  1. I think you should go with your gut and pick UNC. Your $$ will probably go farther there (especially after the first year, when you can pay resident tuition), and more freedom with your research is a huge plus, IMO. Plus, yeah, it's not Baltimore.
  2. Just like any other job, I definitely would not ask about additional salary until the interview, and even then I would prefer to wait until the prof brings up the subject.
  3. Ugh, I feel your pain. I finally received an email from U Mich Epi saying to log on to Wolverine Access to "View Decision." When I clicked on the link, all it said was a decision had been made and an official letter is being mailed. From looking at results here so far, it seems that those accepted have been receiving emails and phone calls. Also, when I was accepted to U Mich HBHE there was a little video telling me I'd been accepted. Trying to stay optimistic - maybe I'm just waitlisted. :| Besides, I'm already, like, 95% sure I'm going to choose another program. I mainly want to get in so maybe I can use their funding offer (if any) as a negotiating point for Choice #1.
  4. It never occurred to me to address them by anything but their first names. Perhaps I'd do differently if a staff member was listed as Ms.______ on the website, or something.
  5. I took the GRE. I'm not sure that any of the programs to which I applied would accept the GMAT. I am definitely in the older demographic around these parts - 37. I'm a career changer.
  6. I know the waiting is agony (I'm still waiting to hear from 3 out of the 7 programs to which I applied), but try to relax. I just remind myself it's still February. Tons of decisions don't go out until March or even early April.
  7. I grew up in Bloomington-Normal, which is another college town (ISU, IWU) about 40 minutes away from there. U-C is a typical medium-size Midwestern college town. Kinda like a suburb without all the benefits of being close to a city. If you're used to living in a larger city, you'll probably be bored, unless you're looking for a big change of pace. Pretty campus, though. I almost went there for undergrad, and used to visit friends who went there.
  8. Haha, I was thinking the same thing when I considered applying to Hopkins.
  9. I went to UIC for undergrad, and have a similar feelings about living in Chicago. My biggest issue was the weather, and then how spread out everything is. I hated the rude people on the el (subway), too. However, there are aspects of Chicago I love that are just as easily enjoyed as a tourist during the few weeks in which the weather is pleasant  - the food, the architecture, and the art museum. I only fleetingly considered applying to UIC for grad school - I have no desire to move back, even with my family living a couple hours away. I moved to Seattle over 8 years ago and I love it here. Yes, there can be long streaks of dreary from November to May, but I'll take gray and rainy in the 40-50's over sunny and single digit wind chills any day. And I'm convinced we have the best summers in the US! I'm really thrilled to have been accepted to UW so, barring a too-good-to-pass-up funding offer from another program, I don't have to leave. I know if I do go to school out of state, I'm going to want to move back here, so I may as well stay here and network, right? That said, I also think San Diego is great, based on a trip I took there a few years ago. I would have definitely considered moving there if they had a school with a highly ranked program in my field.
  10. Do you mean for the particular school(s) to which you applied, or in general? There are indeed some Epi PhD results posted. I posted one of them myself.
  11. I applied to the PhD in Epidemiology program at UNC. It's the only school/department in which I'm interested that doesn't require a prior Master's. So...I also applied to: UNC: MPH in HBHE U Mich: MPH in Epi and MPH in HBHE UW: MS in Epi and MPH in Social and Behavioral Sciences U Minn: MPH in Epi I've already been accepted to U Minn. Absolutely dying to hear back from the other 6 programs. I've been obsessively checking my email, this site, and the MPH forum at studentdoctor.net a zillion times a day. EDIT: Holy crap! I JUST checked my email not even a minute after I posted this and I got an email saying I've been accepted to the UW MS in Epi program!!!!! This is one of my top 2 programs, so I am thrilled!!!
