  1. I posted this in the "Decisions, Decisions" board as well, but perhaps patrons of this board are better suited to help...

I was accepted to Villanova without funding and Seton Hall with a likely teaching assistantship that covers tuition and provides a stipend. I know that Villanova is a much better school, but Seton Hall is a much better fit, and the funding helps. I did my undergrad at a small state university, so Villanova would be a nice leg up. I'm struggling with the thought of declining their offer. How much will the school's reputation matter when I apply for PhD programs? Does anyone have advice or input?

  3. I received an email today from the DGS of one of my prospective MA programs, asking me to come interview for a TAship. I haven't received any word on their decision, so can I assume this means I'm accepted to the program, or could it be a completely different process?

  4. I'm there too. I've only heard from 3/9 PhD programs, and 0/4 MA programs, but I'm starting to look at other options, which is heartbreaking. The reality is that even if I get in somewhere, finding a tenure-track position when I'm done is going to be incredibly difficult. I'd also like more flexibility in location, and I'm already tired of being broke. The thought of not being part of Academia is devastating, but maybe I should take a more practical route...

  5. I've heard nothing either, but according to the FAQ section on their website, notifications "are typically sent out in the last week of February." Should be soon!!

Edit - I just saw a waitlist. Anyone want to claim it? I'm curious if they gave you any further info.

  6. I got the exact same call, and I assumed it was going to everyone -- it just sounded like she was reciting a script. I thought it was a little odd though--why send info like this now, when we haven't gotten in yet? Maybe they aren't that selective. I dunno.

I got the feeling from it that she wasn't necessarily reading a script, but had a list of things to bring up. This is the first time I've heard of a school actually calling an applicant, other than for an interview or acceptance. I spoke with one of my profs about it, and his guess is that they're reaching out to promising applicants. It doesn't make sense to me that they would call EVERY person who applied, no matter how selective they are/aren't. Did you actually speak with her, or was it a voice mail?

  7. I posted this on the Waiting it Out board, but it might be better suited for this one...

Tonight I received a voice mail message from a graduate English department "marketing assistant" about an MA program I applied to a couple weeks ago. She said the call was to see if I had any questions about the application process or grad student life there or anything like that, and she invited me to some open house thing in early March, saying they'd refund my app fee if I came. She also left her "personal" cell phone number so I could call back. I really don't think it means anything regarding a decision, as this is a marketing person and the application deadline isn't until March 1, but would they really call each applicant individually???

  9. Hey guys, I'm one of the admits (just posted a few minutes ago). I heard via email which appears (?) to be a form email, though it's quite long. Invited to orientation weekend at the end of March. Also, I haven't looked at the board but saw a comment from someone here re: 27k/year? The total value of the package is listed as approximately 27k (including the tuition waiver/health insurance), but the stipend itself is a little over 14k. Of course, it's always possible that someone got a giant fellowship, but since the email itself mentions 27k as the value, my guess is that whoever posted listed that number instead of the stipend amount. I wish I had some information for you guys on whether or not they're still notifying, etc. Good luck to you all!!

    Congrats, Bee!

I saw that in the past, acceptances haven't all gone out on the same day. I certainly am not holding my breath, but we still have a chance until we get that big fat REJECTED!!!
