  1. I have 2 friends in social cultural who got offers on Thursday of last week.
  2. Oh whaaaaat!! Thanks for the info! I was under the impression that all decisions were made. Crossing my fingers to stay close to home and take advantage of the great departments we have in the area.
  3. That was my thought exactly! I didn't expect NYU Harvard and Columbia to post last week (thought it was happening this week) and the rest of the schools are just killing me not-so-softly.
  4. Just to throw in a different perspective, Said, Bhaba, Fanon, and Anderson are not anthropologists, and did not write books to contribute to the discipline of anthropology. Said and Anderson find their way into anthropology in very important ways however, and to a lesser extent the discipline is in conversation with Bhaba and Fanon, but I wouldn't start with these authors as signposts for anthropology. As someone who has completed an MA in anthro, in the list of ethnographies, I can only recognize those by Tsing, Ho, and Ferguson, not to say the others aren't good, but they don't have the same cachet.
  5. Hi, are you applying for cultural anthro? If so, sorry to be the bearer of bad news but all acceptances and waitlists have been sent out, and if you have not heard from cornell cultural anthro yet, do not expect to get any good news from them at this point.
  6. That's really interesting that you were assigned those books. I've never heard of Ishmael and only read the Yanomami in community college once. This list gets a lot of the heavy-hitting work done in the last 100 years: http://www.architectonictokyo.com/architokyo/100_of_the_Most_Influential_Ethnographies_and_Anthropology_Texts.html
  7. I know a social-cultural admit for Harvard. That's about I could say? UChicago and UofM are done giving admits, but I don't know details other than 3 of UChicagos were internal admits from the university. Also, I'm pretty sure that they let waitlisters know when they let admits know. I dont want to be a debbie downer, but its easier to kill hope now than later...cause you could get pleasantly surprised!
  8. If you haven't heard from Stanford by now, you're most likely out since they'll probably not be taking people who aren't finalists.

    Chicago, IL

@Purpledinosaur and @Dorinda and anyone considering UChicago I had the lovely experience of being at Uchicago the last academic year. It is a tremendously beautiful place academically. It ends there. I lived a block away from campus in student housing. I had my apartment complex broken into twice 2 people shot and killed within a block and a half of me...within a week. (Gang related, no students hurt) My license plate almost ripped off across the street from campus My car keyed...3 times My car broken into (nothing to steal in it...haha bitches) Although the university hires the second largest private police force in the country, I would submit that they are largely inept. The one and only time I used a police car drive-along to escort me, I was literally ditched by the officer after she followed me for all of 2 blocks, had to call HQ, and filed a formal complaint (I am not the type) and the officer was disciplined for potentially compromising student safety. On the notion of random crime, kids are held up at gun point occasionally, stuff goes missing on campus often, break-ins are common, and girls get fondled at night. And sometimes in the day. As a girl, I did have a few close calls. Walking as a group doesn't help, even groups get attacked sometimes with random violence. Last year there was a group of like 5 students who were attacked and a few went to the hospital. The school does everything it can to protect students, and there is a very convenient shuttle system that makes it so that the majority of kids don't have to walk after 4 pm. Those routes are set and come often. There is also a point-to-point shuttle system that operates. It was the subject of a shitload of ire last year and a bunch of people formally complained to the university with stories that they would call the shuttle, and 45 minutes later the shuttle would roll up. Or not show up at all. If you're super interested, google "uchicago safe ride". There is a good grocery store with great produce (hyde park produce), and a lot of relatively shitty restaurants that charge about 20% more than they should. The food on campus is OK. I was only there for a year so I was happy to make the most of it. The crime and stuff is more an inconvenience than a a serious threat to safety because its basically people wanting money, and the intellectual environment is so luxurious and stunning, it made it worth it for me. Visit it, check it out, and see if you think it will be worth it for you.
  10. I didn't get an interview but I can confirm 2 people I know who got them who are social cultural people. Not everyone posts...look at cornell for example, all that was posted for a couple weeks was a lone long-list post, and announcements came in the last few days.
  11. Thank you for your username.
  12. Man these decisions have brought my productivity to a screeching halt today. This is the first time I've heard of a dept giving out bad news before good news. Granted there might have been acceptances who simply haven't posted, but that seems unlikely. I have a friend who I thought was a VERY strong candidate, and he got a rejection too about an hour or so ago. Its ok, you have bigger and better things in store for your than Ann Arbor.
  13. Thanks homie! Congrats on your acceptance ! EDIT: GOT A PHONE CALL WOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
  14. Can the Cornell poster give up some info? Which subdiscipline/if you applied for FLAS? Im really anxious and want to stay in NY, this is torture....
  15. As someone who has a very great love for Berkeley, look at the hiring history. You're better off at Stanford. Unless a 40 minute public transport ride to SF is what it takes to make you feel like: OMG I TOTALLY LIVED UP MY GRADUATE YEARS BY GOING TO SAN FRANCISCO AND SEEING OFF-BROADWAY SHOWS AND GOING TO NON SLUTTY INTERESTING LOUNGES AND SEEING ART AND THE MOMA AND ALSO NOT HAVING ANY FUNDING BUT IM A BOSS AND I LOVE MYSELF, and that makes you happy, then go for it. Michigan is still a top department in our discipline; do you think people go to Ann Arbor to have fun? They to go to train to be anthropologists. If location/distractions matter that much for you that you can't sacrifice that much for the discipline now, what makes you think that you'll take the only job offer you get as an untenured professor at Boise State after a phd in anthro? Yes it fucking sucks ass, but that's the harsh shitty reality of higher education now. Either take it, or continue to use it as a placebo against schools you weren't competitive at. Your choice, academe couldn't care less.
  16. I think that's cheaper than Berkeley. One bedroom apt is upwards of 1600. I got the info from a friend who got the email...The dept is notorious for not responding to inquiry. Nothing is ever official unless you get an email in your inbox that tells you it is, from Stanford or otherwise. But if you haven't heard from Stanford now, there is a 90% chance you should let the flame die.
  17. Boo Stanford for giving news today but not to me. Emails have been sent to people with interviews for next week. Onward and upwards, Palo Alto is too bougie anyway
  18. Cornell waitlists! Anyone accepted?
  19. Friend in the program says Stanford will be announcing next week. Very sad, was hoping for some news today. I'm waiting on Harvard, Columbia, NYU, Irvine...I think.
  20. That happened a couple of weeks ago I believe, at least for social-cultural.
  21. Also that email was not an acceptance. KEEP FAITH.
  22. They have. I promise that your GRE scores not arriving did not negatively impact your application, if that's any consolation.
  23. Hey there Lurky McLurkerson! I'm the person who wrote in the results page. I got a kind email from the graduate program director indicating that I should apply for FLAS. Speaking of which, I'm surprised that there isn't more mention of it on these boards since its great money. Anyways, I'm competent in a regional language but not the national language of where I work, and the adcom suggested that I apply since there is FLAS money for that language even though I didn't write about needing that language anywhere in my statement. I remember the FLAS coordinator telling me that the decisions wouldn't be out till sometime after the 20th (that memory is fuzzy) so I don't think announcements would happen before then. This might not be the news you were looking for, but I wouldn't be super discouraged yet, since not all languages are FLAS, and everyone has different needs for their training.
