  1. Morning y'all, Long time lurker here, who finally decided to post something. Letters finally made it down south to Tennessee. Received a 15.3/20 and was awarded 20k/3 years from category B. Thanks to everyone for posting their experiences and congratulations to all who were successful. For those that didn't receive an award, don't give up hope. I was rejected twice (as in didn't even make it to the next round) from SSHRC before being successful this time around.

    Nashville, TN

Hi ZeeMore21, I'm also starting at Vandy in August and struggling with the whole car buying scenario. I'm from a big city in Canada and I'm still working on getting my full license before I move down south. Have you found anything online or from sources about buying a car in Nashville? Where will you be living? I heard parking is fairly expensive at Vanderbilt so you might want to find a place closer to campus. Anyways feel free to PM me if you have any insights, otherwise hopefully someone from Vandy or Nashville will take pity on us, and give us some advice. Looking forward to meeting you in the fall
  3. Hi everyone, I've been accepted to a few schools for direct entry PhD programs for American and Middle Eastern history and am now trying to decide between them. One of my main issues is funding. The schools that are offering funding are all doing so in the form of graduate TAships. Is it possible to succeed in the first years of a doctoral program while working as a TA? From reading posts, it seems like most schools offer packages that include tuition waivers and stipends of 20K with no requirement to teach in the first few years. However, the packages I've been offered have no stipend and all require working as a Graduate TA, where I would make on average 13-15K. Is this doable and is it standard for schools to offer some students lower amounts of funding? Advice appreciated. Thanks.
