  1. Thanks for your response, TakeruK! I am in AGONY over this decision. When advisers joked with me that I'd have to make a choice at the end of this application season, I laughed it off. And until recently, it looked as though I only had one choice. Before that, I was convinced that I'd fluffed this year and started looking for jobs. Just goes to you show you that this process is a long one... I went ahead and emailed #'s 2 and 3 to tell them the whole story. Hopefully they will be patient and merciful. I'm sitting on #1 for now, but their letter indicates that their offer will expire on the 15th. Why, oh WHY is the 15th a Sunday this year! Come on #4!
  2. Need some advice, folks. I have four PhD acceptances as follows: 1) Lower-ranked school with full scholarship, no stipend, in undesirable part of the country. 2) Middle-ranked state school with full scholarship and hefty stipend, also in undesirable part of the country, but less so. Get the impression from director that faculty aren't in the business of mentoring doctoral students. They're old and are on campus only one day of the week. 3) Middle-ranked state school with full scholarship and modest stipend. Being pursued actively by Chair (frequent emails and phone calls). Have no doubt that I could make this work, but it's not my top choice. The location is fine enough, but it would mean living apart from my husband, bad weather, very rural area, loneliness, etc. The faculty are first rate, though. 4) Highest-ranked state school dragging its feet on making a funding offer. Emotionally, academically, and geographically this is the best place for me, but how long can I delay making a decision at one of the other schools!? Anyone ask for extensions? Accept at another school and then withdraw?
  3. For composers, it's actually not that uncommon to have to foot the bill for these things yourselves. All of the major conservatories hold "Audition Weeks" whereby students have to pay out of pocket for lodging, meals, etc., sometimes for more than 2-3 days. Some people did interview at UCLA via Skype, but my impression was that most composers called in (including potential Masters students) simply bit the bullet and flew out for the weekend.
  4. Hey Dharma and snes, I don't know how the other departments managed this, but UCLA definitely did not fly me out to interview with them on 27 Jan. I paid for the trip myself and still haven't heard anything. This is for composition, though, so who knows? Hooray for a Stony Brook rejection first thing Saturday morning!
  5. Any composers apply to Rutgers or Temple? I submitted my apps back in November after meeting with professors at both schools and still haven't heard anything. (The dept. admin. at Temple wrote me 10 days ago saying, "The faculty will begin reviewing files next week and will be in contact regarding any outstanding items.") I'm convinced that the fact I haven't heard is a bad sign.

I just sent the grad. admin. a quick email. I feel like sending one directly to each interviewer would seem pushy. Now, either they'll think I'm considerate or a total d-bag! TGIF!

Here's another question for the forum: what do folks think about sending short thank you notes to committee members after an interview? At the very least, what about emailing a dept. assistant or representative? I feel like it's a nice gesture, but who knows with these people?

Paul Chihara was there and ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL. I really hope I get in... well, somewhere! I just have to trust that I'll find the right place. Good luck on your CUNY interview. Do you mind sharing where else you applied? Just curious.

OK. The interview went well at UCLA. Definitely drew a blank when asked how I felt about Ligeti. Otherwise, got some positive reactions including, "that was a really good answer." Six interviews for 2 spots so here's hoping. The theory and history tests went exceedingly well. Even my normally slow-to-start ears perked up for the random chords they through at me (stacked fourths, minor ninths, etc.) Getting impatient to hear from places. Oh, and the CUNY rejection came during a break between my assessment and interview while I was standing in UCLA's music building! I think they should cash my application fee check before rejecting me, but maybe I'm just bitter. Anyone else on pins and needles?

Thanks, guys! Becca, would you mind sharing the schools you applied to? Where is your interview?

I have an interview and all day "assessment" at UCLA this Friday. Any tips for a jittery composer? People keep assuring me that if I've made it this far, someone sees merit in my work, but I'm convinced that I'll say something stupid or blank on the answer to a simple question in front of the entire department. Help!
  12. thanks, latte! good luck to you, as well. no idea what the musicology situation at ucla is, but i imagine it's not related to the composition situation. keep the faith!
  13. congrats to fall2012musiccomp! i'm doing this the second time around, myself. last time, applied with no idea what i was doing and ended up doing a masters in comp. at mannes (finish in may). have interviews at ucla and the hartt school, a 'long distance' theory test for oregon, auditions at peabody and msm. guess i wiped out at cuny, which is disappointing. nice to meet you all!
  14. did indeed apply there and no word. i'm on pins and needles these days, as it's my no. 1. where else did you apply?
