  1. I'm 33. Applied to 7 schools, got one acceptance, 5 rejections, and one pending but I already accepted to the one acceptance I have an MS, have research experience from way back when in college, and work in corporate for biotech and I am going into biomedical research. School brought me for interview and thought I have the right attitude for PhD, and really I just do not want to be doing what I am doing for the rest of my life and always wanted to just do research. I am happy, my salary will be slashed a 2X once in grad school, but I do not care What I noticed is that the school I got accepted to takes older people and with many different backgrounds and experiences, not just from a bio background. It's good!
  2. I would contact them and maybe make a case about your situation You need to know Of course, some schools are sooo stuck up that they just send you a generic "your application is still under review, we will have decision in mid April" My case: I got an acceptance from lower ranked but still awesome school and program, they invited me to recruitment days, the works so I waited for a couple of weeks to hear back from higher ranked stuck up school, they first said mid-march, now they are saying mid-april I contacted the Department and they just told me to contact grad admissions. i know I am waitlisted, but just tell me so, dont string me along Anyways, I accepted the other offer and if this stuck up school happens to accept me I will DECLINE with joy and happiness because even if I am accepted I am no second class student to be treated like this just because they think they are soo good anyways, this is my story
  3. Starting grad school in the fall, biomedical sciences and I want to get a new computer that will be efficient and good for my needs I've been a PC person and maybe not by choice but that's all I've known I really want to nail this computer business down any suggestions? Comments?
  4. If you were guaranteed a job after graduation would you be applying to grad school? Just wondering, since I read that graduate unemployment is at an all time high and many schools cite in their rejection letters that this year the number of applicant was at a record high for only a few spots.
  5. I speak for myself, but this whole application process is for masochists or like having a baby, and as a mother I know how that is like seriously, after all this is said and done, I will feel like I just delivered a baby, very exhausted physically and mentally, joyful (if accepted), depressed (if not accepted) but in the worst of cases, I will be here, next year, with all this suffering again wondering why I am doing this? at this point I just want to know! yes or no!!!
  6. actually during the interview one of the professors did ask why i didnt ask my current boss to write a letter, she thought it was something fishy but i told her that in corporate one usually does not ask the current boss for recommendation bc it's pretty much like saying 'hey i might be leaving' so from the perspective of the company they might be wasting time and resources on me when they can hire someone else right now and train them but I've been here for 5 years so I know the processes and the people very well so until i have an assurance that I am accepted I cant really say or ask for any letter of recommendation, plus my productivity is a bit down since i started this whole application process the professor understood my situation
  7. just need to get it out of my system and maybe find people here who i can relate to the worst part of this whole waiting out is not being able to tell people at work here in corporate is very different, things like this need to be hush hush for obvious reasons, i still need to keep my job and even if i get accepted i still need to stay here for at least another 6 months i broke my silence and told some guys in one of my project teams, i asked them to be very discreet about this they kept asking where I went last week when I was off for a couple of days on an interview i mean, i cant hide it, every time someone asks i get this huge smile on my face people started to think that i was either getting married or pregnant hahaha anyone is similar situation?
  8. Any thoughts? this is what I sent to each of the interviewers via individual email Dr. Professor Thanks to the University Graduate School for inviting me to attend Recruitment Days and thank you for giving me the opportunity to tell you about my career goals. I enjoyed our conversation and hope that you got a good overview as to my intentions and reasons for returning to academic research. I had a great time meeting the Department students and faculty as well as touring the University facilities. I look forward to hopefully returning to the University as a student. If you have any further questions for me please feel free to contact me. Thank you again! sound ok?
  9. I keep telling myself that 'no news is good news' right? that means i'm still game I know for one of the schools misplaced my transcripts so my application was officially completed until early february they should feel bad and just accept me hahaha
  10. I am at work and honestly can't concentrate, have a couple of projects to complete and just stare at my computer Last night I woke up at 4AM and just went over answers to possible questions I may be asked on the interview next week So I'm tired, unfocused, checking my BB every 30 seconds, projects delayed
  11. I have an interview (recruitment days) at very prestigious school next week and I was wondering how much of my personal life I should bring up during the interview. See, I'm a single (divorced) mom, and I have to say that given my circumstances I have accomplished a lot. I have been out of the lab for years now so my research experience dates back to years ago, but still, my personal life and career in biotech as process engineer speaks to my resilience, resourcefulness and creativity when it comes to tackling problems which are important skills to have in grad school. I also don't want to sound like I want a pity party, but I am also not the typical grad school applicant. So I'm struggling with how much to say and how to say it. Any thoughts?
  12. Most likely remain in my job, and recharge for applying next year (ie get higher GREs, improve my SoP, perhaps getting involved in a research project at my company) Though I would be devastated, it's not the end of the world and I will apply again i'm not giving up on grad school!
  13. I have a full time job so I will remain here until first week in september, hopefully maintain enough interest and motivation and remain low key Depending on the school, I have to work out a plan for moving into school housing, finding a school for my son, renting my house, etc etc etc my activities will be largely working out the logistics of my new life No fun for me, but grad school will be fun!
  14. so far..... applied: 7 (princeton, columbia, rockefeller, cornell weill, nyu, mt sinai, albert einstein) interviews: 1 (cornell weill) rejected: 2 (princeton, albert einstein) accepted 0 remaining: 4
  15. Still waiting on 5 schools one rejection already one interview invitation in two weeks All I can think about is "did I get an email?"
  16. Nope! I'm 33 and hopefully starting in the fall and I feel better and more sure of myself than 10 years ago See, I've worked in industry long enough to know what I want and what I don't want and I definitely feel super ready to tackle graduate work Plus I've been married, divorced, have a child, and let me tell you, i've been there and done that So for me, graduate school is IT!!! I wasn't this sure 10 years ago Good luck!
  17. yes reimbursed so they are paying for hotel, dinners, etc sounds like a very exciting itinerary and I am so happy to attend Just in case, I will try to prepare myself very well thanks
