  1. If I were you, I'd go to Stanford ( although I was rejected by Stanford :-( ) It is true that Berkeley is fantastic in CS PhD program. However, for people who are doing real CS research, they cares more about what work you have done rather than from which program you graduated. But for people who do not know CS research, they judge you simply on the school name (I bet you have to get along with a lot of such people in your career). I think Berkeley is highly respected in the west coast, but Stanford is respected all over the world. You can achieve success anywhere with a Stanford degree. So if both school have attractive professors, then go to Stanford!
  2. Yale has funding, Columbia has no funding. So why not Yale?
  3. Thanks! Your information is very valuable to me. :-)
  4. Thanks, Azazel. Seems that you also visited Stanford and MIT. How do you evaluate Berkeley comparing to the other two schools? What about the budget cut impact to Berkeley? Btw, Have you decided which place to go?
  5. I will not visit but will really appreciate anyone who share his/her visiting experience.
  6. Monthly: $800 for house rent (share with others), $400 for food, $100 for phone and other fees, no car. Not enough? If I understand right, $17.5k is only for nine months.
  7. What can I do if they do not have funding to support my research after several years?
  8. I am a little worried about the financial situation of the university. I am wondering in what aspect will the budget crises influence my research&life in Berkeley?
  9. I am also a little worried about the financial issues. I am wondering in what aspect will the budget crises influence my research&life in Berkeley? in stipend or tuition waiver?
  10. Hi, Any EECSer here? I will join Berkeley in Fall 2011. Cheers
  11. Could you please share your experience at CMU? I am an international applicant who is not able to visit.
  12. So you got admit to all these schools? Amazing! I guess that you have already done a little bit study on the programs before applying to them. Anyway, Berkeley is good, so is Columbia since they recently have Machael Collins.
  13. Princeton's machine learning group has Robert Schapire and David Blei. Schapire: the inventor of boosting algorithm Blei: the inventor of LDA (he is the student of BOTH Michael Jordan and John Lafferty!) However, one must say that Princeton's AI research group is small and relatively isolated.
  14. No, at least they have a wait list.
  15. Yeah I agree that Berkeley CS is great on training prospective professors, but seems that MIT is a little better? http://pages.cs.wisc...mni_matrix.html Especially when considering that the MIT's CS division is smaller than Berkeley's.
  16. Also big congrats to your Berkeley, Stanford and MIT admissions! Which school would your like to join? I will not be able to attend the visit day just because applying a visa to US is so inconvenient...
  17. Thank you! I was choosing among Berkeley, CMU and Princeton and I decided to accept Berkeley. I am happy that I didn't make the wrong choice!
  18. Thanks. :-) I DO know that Berkeley's CS program is among the best, that's why I apply to it!! What I concern about is its overall reputation. Anyway, I do not expect my future employer will look carefully at the graduate school program ranking, or understand what I really did during the PhD program. If they prefer big names, will other more prestigious school, like Princeton, be a better choice?
  19. Thanks for reply. I did have looked at the program ranking and know that Cal's CS program is among the best. But I do not expect if my future employer will also know this, or understand what I really did during the PhD program. By the way, if I choose to go to a more prestigious university, like Princeton, will it enhance my chance to get a better job?
  20. Hi, I am an international student, will attend UC Berkeley's Computer Science program for my PhD study. I wonder what about the reputation of Berkeley in the United States when comparing to Ivy Leagues or MIT/Stanford? I know that Berkeley has a strong Grad school, but it indeed ranks low in the USNews National University Ranking. Does Berkeley grads find job easily in U.S.? Thanks a lot!

  22. Thanks for the comment. P.S. I also have an offer from Computer Science Department of Carnegie Mellon University. Is CMU a better choice if I am leaning towards industry?
  23. HI, All, I am an international application. Now I got acceptance by Berkeley's and Princeton's Computer Science PhD Program (AI field). I am not sure which program is better. Berkeley's CS program is more prestigious in the overall situation, but Princeton has a ideal professor who matches my research interest very well. Also, Berkeley's EECS is large and diverse, while Princeton's CS is small and focused. My career goal is to be a faculty in universities after graduate, or work in the research lab in international companies (like Google or Microsoft). Anyone give me some advise? Thanks in advance.
