!!! :)
6.

yup, thats right!
7. Just like they've come up with the April 15th rule, there should also be a rule that ALL universities will declare results within a 3 week band for a particular program area. This would make life so much easier. I was fine until I got an email about an interview and since then admissions anxiety has suddenly pervaded my life. To think that this could continue till March end is cruel. Then again, the pep talk I give myself is: forget it. Expect the worst. And dont care about it. If it happens, it happens. Let go. My internal deadline for deciding about my future is March 15th. Thats when I decide, to go for a particular program or none at all.
8. Hi, thanks for replying! I applied to the Dept of International Health. No word yet... Good luck with the interview!
9. Hey, I applied there (JHSPH) but havent heard anything from them. If you don't mind sharing, when did you hear about the JHSPH interview? I dont want to be in false hope if they are done sending out invites for interviews. Thanks!
10. Ah ok, so it does happen. Thank you for replying! And yes, Newms, I agree. In this day and age, I would imagine that the most expedient thing would be to email. Maybe, like ChosenOne mentioned, after sending it by post they follow it up with a phone call...
11. I've noticed through the Results website that several people get intimation of their acceptance through postal service. Isn't it the case that most such people have already been contacted via phone or email and informed about their acceptance? I would think its weird to suddenly receive a letter in your hand indicate that you have been accepted without any prior notice. Does that ever happen in some schools/programs?
12. Hi there, For an upcoming phone interview, I will be speaking to the Director of PhD Program. None of the professors whose name I had mentioned in the SOP have contacted me and the Director's research interests are very different to mine. Does the fact that they have scheduled a phone interview indicate they have found potential advisors for me? Should I raise this issue on the call, in case they dont? Thanks for your help/insights/guesses here!
