  1. Thanks. I think I'm going to go with the separate workspace.
  2. I've always kinda worked in front of a TV, but now I need more monitor space for when I need to have articles + code + stackoverflow/documentation open. I was planning on setting up in my bedroom, but my dad suggested I set up in a free bedroom that is currently being used to store books and paperwork. It would essentially be a dedicated office, but I'd occasionally have people walking in and out to get books/paperwork. Would this be better than working out of where I sleep?
  3. Do you mind disclosing the martial art? I'm a BJJ purple belt and I'd like to be able to train 3-5 times a week (on average) throughout my graduate career. Hoping I can find a way to fit it in.
  4. I think every iteration of the macbook air has had bluetooth, which is what the apple keyboard and mouse use to connect.
  5. Keyboard connects to your laptop. Apple has a wireless keyboard that you may like. I'd recommend getting a little stand for your macbook so you can have the macbook screen at a usable height.
  6. I'm thinking about getting a white board. I'll be doing a lot of math so it may be useful. also: What do most people carry with them daily, and what do you leave in the office? I'm thinking about essential things I should have nearby at all times in grad school.
  7. Didn't know that. I'm 6'1 and already have a bad habit of slouching. Might go with something else. Getting a good chair seems harder than finding a good desk. Any suggestions?
  8. I think you can mix and match online as well. I may be getting a new desk as well. Likely going with the linmon desk, 1 alex drawer and 2 legs for the other side. Haven't yet decided because its lower on my priority list (I have a functional desk, its just kinda ugly and one of the cabinets is broken).
  9. You can mix and match desktop +legs/cabinets at Ikea. Relatively cheap (I guess?).
  10. I should add - prior to starting in September, the program will be placing me in a lab as a summer student working on a computational problem, and assigning me readings to help get me up to speed.
  11. So I decided 2 weeks ago on the program I was going to accept. I declined an offer to a very good professional program in favour of a PhD in Comp. Biology. For some reason, at the time, and the following 2 weeks, I was delighted with my decision. Right now, I regret it. I feel like I don't have enough experience, and I'm not quite sure if I will be able to succeed. I have the skills in their raw form - I know my biology, statistics and programming - but I don't have any experience putting all of it together (and I made this clear in my application) in a research setting. Is it normal to feel this way?
  12. Hey, I was accepted into the same program recently; I will be receiving my official package in the next few days. I'm wondering if there was a minimum GPA required by the end of the term. Might get a B+ in one of my courses (probably not), but just want to make sure.
  13. I decided early on that I didn't want to leave Canada and U of T is the best in Canada for computational biology. Super excited to get started.
  14. Accepted! University of Toronto Molecular Genetics. Will be accepting.
  15. Thanks. I just called and I was told that I should have a decision by the end of the day.
  16. Yet to receive a response. I have until Monday to send in my deposit for my second choice program. I don't want to call into the department, but I'm starting to run out of time.
  17. I've checked my mail 57 times today (yes, I'm keeping count). I have excluded all the times I looked at my phone for the push notification.
  18. Starting to think ive been rejected from my first choice program. My one reject was 1 week after interview, my one acceptance was 3 days after interview. It has been a week since I interviewed for my first choice and I've heard nothing. One of the two profs said he was very optimistic about my chances, but the second person I met didn't give anything away. I've checked my email 50 times today.
  19. I interviewed with 2 profs (admissions committee) last week on Monday. Wondering how long I should wait before sending an email asking for my status. I have an offer of admission to my second choice program and they require a response early next week (can't get an extension).
  20. Hey I have two short interviews (<30 minutes) on Monday with admission committee members for molecular genetics at U of T (comp. bio stream). I've had interviews with POIs in the past, and I'm ready for those, but I'm not sure how I should approach something like this. Any advice?
  21. Hey, congrats on the acceptance. I considered applying to biochem, but decided against it last minute. It looks like an awesome program!
  22. I decided not to mention it. I figured that if it fell through, I didn't want it to appear as if I was lying on my application.
