  1. Got the Harvard rejection today. That's it for me. Best of luck to all still waiting.
  2. I guess we should count ourselves lucky (in Classics). 8/80 for Harvard Classics is a lot better percentage than 12/300 for, e.g. Cornell Philosophy.
  3. So has anyone here heard from Harvard yet? On the results board there is 1 acceptance posted, along with 2 rejections. Can anyone claim these? I still haven't heard anything--but for the moment I'm chalking that up to the slowness of USPS.
  4. This sounds like a good retort now, but a generation (or so) from now, "mr. smith" will be so used to this kind of bilge that it WON'T cost the applicant the job. In fact, he may even write like this himself--I've recently received an email from a prominent humanities scholar that was full of text abbreviations, etc. (written from his i-phone).
  5. I didn't apply, but I know that these are out. The visit is this week.
  6. Yeah, I've seen this before. There's not a lot that can be said. For every person who has ever told you to "pursue your dream," you should be required to read one page of this bilge. Bilge it is, but it accurately reflects the job market.
  7. Is the Harvard admittee out there? What about the other Yale admittee?
  8. This is marginally pathetic, but I've been avoiding work by daydreaming today: If you look at the dates of the Harvard acceptances over the last several years, you will notice that they all occur on the last Monday or Tuesday in Feb. I take it that that probably means that the admissions committee met on the previous Friday, forwarded their recommendations to the Grad College, and received approval back on the Monday or Tuesday following. If I'm right about that, then they may have forwarded their list today, and acceptances may come out this coming Monday or Tuesday.
  9. At Penn, the post-bac program is not just "doing undergrad courses for non-degree credit". They have dedicated Post-Bac reading courses taught by real faculty; these course are the equivalent (in terms of reading experience) of 2 advanced level undergrad courses. Additionally, they will let you audit non-language courses for free (through permission of the instructor). If you audit and do some work for the course anyway, you can potentially rack up some rec cred. I would highly recommend Penn if you opt for the post-bac route--I looked at the other programs and I don't think they can compete. However, it does cost about 10,000 for the year. If you can get into a funded MA program that would be better.
  10. Does anyone out there know whether the Classics (i.e. philology) track at Michigan has made definite offers to anyone yet? I know that they have a short list, but that they do not have the money to fly some (or perhaps all) of the folks on the short list out for an interview. What I'm trying to figure out is if the "short list" means "top of the wait list", or "we will soon offer invitations to some of the people on the short list but we don't quite know who yet."
  11. If you receive a second offer, you may be able to use it as leverage to get school A to sweeten the deal. You could, for instance, ask them to guarantee to fund you to one conference each year, or some other such thing.
  12. I've also heard all the good news from Brown is already out. Incidentally, AAMW at Penn is supposedly not out yet.
  13. Tangent: I lived in Ottawa for a year, and I learned to hate the Canadian Post. I haven't complained about the USPS since.
  14. Just noticed that someone posted a Columbia interview on the results page today. I can't give any real information, however, as I didn't apply to Columbia or Princeton. Or Penn for that matter. In fact, the only Classics department I have still outstanding is Harvard, so I won't be of any use til then.
  15. FYI. Just got the Stanford rejection. It looked like a mass email.
  16. I was the one who posted that "official" offers would be out later. I posted that initially under the same circumstances that anonymous described. Now that I've talked to someone, however, I think that it's pretty unlikely that they are still deliberating. Start thinking California thoughts! I've started to prepare myself for seasonal affective disorder. Congratulations, by the way, to all who have had some good news already!
  17. Sorry to be a buzz kill--I know that there are at least a couple of Chicago hopefuls around here--but I talked to someone yesterday about visiting, and I got the distinct impression that all 3 tracks are out. PAMW is the only possible exception, but like I said, "distinct impression." Just checked results, and there is someone reporting "accept" from PAMW. I think that more or less clinches it.
  18. Right. I know someone who was interviewed last year. I believe there were only 5 or so people during the visit, and only a couple received offers.
  19. I applied to Stanford as well, and I have yet to hear from them. I'm inclined to agree to the previous poster that this ought to mean accepts are out too, but one never knows. The wait-list posting is dated Feb. 4th. Does this mean that this is someone overseas where it has already passed midnight?
  20. Depends on the school. I imagine only really rich schools can afford to have a face to face interview before making a decision because of the cost involved. There's always skype, but it seems that Classics departments (having a strong Luddite strain) are disinclined towards this. Apparently Chicago does no interview. Some schools seem to do a combination of interviews and no-interviews. I base this on Duke, because several people are reporting acceptance already, but I know someone personally who has not yet been accepted, but she is being flown out for an interview.
  21. Just received an unofficial offer from Chicago. The officials are supposed to arrive in a couple of weeks. Best of luck to others.
  22. 2 people listed on the results page that they were contacted for interview by Michigan Archaeology. I'm not sure if this has any implications for Philologists.
  23. @alyssa: I got a phone call and an email. It sounded to me like they have already contacted about 15 folks who they are inviting to visit.
