  1. Word. I followed alot of bad advice from old professors who think they're in the know but aren't. At least I got that out of the way and next year my SoP will be strong.
  2. I sent my application to Brandeis quite early and noticed a similar "missing" materials remark...the GRE general was received but not the GRE subject. I emailed them and they corrected it. Seriously, I think their admissions office is a bit understaffed and they don't necessarily log everything.
  3. Seriously, who do they think they are? The cable guy? I mean, can I get an approximate date for my rejections, please.
  4. If an A or A- was not taken as given, students might be motivated to seek out tips on studying efficiently, or at least take an honest look at their efforts and try and improve them on their own. (i.e., It's great that you studied 8 hours on Saturday, but next time, don't study with the TV on.)
  5. I really don't know why schools can't pick a firm date for decisions. They pick a firm application deadline precisely so that applications don't keep fluttering in, right, so why not put an endpoint on their deliberations? It doesn't have to be Feb 22, it could be March 10 for all I care. Then at least, I would not be obessessing about it until THAT DAY.
  6. Thanks for the reassurance and inside scoop rinneron.
  7. NYU Student Protest Over; Dozens Suspended Students, Police Clashed Outside Cafeteria Overnight; One Arrested For Disorderly ConductCBS 2's Kathryn Brown NEW YORK (CBS) ? Click to enlarge The third day of protests at NYU over budget transparency has students in Kimmel Student Center speaking on a megaphone to rally their peers, all without power, Internet, and restrooms. CBS After renewed calls for negotiations between NYU officials and student body protestors after a night of intense rioting, those who were still barricaded in the college cafeteria Friday have finally ended their sit-in protest. Though the number of student activists holed up inside the third floor cafeteria had dwindled to less than two dozen since Wednesday night, those still engaged remained defiant until the end. The students, who had been inside for three days, were talking with a megaphone to their peers who had gathered outside in the building's courtyard. The university took away power, internet, and restrooms according to the students, but the protestors showed few signs of leaving anytime soon. University officials said they tried to negotiate but their patience was running thin. Overnight, they sent a letter warning those involved would face probation, but if they agreed to end the protest the University would not press charges. As of noon Friday, only one student had signed the agreement. "Take Back NYU! has been trying to engage the university for two years now," student protestor Anna Mullen said. "This is the first time we have gotten their attention. So if this has been going over the line, it's because we were driven to it." "We have been clear that there are legitimate means of protests which we encourage our students to pursue
  8. Orin, We're all guilty of this to an extent. We apply to 9, 10, 11 or more schools, precisely because we want alot of chances and we know that each department looks for different thing. Then, as soon as one or two anomolous, early rejections come out, we feel like we're going to get ALL rejections. I felt the same way when Brandeis rejected me on FEBRUARY 4th! Sometimes you have to stop second guessing yourself (take a yoga class or something) and remember why you bothered to put in all those apps in the first place...because you CAN'T tell how different departments will evaluate you.
  9. Wow, with so many people applying to 12 or more schools, it's easy to see how the "top" (well known, highly ranked) programs are winding up with 600 applicants. Waitlisted people take heart! Many people seem to be getting multiple acceptances (not me, but many people).
  10. 5-6 rejections 1-2 unfunded MA offers 1 acceptance with funding...please :?:
  11. I went to undergrad in California and it is nice to have great weather every day. I saved alot of money on boots, coats and sweaters, and I never seemed to spend money on anything, because walking around in good weather and going to free outdoor activites was plenty to occupy me. I don't know about San Diego specifically, and there is a big financial crisis in CA at the moment, but generally anyplace in CA is a great place to be a student, because it's just so easy to be poor there. I've visited the campus in Seattle and it is also very pretty. The climate is cloudy, but it's mild. If you like green better than sand and sun, you'll like Seattle. I met a professor from UW on the bus when I was site-seeing and he chatted with me all about the university and we went to lunch -- of course, he was vegetarian! The social atmosphere there, like California is very laid back and casual, which is nice. There are alot of homeless people and people with bad drug habits over by the Pike's Market area of the beach, but the UW area is pretty nice. Almost every area of the city has some lake nearby, so the environment is quite beautiful. I currently live in Boston, and I find NYC a bit overwhelming and disgusting and smelly in the warmer months in some areas. It's a great town though, in a lot of ways. If I went to school there, I would try and live outside of the city and try and get all my classes in on 2 or 3 days to limit the commute. Then, it might be a quite decent arrangement, and probably a bit cheaper too.
  12. Has the economic crisis caused you to apply to more programs than you otherwise would have, because you feel you ABSOLUTELY have to get in somewhere this year? Put another way, would you have applied to as many schools as you did, if it were a relative sure thing that you'd be able to work for a year and re-apply next year?
  13. Almost had a heart attack when I opened my email to find an email from HARVARD!!! (Bookstore, that is). and I didn't even apply to Harvard.
  14. Yes, good for you. This process is hard, don't let it get to you like that. Things did work out for you in the end.
  15. Yes, I feel that way about UVA. Though, I think sometime next week is judgment day.
  16. All that spam from the S. African Banks! Because I'm expecting emails from Deans with unfamiliar names, I even opened one.

  18. Hi folks, I've seen people posting the link to their schools decision page in the "Results" forum and in various threads, so I thought I'd start a thread to get all these links in one place. Edit: I tried to post BCs decision page, and then realized I only had the page to check if the application is complete! So if anyone has it... Also, I'd love a link to Brown and NYU's decision page. Thanks! Here is Columbia's web site https://app.applyyourself.com/?id=COL-GAS Here is UVA's https://www.applyweb.com/cgi-bin/ustat?uvaas
  19. Since when is "the right" fiscally conservative? Bill Clinton is the last fiscal conservative remaining in DC. ...and I don't think that miratrix was arguing that conservatives REALLY lack compassion, just that they are often accused of it, or perceived that way sometimes because they will vote against a spending bill that is high profile and purports to help the poor.
  20. You are quickly becoming my favorite crazy person.
  21. I used to know this guy who mas a math TA. Calculus I TAs have the hardest road, as far as I'm concerned, because they get into the PhD program to do theoretical mathmatics, then wind up having to explain begining calculus to Freshmen who somehow managed not to take any math in high school -- ever. When this guy got a sense that students were conditioned to complain for high grades, he would make sure they got a C-. A limited number of "Ds" or "Fs" could be retaken with a "compelling excuse" at my undergrad uni, but a C- is forever. In the current atmosphere of grade inflation, a C- is as bad as an F.
  22. That's not a hug :x
