I made a phone call to Columbia University to get an update on my application, and the graduate coordinator told me they are around 60% through with sending out offers. The rest of the offers will be given out this week. They receive around 450 applications each year and 26 students enrolled last year. She couldn't tell me how many offers she made, but I guess it's around double (just made this up). Hope this helps =)

I think it's safe to say if you don't hear back by mid-Feb you can assume rejection.

I received the e-mail, and it was regarding the CCB program.

Is anyone else concerned that they were accepted to a higher ranked school and won't be accepted into one that is lower ranked? This raises some questions, like how reliable are these ranking systems? Some Ivy League schools are ranked lower than non Ivy League schools; can they be more selective? I found this site also from USN: http://www.usnews.com/education/worlds-best-universities-rankings/best-universities-chemistry. For example, UCLA ranks #8 in this study, whereas it ranks #16 in the one across the US. It's quite interesting how ranking affects us all, and please save the response of "Oh well you shouldn't care about ranking, just focus on the research group." While this is somewhat true, we are all looking as ranking as better job prospects for our future. We also look at cities. For me, living in a big city is important (I don't know if I could live in a city like Madison, WI).

Oof. Rejected from Harvard. I sent an e-mail asking about the status of my application and received this response: "The Admissions Committee has finalized their review process of all submitted applications. An informal notification has already been emailed to those that have been admitted. You will receive a letter from the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences informing you of the Admissions Committee’s decision." So I guess if you didn't get an e-mail from them, you're SOL.

I heard back relatively early via phone call. A prof called me on Dec. 19, 2011. Blah, I'm super upset though I haven't heard back from my top schools (Austin and Columbia). Is anyone else obsessively checking his/her e-mail? Gmail - Inbox (1) "OMG!!!! Oh... wait... Express coupons."

Are you the one who posted with the 3.99 GPA, 790QGRE, 860CGRE? I wouldn't be shocked! Those are incredible marks, you deserve it!

"As a Ph.D. student in Chemistry and Biochemistry you will be awarded a support packet that includes a full tuition coverage and a stipend (currently set at $27,000/annually) for the duration of your PhD studies, as long as you meet university and departmental requirements for good academic standing. " I am guessing this means TA.

Thanks! It's not my top school, but it is quite up there. Too bad their travel stipend is quite on the low side: $250. I submitted my application on November 21, 2011. There was no interview (fortunately).

Just received an e-mail invitation to interview for Scripps Florida (organic chemistry). Is there a difference in the caliber of Scripps La Jolla (California) vs. Scripps Jupiter (Florida)? I know that the one in Florida is a new campus that opened up in 2009, but I don't know too much about it. Any thoughts?

Hahahah that generalization definitely holds true for people in my major: chemistry. I'm hoping that having overseas research experience and a science background will put me at an advantage for the Fulbright full grant in Spain. The director of the Fulbright Commission in Spain even said, "I would like to see more applicants in the sciences. We havehad some doing interesting things in Biology and other Medical Sciences. Butanything in the sciences would be most welcome." This wait is killing me. Can I just call the Fulbright commission in Spain and ask them instead of waiting on silly snail mail?!!

Hey, so not many people have talked about this, but what is the general/average stipend Fulbright scholars receive? I am sick of hearing "enough to let you get by" and would like some actual numbers from different countries. I am a finalist for Spain, so if anyone has the numbers for this country, please share! Thank you!

Hey all, I am a finalist for a Full Grant in Spain. My research proposal involves synthetic organic chemistry and cellular molecular biology. Anyone else a finalist for Spain / does anyone know how many finalists there are?
