  1. I had about 25k from undergrad, and had to take out 20K this year for my PHD. I unfortunately didn't get an assistanship this year, but the program i got into was the dream program for me. So i shall suck it up and deal to hopefully make it all work.
  2. I'm moving out on the 30th, since my department orientation isn't till the 1st. I will also be looking for a job off campus. Is anyone else living in eagle heights?
  3. I wanted to ask this. I am off to hopefully find an apt. at the beginning of next week. Some of the applications i have looked at say they require 2 years of previous landlord references. I have never had an apt, since i have always lived on campus. Help?

    Bikes

Okay ill figure it out. My only hesitation with my old bike is it currently is not wokring for its full range of motion. I think it only uses 9 of the 18 gears. But thank you for the advice. I am used to being in an area where bikes would have never worked for commuting....half an hour to the nearest area by car.

    Bikes

Since we're talking about bikes for the vertically challenged....I was planning on heading to a bike shop this summer looking to be fitted but i am 4'11" so im expecting to need a nice tiny bike. I also will be moving out to UW-Madison this fall, and was having an argument with a family member recently about what bike to take. I currently have an old walmart mountain bike. I was thinkign i need more of a road bike in madison.
  6. I currently go to RPI, in a different department though. It really is a good school, and i agree if your end goal is PHD, and you have a funded PHD offer. That being said, i am also a huge proponent of going where it feels right. RPI does a good job of being really research orientated. I know that it is not as well known as some, but if someone has heard of it, it is generally for good things.
  7. I plan to move early august, mid july if i get the reslife position i applied for.
  8. What section will you be in. I will be in the fusion/plasma physics part. [edit] and now that i read your program we will probably be in the same department. Hope its all good times.
  9. Hey I'll be attending UW-Madison for Engineering Physics this fall. I am also coming from New York (western NY). Visited over the summer, loved it. Ready to be headed out there.
  10. I love turkey club sandwiches and bacon egg and cheese bagels
  11. Well i guess at this point im leaning towards going to the school without funding. The school with funding doesn't have the sterilization, or anything, in my area of interest...so it would more be a degree for the sake of the degree rather than what i actually care about. I know that accepting without funding isn't a great plan, but neither is going for what i dont want to do.
  12. They have not told me one way or another. I have been told by one professor, not my POI who i haven't been able to reach in months, that i might be a good candidate for second wave RA positions. However i haven't heard for a little while now. I have been in contact with other professors and staff at least once a week right now, because im freaking out. I know that going PHD without finding isn't a good option, but if i stay where i am now, i will never get to where i want to go. I have a very specific field of research that i want to pursue, which my current school doesn't offer. So its just confusing.
  13. Okay so i know there are a lot of these, but here is my situation: I applied to 4 schools, got accepted to 2, my top choice and my safety school. My safety school offered me funding as a TA for the first year, and i know the professors well and could get funding as an RA soon after. However it doesn't have anyone who does research in what i want to study, i really only applied because it was where i am currently going to school as an undergrad. My top choice is ranked 2nd in my field, and has one of the most fantastic programs and research set ups for what i want to study. However they have yet to offer funding. Since its now getting closer to april 15th, im starting to freak out. At my top choice, ive started looking into residence life positions to see if i can find a way to off set the costs. Is it the right thing to do to turn down my safety school with funding because i know i will be unhappy if i stay where i am now, and go to the school of my dreams and possibly have to pay for it?
  14. I am applyign to UW-Madison, Berkeley, MIT, and RPI for specifically fusion research
  15. hey, i was browsing other nuclear engineer's profiles and stumbled upon yours. are you from troy, NY i.e. RPI? if so, how is the nuke program there?
