  1. A 'final' deadline was (apparently?) moved from 15 February to 31 January, which escaped my notice at the beginning of January. This was for my top-choice program. And one of my LOR-writers missed both dates. And I just found out. That letter isn't my most important, fortunately, and I got into a program last year with only two out of three required letters (the same LOR-writer thought she'd submitted my letter, but the program never received one from her). But I'm not happy about this. I don't even want to think about it. She already contacted the department about it, fortunately, so I hope she just gets it all worked out tomorrow or Monday.
  2. This thread is made of win.
  3. Heh! So are we!
  4. Yeah, as johndiligent says, teaching high-school is a possibility. There were three teachers with Ph.D.s at my high-school (which was private and fairly uptight, but at least it was good academically): one in CS, one in English, and one in history.
  5. Eeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! Congrats! That's so awesome!
  6. Thanks so much, ogopogo! This is all really good to know.
  7. I applied to the MA program there. I've never been able to figure out whether they'll accept students into the Ph.D. one with just a BA, but other Canadian schools want you to get an MA in linguistics first, so I decided I'd err on the side of caution.
  8. Ooh, neat! Heh! I did my BA in linguistics at Cornell, actually, so if you have any questions about stalking the ling-professors there (almost all of whom are awesome), let me know! * grins * w00t!
  9. Congrats!
  10. And sorry to hear that you were discouraged out of studying linguistics! You'll always count as an honorary linguist, though. * grins *
  11. I know of a little bit of work coming out of the University of Southern Maine on phonological shifts in...well, southern Maine.
  12. And I have no idea where that emoticon came from.
  13. I've been pleasantly surprised lately. Most people still don't know what linguistics really is, but a) they're curious about it, and once I tell them, they say things such as 'That's so cool!' or 'I'd never thought about all of that before!' or even 'Wow, I think I chose the wrong major!' Heh.
  14. I had a terrible period of (repeatedly misdiagnosed) illness two years ago that nearly derailed my life, so I know how you feel! Keep working towards your goals; look after yourself; and remember that your past and your future are both strong and ready to hold you up if you need a bit of support. Good luck!
  15. * giggles * Oh well. It helps pass the time! I'm allergic to nearly everything. I have a strange fondness for desk lamps. I like making clothes. I identified as asexual for several years before observing that I'd simply been too young to have experienced sexual attraction. It takes me about twelve years to get tired of a good video-game (at the moment, I'm still playing the original The Sims and, uh, Civilization II).
  16. I've only had the chance to take one course on Romance historical linguistics, but I absolutely loved it! Seeing (and having to work out) how familiar Latin words phonologically and semantically changed into familiar French words was one of the coolest things ever.
  17. Agreed! Romance linguistics is only one of my secondary areas of interest, but yeah, the price isn't bad for a textbook, and Weiss is awesome. And thanks for the recommendation (and disclaimers)! I think I'm going to borrow those from the local library when the neighbourhood kids aren't paying attention.
  18. Goodness! That's terrible!
  19. I had a few winters of feeling really listless and discouraged in high-school thanks to seasonal affective disorder. Things that can help are natural-spectrum lighting, exercise, and taking lots of Vitamin D. (I've been on 2,400 IU per day this year and have barely felt the SAD at all!)
  20. Okay, how did I not know it was out? Want! * laughs * I've heard good things about that series! How've you found it? I read a mix of things. Lately it's been fiction, biographies, fantasy, YA novels, and, yeah, linguistics/psychology. At the moment, among other things, I've got shiny new copies of Jean Aitchison's Language Change (third edition) and Andrew Robinson's The Story of Writing waiting to be read.
  21. Heh, you're not the only one! I need to work on this too, or my learner's permit is going to expire again. Ahem. Yes.
