  1. I called the program assistant, Kathy, and asked if a specific decision had been made on my application. She said that there are 3 groups that have been made. 1) People UF is "recruiting" (basically admits), 2) Weight listed, & 3) Rejections. She is making the letters now and hopes to have them mailed out by the end of this week. The ISIS network should be updated next week. She said she didn't know the decision on mine.

  2. If it makes you feel any better, I just received a rejection letter too. Though I realize academics are a notoriously awkward bunch, this notification struck me as undiplomatic (mainly the "I concur" segment. . . I mean, clearly you do concur or you wouldn't be sending me this letter. Sheesh.) COME ON! We study the ENGLISH LANGUAGE! Surely there's a softer way to convey this news--in fact, I know there is since I've received many a notably kind rejection letter in the past. But this one is right up there with a rejection letter I got last year that looked as if someone copied and pasted my online DENY status on to a scrap piece of paper. Not. Classy. I think every applicant deserves a little more for his/her time and effort, and I'm glad to hear (based on previous posts) that I'm not the only one who thinks so.

The part that killed me was when they mentioned the time and effort I spent for the application. I kind of just want to send them a thank you card for graciously accepting my application fee (and I had to overnight it, so $20 more). At least they got my name right, BU addressed me by my last name (a recurring problem for 21 years, it got old quick)—it was icing on the cake. At least I've been accepted to UCF.

  3. There's a rejection posted on the results board. Firstly, condolences and good luck elsewhere. Next, did they include any info about number of applicants, number accepted, how they're notifying, etc.? I haven't heard anything from them. . .

    Here's the email:

Thank you for your application to the University of Washington Graduate School. Your file has been carefully reviewed by the graduate admissions committee in the English Language and Literature (PhD) program.

Unfortunately, the committee has decided not to recommend your admission and I concur with this decision. The number and quality of graduate applicants to the University of Washington are extraordinary and these difficult decisions are reached through careful consideration of all applicants to a given program. In many cases, enrollment restrictions are also a factor, limiting our ability to accept all qualified applicants.

If you have questions regarding the reasons for this decision, they should be directed to the graduate program.

I realize that this outcome is disappointing, but I do thank you for the time and effort you invested into applying to a graduate program at the UW, as I recognize that expenditures of money and time to do so can be considerable. I wish you well in your future educational endeavors.

    Sincerely,

    Gerald J. Baldasty

Vice Provost and Dean of the Graduate School

    University of Washington

Note: this email has been sent from an automated email address. If you would like further information concerning this decision, please contact the graduate program office to which you applied.

  4. Hey, I am wondering if anyone has heard from University of Central Florida regarding their Texts and Technologies PhD program? I emailed them yesterday and garnered no response. Thanks to anyone with information.

I suggest just calling them. We (I go to/work at UCF) just changed email systems this weekend (why on Earth they thought to do this mid semester is beyond me) and have been having trouble with the new system.

  5. I am applying with a BA (and a BS in psych, lol) to the MA/PhD track.

Did you apply for the PhD, or the for the MA-leading-to-PhD? In other words, are you applying with only a BA, or do you have an MA?

If you're applying with an MA from another institution, like I am, they typically take only one student a year with an external MA. Last year, their PhD cohort had 7 people, of which only one had an external MA while the other 6 had just completed their MA at BU.

But if you're asking about how many spots they have for the MA (leading to PhD), I don't have numbers for that. Either way, good luck!

  6. I spoke to the program coordinator last week and they began to review MA applications this week (14/2) and had already been reviewing the PhDs. She said to expect notifications in the beginning to mid March. I made the same error of applying to the PhD program with only a BA. She, the program coordinator, put me with the MA applications because she said that I was unable to apply to the PhD program without an MA. She also said that was an easier route.

Also, I somehow selected FALL 2010 (how is that even possible) and my undergraduate institution was incorrect. I had to get the English Dept. to interoffice mail my transcript to the graduate admissions office to fix the ordeal. Needless to say I had a heart attack over the situation.
