  1. maeisenb, on 16 February 2012 - 03:08 PM, said: Well the question with all of this has always been: what sample size do forum members comprise in the overall application and acceptance pool? My hunch (but maybe Aedes can look at the numbers here) has been something around 10-15% of total acceptances at each school. This is from seeing around 2-5 acceptances at schools that take in 30 to yield low 20s. Overall numbers are harder to gauge, since we don't know the total applicant pool though. Well even still guaging off of estimated numbers from years past, you should at least have seen one person waitlisted from columbia as we had 2 acceptances and 2 rejects here alone. I do have to say mathematics was never my forte so if my logic flawed then you know why Perhaps I'm biased because I think the people who are on this board are really talented and top applicants, but I sorta think that we would have seen more acceptances/at least some wait lists as well because we have really good people on this board... Also, I so think we need to form our own committee at AHA and other major conferences...
  2. His adviser is fantastic and incredibly supportive, as are the other professors. The program is one of the richer ones, and its resources are great (more than just library, etc). The cohort is kind and supportive, and the students you'll teach are smart and engaged. Sounds pretty good to me! Happy to go into more specifics if you'd like...PM me if you'd like. Also, New Haven might not be the prettiest place to live, BUT it is very affordable on the budget you get. That's a nice perk.
  3. Why hello there Yale. Thanks for stopping by. What's this? You want to reject me for the second time? O, ok. At least it's not Valentine's Day this year. I'll try not to hold it against you ;-). Can I get a refund? Congrats to all of the Yale students who were accepted! One of my close friends is a PhD student there, and he is just loving it. It really is a wonderful place to get your PhD .
  4. Couldn't have said it better myself. Thanks, Toulouse1! I'm also having a positive day today--first one in a while for some reason. Hooray for today
  5. Stupid question--how do you figure out if you've been Googled?
  6. Hi lucyvanpelt! Welcome :-). I love that our group keeps growing, or at least we get more people coming forward. UPenn is not done--they sent out a few, and are still deciding on some others. All hope is not lost...yet.
  7. Agreed!! Esp if the rejections come on Valentine's Day!!! Mmm chocolate. Damn it, now I want some. Bad.
  8. Eek re UNC. I was so hoping for a nice, calm Monday. Also, it really looks like Yale will send rejections on Valentine's Day. Again. Seriously--does the graduate secretary or graduate school NOT look at calendars? I thought last year was a fluke, but now it's just kinda funny if it happens again.
  9. I'm sorry you guys that you've just gotten rejections. I was there last year and it hurt beyond belief. With that said, there's still time this round. If the worst happens, and I hope it doesn't, the year will go faster than expected because you know exactly what you want. Reapplying sucks (the amount of time to call profs, write statements, etc) BUT think of it this way: you have so much ready. I already had a great writing sample, my GRE scores, and my letters of rec all done (my letter writers updated their letters, which was awesome). Yes, a new personal statement needs to be written and new profs/old profs need to be contacted, but it's so much calmer the second time around because you know the game. For what it's worth, my application credentials barely changed the second year I applied. What changed is that I got a job in the "real world" outside of academia, and had extra time to think about what grad school really means to me and what I really want to study. As a result, my application was more mature this year without having any extra bells and whistles. Again, this can still all be a very moot point. It only takes one.
  10. Do not give up AFB. Seriously, it ain't over 'till it's over. And if it means reapplying, it's well worth it, as several of us going for our second round can vouch. Does anyone want to claim the American history UPenn admit? If yes, please PM me with time period/potential advisers
  11. Guys...I think we lost someone finally. Oseirus has made the jump to a place we shouldn't ever go. Just kidding, Oseirus. I always smile from your posts, so thanks for that
  12. EV being Escondido Village, where grad students live. Thanks for the input, Schlesinger1 . Since it's such a biking school, living on-campus is pretty cool.
  13. Haha, yes Oakland is. Yes, Stanford is in a REALLY expensive part of the country. They offer grad student housing. There are also plenty of suburbs nearby or on the East Bay that are affordable (well, relatively affordable. Nothing in the Bay Area is affordable).
  14. CONGRATS TO THE STANFORD ADMIT! Stanford may or may not be my alma mater. I may or not be so madly in love with the school that I will talk to anyone admitted and convince them to go there over all other offers. Seriously, best place in the entire world. I know almost all of the Americanists well, so feel free to ask questions. PMs welcome . Rejecting a Stanford offer is NOT welcome .
  15. Hooray for the new Princetonites (sp?)! Also holy crap Safferz. You ARE the new Paura. Hang in tight, everyone. Especially those with Cornell--looks like a long month ahead.
  16. CONGRATS TO ALL. Esp to Safferz--WAY TO CLEAN UP THE TOP PROGRAMS!
  17. CONGRATS TO ALL OF OUR YALE ACCEPTEES! You guys rock . I hope the rest of us who haven't heard good news hear something from the schools already sending stuff out...
  18. Congrats, Chicago admits! Would you be willing to share your subfields? Do you guys think Chicago is done? Sure seems like it...
  19. Anyone want to claim all of the awesome Chicago admits? I'd love to know if it was one massive email so I could go on with my life instead of refreshing my email lol.
  20. Uh oh--the penn acceptance was from yesterday, so I think I can give up hope on that one. Also another Chicago acceptance--anyone want to come forward and be applauded?
  21. Sorry, AFB about Illinois. Chin up--still hope.
  22. Sorry to the Illinois rejectees. That sucks. I've woken up to rejections the past two mornings, so I can relate. Hold on! Good news can travel slowly!
  23. Double congrats to Attia!!! At this point, I think Attic Greek should turn into lots and lots of squealing and drinking. Thanks for being our double-agent with the dept--would love to hear more!
  24. I'm so sorry TeachGrad! That is awful! Did the POI email you? Please tell me it wasn't a secretary!
