Thanks! I don't actually know what the coursework is like there, nor whether it's at all similar to that of OSU. I'd email the department and ask them for some details, and for advice on whether you should do some background reading over the summer.

Unaccusatives-becoming-transitives for the win!

(In other words, I'll probably be back here next year. Maybe I should apply to become a mod.)

Congratulations to all! By process-of-elimination after a really disappointing set of outcomes, I'm off to my safety-school, the University of Waterloo, to get an MA in cognitive psychology. Over the course of that I'll think about where I want to get my Ph.D., and in which of the two fields.

Congrats on the decision!

Hasbrouck is supposedly nicer than Maplewood, and in a quieter neighbourhood, but it's a long (30-minute-ish) walk from there even to the north end of the campus. If you're going to be in IRL, the walk is even longer; Hasbrouck is essentially behind all of the freshman housing, which is a little out-of-the-way to begin with. There are bus connections to it (the 82 and 84 routes go through there), and it's close to one of the better cafeterias if you're interested in campus meal-plans. It's also very close to the Cornell Plantations, the lovely area of woods and trails and Fall Creek to the northeast of the campus, so if you like nature/hiking, Hasbrouck would be great. Off-campus housing can be hit-and-miss (and by April, a lot of the good apartments have long since been snapped up by undergrads), but it's worth a look. Reread the thread and check out the Off-Campus Housing-Office for a good place to start!

I've never lived in Vancouver on my own, so I don't know much about housing-prices, but the city does tend to run on the expensive side in general. I'd definitely check out the 'Vancouver, BC' thread over in 'City Guide'; there's some good advice over there about housing!

Yay! Congrats!

I don't know anything about UBC's linguistics programs, but I grew up near Vancouver, so if you have any really general questions about the area, let me know!

That's the idea. I applied for the MA program, and my potential advisor said he was prepared to take me on to do an MA at his lab, but they admitted me to the Ph.D. (I think this was just confusion/red-tape on their part.) Maybe I should just get the MA and then take some time off. Yes indeed. If I did the whole MA/Ph.D. at Waterloo, I'd be out by 2013. If I transferred to the University of Toronto, it'd be 2014 or 2015 at the earliest. But although there are things I like about Waterloo, and I'm aware that the whole situation could change easily, I'm still finding myself yearning for the U of T. However, as mentioned, I'm probably getting ahead of myself and shouldn't worry about this until at least October.

I...officially switched X and Y halfway through that last post. Wow. Not sure how that happened. * laughs * Anyway, thank you so much for the good advice! It's not entirely that I can't get excited about Z; it's more that I'm not hugely thrilled about it the way I was about the one I visited first, and having to think about going to Z was a surprise. I'm getting used to the idea, though, and Z has enough things going for it that I'm hoping to come to really look forward to it sooner or later. I really appreciate your input, especially about possibly thinking too far ahead. Thanks again!

You're a linguist? So how many languages do you speak?

Congrats, both of you!

Apologies. I meant that the acceptance rate is going down; it's getting more selective. Undergrad college: Top-tier American school GPA: 3.68 Major: Linguistics (Honours) Minors: Cognitive Science, Music Lab-experience: Not a lot. Two semesters of data-organisation at a language-acquisition lab, and one semester of a cognition lab-course.

Help with decision: PhD (NU linguistics) vs MS (Gatech)

Your own analysis of your preferences is very thorough! I agree that you sound the most enthusiastic about OSU, followed by Georgia Tech. You've got a few very different options here; which of the three fields do you think you would miss the most if you opted for one of the other ones? You can work off-campus with an F-1 visa; you'll just need to make some special arrangements. I'm on an F-1 here in the States and that's what I've been told. I hear Laurel Trainor at McMaster is a great person to work with, but yes, she always has seven or eight graduate students. Also, is climate a big issue for you? Coming from India, you might be the most comfortable in Georgia.
