  1. So glad someone mentioned Gilmore Girls, definitely my favorite TV show of all time! Shows currently on TV that I try to keep up with: House Glee How I Met Your Mother Community 30 Rock Parks and Recreation Futurama Project Runway (when it's on) The Office I also got addicted to Modern Family last quarter (a friend let me borrow the first season on DVD), but since I'm a season behind I think I'll save my catching up for next summer (or winter, since I'll be dealing with snow for the first time in my life and I'm sure I won't want to venture out much at first, haha). I watch The Daily Show and The Colbert Report most nights, too.
  2. Hello fellow librarians! I'm in a bit of a dilemma... it's a happy dilemma, because I'm sure either program I choose will be great, but it's a dilemma nonetheless. Back in April, I accepted an assistantship from NYU to earn a master's in history with a specialization in archiving. I was planning on doing their dual degree program with Long Island University so that I'd be earning my master's in library science at the same time. A few days ago, I got a call offering me a work study-type thing from UNC Chapel Hill. I'd be doing a dual degree program and earning a master's in library science and a master's in public administration from their School of Government. I know that UNC's program is very well respected in the library/archival field. However, my funding comes with the stipulation that I also earn the degree in public administration, which I have to say I'm not particularly interested in. I know the combination of the two degrees would make me more "marketable" than the library science/history combination, but my real career interest lies in doing some type of historical archiving work. However, I know that Long Island University's program is nowhere near as well known as UNC's, but if I put off getting the library science degree for now, that may be a disservice to me in the future. I also recognize that the chances of getting major funding for a library science program are slim, so maybe I should take advantage of UNC's offer? Any insights would be greatly appreciated!
  3. Can anyone give me some insights into this program's reputation? I've been offered some funding from UNC to do a dual degree program where I'd be earning a MPA and a master's in library and information science. Library science is the degree that I applied for, I've never really considered getting a MPA, but I can definitely see the practicality of the MPA if I want to potentially work for a governmental agency. Anyone know anything about this program?
  4. My funding from my "dream school" comes with the stipulation that I earn a dual degree... I know that doesn't sound like a bad deal (poor thing, getting paid to stay in school longer, haha), but I don't have any particular interest in the second degree program. If there were some way that I could attend my dream school without doing the dual degree program, then it'd really be a no-brainer, but I can't get the funding without completing both degrees. The school that I'm currently set to attend has less prestige in my field, but the program requirements are perfectly aligned with my dream job. The costs would end up being about the same at both programs, so that doesn't help me in my decision making... it's going to be a tough call. Thank you both for your feedback!
  5. ... to accept an assistantship from one school and then decide to attend another? I accepted a very generous assistantship back in April from a program that is perfect for my academic interests, but then I received a call a few days ago offering me an assistantship from what had been my dream school. Although the program that I'd be completing at my "dream school" is not my ideal choice, it is also a very generous offer and would give me the chance to work with some of the most widely recognized names in my field. I haven't made my final decision yet, and one thing that keeps gnawing at me is how awkward it would be to bail on the school that I've already accepted when I'm supposed to be starting classes in a month. Has anyone been in this situation before?
  6. Congrats to everyone who's been accepted! I got my formal acceptance via e-mail yesterday. No word on finaid though, so even though UNC was my first choice, I may have to let it go depending on whether I receive a pretty generous finaid opportunity that I'm in the running for from another school.
  7. Does anyone have any knowledge about and/or experience with Long Island University's MLIS program? I applied to LIU last week (they have rolling admissions until June) and I also applied to NYU's MA program in Archives and Public History as the schools have a dual degree program. I've been accepted to NYU's program and I'm really excited about it, but don't really know much about LIU. If anyone has any experiences they'd be willing to share, I'd greatly appreciate it! Feel free to send me a message as well.
  8. I haven't heard anything yet either... but yeah, assuming that they want us to make our decision by May 1, I'd say we should find out by the end of the week (fingers crossed anyway!)
  9. Go check your email if you applied to the University of Washington! Just randomly checked mine and saw that I was accepted! Wasn't really expecting anything new since it's the weekend, so it was a pleasant surprise
  10. Ahhh, so does that mean if we weren't contacted at the end of January we didn't get in? (Okay, rationally I know that's probably not the case, but the suspense is killing me!)
  11. Congrats bbbender! bottles, still no decision on my UNC application either... but since it's March now I think we should hear pretty soon.
  12. I was accepted to the UCLA MLIS program last week, and finally having an acceptance has taken a load off of my mind! I'm currently finishing up my undergrad studies at UCLA though, so I'd prefer to go somewhere out of state just to have a new experience. Financially that might not be realistic, but that wouldn't be the end of the world- I do love being a Bruin. I also applied to Washington and I'm putting together my application for the NYU and Long Island University dual degree program in Archives/Public History and Library Science. I've also visited the UNC campus and I fell in love with it too, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that it'll work out for us! What about you, where else have you applied?
  13. I applied, but I haven't been checking up on them because I threw my application together at the last minute so I'm not very optimistic about my chances... I also think my GRE scores are a little on the low end for UNC. Is UNC your top choice?
  14. I was accepted to UCLA's MLIS program last week... now I'm waiting on University of Washington and UNC Chapel Hill. I'm also considering applying to Long Island University because they have a dual degree program with NYU, so I could earn a master's in public history at the same time that I earn my MLIS.
