  1. Just wanted to let anybody who's applying to the LTI know. I found out because our weekly colloquium was cancelled because of the admissions meeting. This forum helped me a lot when I was going through admissions last year, so I wanted to give back what I could. Good luck to all those applying!
  2. Congrats on your acceptances! I just wanted to comment that in terms of industry ties, I think Berkeley > MIT, if only because of its location. Silicon Valley is home to many research labs like IBM Almaden (huge if you're interested in DB).
  3. Guys, I just wanted to leave this here for anybody who's thinking about visiting/attending CMU:
  4. I'd say between CMU and Berkeley, Berkeley is by far the better choice for industry because of it's location. Silicon Valley is really ideal if you want to network in the industry because all the big companies have offices there. That being said, I think a lot of your decision should be based on your specialization. For example, CMU has an excellent natural languages department, so even if I wanted to go to industry, I'd be hard pressed to let go of CMU.... (Although it looks like that scenario won't be happening for me. )
  5. Well darn. :\ Looks like both UCB and MIT are no-gos for me.
  6. Mm, I guess the fact that I haven't had a scheduled interview is ominous news for me, then. :\
  7. I'd say get back in touch with your old professors to see if they have any research positions open, especially if you did well in one of their courses, etc. By the way, I can attest to the limited value of a CS GRE. I took it because CMU's LTI program strongly recommended it and got a pretty mediocre score of 800 (81st percentile). I still got accepted, though. So I'm sure a low score doesn't break your application if the other parts are good.
  8. Nice! I applied to the LTI as well, and got my admit on Monday. Are you going to the open house later in Feb? And FYI, if last year's grad cafe survey is any guideline, Berkeley seems to make the bulk of their decisions mid-Feb... so hopefully we're not getting the Silent Treatment Before Rejection.
  9. CMU Languages Technologies Institute is holding their open house Feb 23rd~25th this year. I believe it is separate from the main CS open house... Here's the website: http://www.lti.cs.cmu.edu/OpenHouse/openhouse2011.htm
