I'm currently in the process of negotiating for summer funding at my #1 choice -- my #2 choice offer is better in a few ways, most notably summer funding, so I'm negotiating with my first choice for summer funding...we shall see

Hey all, Just wondering if our economic woes -- resulting in programs scaling back on cohort size -- will mean the job outlook for those entering programs now will be that much better in 4-6 years? Presumably, there will be a smaller applicant pool at that point? Or, will current hiring freezes more than make up the difference and we'll all be screwed? :cry:

In addition facing the same financial concerns as everyone, ND also had to contend with an above-target yield in their 2008 cohort of 14 -- so, I think they are taking a very conservative approach and building off the waitlist when necessary instead of forcasting their yield for a target of 12. (and thus admitting more)

All I can tell you is the email I received last night was definitely a form email -- it wasn't sent personally, in other words...

Insomnia? Hell, I wake up, and I mean completely up, at 3:30 every damn night... it's like my body gets just enough sleep (3 or 4 hours) and then my brain takes over and says "got work to do!" ugh In fact, I wish I was writing my dissertation now because I certainly have enough time to do so!!!!!

As something of an outsider, what I find most interesting about the conservatism exhibited by some schools pulling way back on cohort size is that almost all of them were extraordinary beneficiaries of exponential growth in endowments over the last 5-7 years, with most, if not all, having endowments still at least 2-3 times larger over the same time period.... I envision retired old ladies in palm beach sweating over their most recent statements from Dean Witter, wringing their hands.... (this post is not meant in any way to begin a discussion of endowment use, percentage of growth, etc. -- we all have our business models, I understand)

sorry--maybe they're not perfect...but sheesh, compared to their "colleagues"...

Hey Lefty -- was your work related to politics in some way?

For all those who were accepted to Yale -- not only are there obvious reasons to attend, but since this is my first foray into "the cycle" (I know some of you have been here before), it is more than just a little impressive how quickly and efficiently the Yale adcom runs through the process. And can there be any doubt that the applicant pool may be one of the more difficult to weed through?
