  1. WOOOO OSEIRUS!! So excited for you! Have you heard about funding and all? How exciting!
  2. I completely agree with Safferz's guess that there are no safety schools when applying to PhD programs. Some schools might look easier to get into on paper, but their admissions process is just as rigorous, and they might not admit you because they'll see where else you apply and think, o, she's a far better fit for Univ X, and will prob go there (personal experience, got wait listed for similar reasons). For anyone considering UPenn and Stanford, feel free to IM me
  3. Couldn't be happier for you TMP. So well deserved, and I'm thrilled you found your happy home! I really hope we keep in touch after this (and this goes for all of you crazy kids with whom I've taken this long journey).
  4. Well said, Schlesinger, well said. I second this point--never assume that the PhD is where you'll end up automatically after the masters--might decide it's not the right track...
  5. WOO Monster! So happy for you! Great choice
  6. Hi all, Thanks for the many congrats. Congrats to Kelkel--I saw you accepted Binghampton . woohoo! As for Owls, that is a tough predicament (but an awesome one!). Both schools are phenomenal, and a lot of people have mentioned the ups and downs. I would say that you need to be HAPPY (I know, who is actually happy in grad school ?), and if you're happy, you'll produce better work. So I wouldn't underestimate the importance of location. Ultimately, Yale is the "top" program by many standards, but I really don't see someone losing out a TT position to a Yale graduate if you still went to a top-15 program and your letters are super strong/you have a great dissertation. In the end, your dissertation is the big deciding point here. When in doubt, go with gut. Seriously, it works. In other news, my alma mater is in the finals of the NIT tournament. I can't decide what I think of this--do I get excited that they're in a tournament, even if it's the "no one's interested" tournament, or do I protest in disgust that they might be proud of being 69th best in the country? O well, at least the women's team is awesome.
  7. Well, I am officially done. I emailed the wonderful people at Hopkins and told them I was going to UPenn (I have to admit I was dreading this moment, but they have all been supportive and kind). Took myself off the wait list at Chicago as well. Good luck to everyone still waiting for decisions! I hope everyone gets to go where they want to!
  8. Finally heard back from UNC, which makes me officially done (not that I wasn't done before since I assumed UNC was a no). Anyway, with any luck, I'll be making my decision before the weekend. Anyone else a tad scared all of a sudden by how many years this will take?
  9. So I'm a California girl...take this with a grain of salt since Californians take casual to a whole new level. I think dark jeans, flats, and a nice blouse are great! I've also done a cute dress with informal tights. I really think as long as you look presentable, ie not t shirt with stains and ripped shorts/ flip flops, it'll be ok! I'd go for comfy over stuffy. A suit is probably overkill since the profs probably wont be doing suits.
  10. SOOOOO happy for you Monster! Are you going to take NYU automatically, or would you still prefer Rutgers?
  11. I am not an FSU grad or a Florida grad, but I too must say that Tim Tebow is crap. Then again, when you're blessed enough to have someone as amazing/intelligent/down to earth/kind as Andrew Luck for three years, no one else will ever measure up . Gotta admit, as excited as I am for grad school, I will miss going to a school that actually has football...
  12. Thanks for this. I wasn't really waiting on them (other than they're my last school), but good to know what's going on anyway. Wow, only 6 offers? That's ridiculously small.
  13. 80's is totally where it's at. Who rocked a sideways pony tail, mismatched and brightly colored socks, and horrendous color choices? I did. All before the age of 5. And for whoever mentioned the Boy Bands, sigh. That was my life too. I can't believe my parents get the Beatles, the Stones, etc. And i get *NSYNC. FML.
