  1. Enjoy it? Some Turandot and Pagliacci does wonders for the soul.
  2. It bodes ill for me, but thanks for letting us know. Congrats to your daughter. I did my Masters at Brown a few years ago and absolutely loved it.
  3. A lot of the Boston-area schools have a similar arrangement.
  4. Yup- you need a fairly evolved snarkometer to really get anything out of it.
  5. Is there a way of checking your status online for Georgetown or Brown?
  6. Although 400,000 Darfuris have been slaughtered- if we didn't do anything about the Holocaust because of 'complexities', we'd be rightly ashamed of ourselves. I think that you make a valuable point- informed protest is as necessary as protest itself- but it should be underlined that it isn't an excuse to walk by on the other side.

    Brown

I was at Brown for my Masters. You'll have a whale of a time!

I was not aware of this thread before. Bump! Interested in information on graduate accommodation and how it compares to renting privately.
  9. As America is, statistically, the least socially mobile country in the world, what is it about Americans that you consider so much worse than everyone else, then?
  10. How Europeans laugh when we hear Obama called a 'socialist'! You should meet some of our ones! Socialism, in its traditional form, basically means the collective ownership of the means of production. Obama does not subscribe to this. It is best to distinguish between socialism and social liberalism. For that, wikipedia is your friend. The basic jist is realising that freedom, for an individual, is not just making choices, but having the ability to do so. This depends, rather, on having some money in your pocket to make choices. Roman Abramovich is more 'free' than the immigrant family. So, it is a individually-based philosophy that distrusts the homogenising idea of a collective, but it realises that markets might be better at making wealth than distributing it and that the perils of ill-health, poor education and poverty attack freedom as surely as government can.

If UCLA get to have their own topic... What is the best idea for housing, needing a car, places to hang out near campus etc?
  12. It's tricky, isn't it? I had a hard time too doing the same calculation with Russia/Post-Soviet scholars. Then you have to make a decision regarding one prof who you might want to work with against a stronger comparative department!
  13. I have heard nothing. But then I have not heard from Michigan, Georgetown or UVA so maybe it's a personal thing!
  14. Get the Northwestern degree and the use it to teach in Minnesota!
  15. Wow. Really?
  16. Beirut, The National, Modest Mouse, Matisyahu, The New Pornographers, The Smiths, The Cure, The Clash. That should keep you going!
  17. I just wish they would tell you if you are not getting in as well! Thought that I had a really nice fit there.
  18. You'll be fine on that.
  19. How much have you just been applying to schools you like? And how much have you been emailing professors months in advance and asking about fit/research opportunities etc? So much about acceptance to places is building rapport....
  20. Also, UMass?
  21. What about Brown?
  22. This saddens me...
  23. Which is?? Come on, you can't leave it like that!
  24. Southern Cal.
