I received an email today saying I was one of 30 finalists.
*fingers crossed*
-
I applied. I haven't heard anything though! I'm curious if anyone else has.
-
Notre Dame has little excuse for their handling of applications this year. Truly abysmal.
-
Is anyone else gathering that the cohort sizes are smaller than in previous years? I've heard that from a couple schools. Georgetown, for instance, admitted 9 PhD students.
-
I'm trying to decide between two schools and the deciding factor will probably be the POI. They have both reached out to me (in fact, I'm talking to one on the phone tomorrow). I'll get the chance to meet them both when I visit campuses next month.
I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions about questions to ask, things to look for - what might make an advisor better than another one? Both POIs are highly connected, editors of fairly well-known journals, and often write in public forum, though one is probably more of a public figure than the other one. I wonder how highly I ought to rate those qualities.
Any thoughts would be great. Thanks!

Ugh. Rejected at Penn, even after the interview. Can't help but wonder what I did wrong.

All of these letters would be much improved with stats. How many taken? How many waitlisted? How many applied? Were there limits on certain fields? It would actually illustrate how difficult it would've been for a top applicant to get in, rather than just having to take a robo-admin's word for it.
I can see why they might hesitate, though. If word gets out about any of that info, it discourages applicants in the next year, when conditions may have changed (it also reduces selectivity and the $$ that come in with application fees).
I get what you're saying here. No doubt that would be some consolation, but at the end of the day, a rejection is a rejection. I'm not sure if anything can soften the blow all that much.

Congrats, Viggosloof!
I'd give the Columbia form letter a good rating—maybe 4 out of 5. Impersonal, sure, but the genre necessitates that. It's nice to hear that they recognize the whole application process is fairly impersonal. Certainly better than Stanford, am I right?

To anyone waiting to hear about Notre Dame, I have a friend who interviewed there today. She said all of the finalists for the history PhD were there. It sounds like if you didn't do an interview, it's highly unlikely you'll be admitted.
That's disappointing. Too bad.

A very formulaic form letter, that one was. The rejection letter is a pretty boring genre, at least as far as graduate programs go.
-
I was accepted by Penn today. I got an email from the grad director with information about funding that also said a formal offer would come in a few weeks.
Congratulations!
-
Penn acceptance just up. Hmmmm...
I won't be checking my e-mail feverishly or anything.

Indeed. Dun dun dunnn.
I've been told we should know by the first week of March, but I'm really hoping it's earlier than that. But I'm not exactly up to speed on what a dean does with applications.
-
A UPenn update: apparently the committee has made their decisions and forwarded them to the dean.
-
Accepted at Georgetown! So excited. With funding and a very generous stipend. I'm looking forward to the campus visit.
-
Newb question: What does a summer research stipend usually entail?
-
Any idea if Chicago, UVA, or Penn are done with the acceptances? Starting to get the sinking feeling... Congrats to all the admits!
Applied: UPenn, William & Mary, UVA, JHU, Brown, Notre Dame, Chicago, Brandeis, NYU, Columbia
Accepted:
Rejected: Brown, JHU
Not sure about the others, but I'm fairly confident that Penn hasn't done any acceptances yet. They did a big round of interviews a couple weeks ago and apparently a few since. I think that's about it.

You guys should really pick up when you get a blocked number call because it might, in fact, be a program offering admission. I got in too!
Katzenmusik, I'd be really interested to hear where you're in too!
Awesome! Congratulations!!
-
Saw your post and checked. Me too! Congrats. A good program. I feel more at ease, too.
-
As I said above, official Harvard decisions will be finalized by the deans next week. Anything before that is unofficial.
I was told that Harvard got fewer applications (~360) than in previous years.
I'm looking for signs of hope anywhere I can get them. Thanks, telkanuru!

Ugh. Finally got the USPS rejection from Johns Hopkins.
-
That's awesome, therealrenegade. I've heard great things about St Andrews. Besides, didn't Prince William go there?
And I'm with you on that, czesc. I need some good news. I'm glad to be accepted to a masters program, but I am really hoping for a PhD program.

It's still early. The interview might have been an isolated one.
