  1. If I were you, I'd go to Stanford ( although I was rejected by Stanford :-( ) It is true that Berkeley is fantastic in CS PhD program. However, for people who are doing real CS research, they cares more about what work you have done rather than from which program you graduated. But for people who do not know CS research, they judge you simply on the school name (I bet you have to get along with a lot of such people in your career). I think Berkeley is highly respected in the west coast, but Stanford is respected all over the world. You can achieve success anywhere with a Stanford degree. So if both school have attractive professors, then go to Stanford!
  2. Yale has funding, Columbia has no funding. So why not Yale?
  3. Thanks! Your information is very valuable to me. :-)
  4. Thanks, Azazel. Seems that you also visited Stanford and MIT. How do you evaluate Berkeley comparing to the other two schools? What about the budget cut impact to Berkeley? Btw, Have you decided which place to go?
  5. I will not visit but will really appreciate anyone who share his/her visiting experience.
  6. Monthly: $800 for house rent (share with others), $400 for food, $100 for phone and other fees, no car. Not enough? If I understand right, $17.5k is only for nine months.
  7. What can I do if they do not have funding to support my research after several years?
  8. I am a little worried about the financial situation of the university. I am wondering in what aspect will the budget crises influence my research&life in Berkeley?
  9. I am also a little worried about the financial issues. I am wondering in what aspect will the budget crises influence my research&life in Berkeley? in stipend or tuition waiver?
  10. Hi, Any EECSer here? I will join Berkeley in Fall 2011. Cheers
  11. Could you please share your experience at CMU? I am an international applicant who is not able to visit.
  12. So you got admit to all these schools? Amazing! I guess that you have already done a little bit study on the programs before applying to them. Anyway, Berkeley is good, so is Columbia since they recently have Machael Collins.
  13. Princeton's machine learning group has Robert Schapire and David Blei. Schapire: the inventor of boosting algorithm Blei: the inventor of LDA (he is the student of BOTH Michael Jordan and John Lafferty!) However, one must say that Princeton's AI research group is small and relatively isolated.
  14. No, at least they have a wait list.
