  1. I was called today to set up the interview. I was surprised to receive it since I figured they were done with all that. A few pages back someone (NewEnglandNat maybe?) said they did multiple rounds and I guess that's true.

    Cool. Thanks for the info.

Also, just got the form rejection from Princeton. Oh, well - carry on!

  2. Any info out there on Georgetown and where they are in the process? Someone mentioned on the Results Search board that decisions might be coming out this week.

I had some contact with my POI at Georgetown. He indicated that their decisions would be coming out by the middle of the month. So I'm hoping to hear from them before this week is over.

  3. Thanks for your thoughts. They are helpful.

It strikes me as an unfair situation to put me in. I'm certainly comfortable expressing my interest (because I am interested!). But I, of course, feel that I have more to lose than they do.

  4. I've talked to a couple people about this, but wanted to get some opinions from you all.

I got an e-mail today from the DGS at one of my (probably) middle-ranked schools. He told me I was on a short list of applicants that the committee is considering. Great news, right? But he went on to ask me how seriously I was considering this school and if I'm still interested, which I am. And also this: "If admitted to them, would you choose other programs over ours? Which ones?"

He assures me this has no bearing on my admissions (which seems strange). I am very interested in the program, but it's not my top choice. So I feel a little awkward about it. What do you make of this?

  5. Hmm...I'm curious to know the application status of anyone who has had or is scheduled to have an interview at Penn.

Okay, I had a Penn interview earlier this week. Under the submission status, it says it was submitted 12/3/12. Under the application status, it says it was completed the during the middle of last month (1/16/13).

  6. Has anyone else been checking their status page for Penn? Mine shows that it was "completed" yesterday. I was sure my application was complete before, but I don't remember if it said this on the site when I checked it. Does it just refresh this timestamp daily or something? What could it mean!!??

Not sure, czesc. I hadn't actually noticed that before. I know that mine has been "submitted" since November or whenever I submitted.

  7. I just got a call from a Columbia POI. I have an offer. 'History Day' for students to visit is March 8th.

There should be a lot more exclamation points in there, I'm pretty sure, but to be honest I'm just gobsmacked!!

    AHH. Congrats!

  8. The UPenn South Asia rejection was me. Not through the history department. And aaiiee, I too am quite disappointed. Congratulations on Duke, that's fantastic! I am currently 3/11 rejections with no acceptances so I am beginning to think the PhD ship has sailed for me. Hopefully the next few weeks has some good news in store for both of us!

Thanks for the information. And condolence to you. There's really no predicting how acceptances and rejections will come out. I'm sure there is some good news that awaits you.

  9. Wow! Lots of decisions today--and congratulations to those who have been accepted! I'm getting really frustrated on hearing nothing yet from my programs. Then again, none of my programs except for Madison have admission decisions reported. I just want to hear something, maybe the mail man will bring me good news today. I told him yesterday he better bring me an acceptance letter and he got a kick out of it  :P

I know what you mean. There was quite a bit of activity for me last week, and really nothing so far this week. I thought it was going to come all at the same time, but I guess it comes it fits and spurts.

  10. Finished my interview with Penn. It was just a couple faculty members. I think it went well, though I felt pretty rattled afterwards because I sort of blanked on the question, "Do you have any questions for us?" I asked a few things about the graduate cohort and how committees work.

  11. I had a phone "chat" with JHU that definitely was an interview.

A few things I recommend for interviews: Be able to discuss your research interests concisely, of course. But likely they will not ask "what are your research interests" straight out, as they have read your SOP after all. But in my case, it was elaboration of research interests and points I made in my SOP. So if you mentioned switching topics, or if your thesis was a little different from what you propose to work on next, be ready to discuss what brought you to shift. I really just advise having little 'narratives' thought out beforehand. For instance, what did I start with, what were the influences (generally literature or a course in which this literature was read), and why did you arrive at where you are now in your research interests? I had a 'cheat sheet' where wrote down a list of several personally influential works and their authors so I would not forget them in the heat of the moment (this helped tremendously! I know in times of high stress I tend to forget specifics that I would never would otherwise!). You've probably thought about your intellectual journey when writing your SOP, but just refresh yourself, and think of any points that might need to be elaborated upon (they'll probably ask you about them). Be able to concisely re-state what your future interests or potential for projects are, though I think particularly in the context of a chat it's okay to be open and honest about the fact you are following several leads and are not totally sure. I had the sense that my POI liked the way I was thinking it out and open to new possible areas.

Likely they are going to ask you "Why [school]?" so have a few things thought out in advance (it's okay to reiterate something in your SOP, but maybe flesh it out a bit). Lastly, they're definitely going to ask you if you have any questions. This was another thing I wrote down, and I'm glad I did, as it came last and my mind was going in a million directions by that point. It's really the time to talk about their institution (this is the same for work interviews too), so it's just good to show you're curious about it. Plus super concise questions can totally make up for some unintended rambles earlier on!

And it might be stressful because hey, you really want it, and perhaps you've never done a similar interview before, but I found that after I hung up I was super invigorated. It was great to talk about my research interests and have a professor I respected really take interest, at least enough to hear me out. I had dreaded the interview a little at first, but would welcome any opportunity to do it again. And it made me really look forward to going to graduate school to continue to have such conversations.

    Best of luck!

Wonderful advice. Thanks so much for sharing. And congratulations on the interview!

  12. I forgot to say, Congrats, viggosloof! It's great to know you have a place.

I'm kind of freaking out. I just got an e-mail from Harvard from the minority recruitment office asking for information about my native american tribal affiliation. Aside from the basic clerical stuff, does anyone have any idea what I should gather from this about the status of my application?

  13. I'd be shocked if they ask you dates or facts.  It's more likely to ask you about your project, interests, try and figure out your historical reasoning.

You're probably right. I was mainly kidding. I imagine the interview will be more personal than anything else. One of my professors considers it a "glorified personality test," which is probably closer to the truth.

  14. Very happy it's February. I'm keeping my eyes open for more news today, but next week should be a game-changer. We're going to get through this!

And there's the Skype interview with Penn on Monday... That's basically going to be a Trivial Pursuit game based on US History, right?
