  1. Hi everyone, I applied to UCR and UCI for fall 2011 and I have yet to hear back from them. I've tried to contact UC Riverside at the end of last week and today and nobody has answered the department's phone. I called the graduate coordinator and she has not responded either. I've also e-mailed the coordinators. I haven't heard anything from either school and I've checked the Web site - it says Pending Decision. So, my question is, is anyone else in this situation where you have yet to hear from these schools? I'm wondering what is going on because I think it is very unprofessional to keep applicants waiting when April 15th is the deadline to make a decision for which school you want to attend.
  2. I don't even know if I would use the term "Safety School" anymore for graduate school. Every program is looking for someone different and even somewhat lower-tier programs will reject students with excellent qualifications. It's great that you want to go to graduate school, but if you're only a year into undergrad, your opinion might change on where to apply. I think it's way too early to be getting advice on your application profile right now. Your GPA could change dramatically. Right now I would focus on the now and work hard in your courses, gain research experience, and study for the GRE in the coming years.
  3. I was also admitted to the Master's program and not PhD, but I declined the offer. Since there is no funding and it's not for the degree I was seeking. Best wishes to those attending!
  4. Really?! Did you speak with the front desk assistant, because she told me that if you haven't heard back you were rejected!
  5. No news here either. Patiently waiting...
  6. Is anyone planning to decline their offer to UCSD? Just still crossing my fingers for funding. :/
  7. I received a personalized rejection e-mail from the department saying that all decisions were made. It was sent to me yesterday.
  8. No decision yet. :/ The director of the graduate dept. also said they weren't done selecting students just yet. Oh well! I will keep waiting. Glad I got in somewhere though! Thanks a bunch!
  9. I am hoping to study sociology of sexuality, culture, or religion. I haven't been able to narrow it down to just one field. Those are my top three areas of interest. I've spoken with Harvey Goldman (culture and sociological theory) and John Evans (religion) at UCSD. They are both very encouraging and seem to really want to work with me. I'm also looking at contacting Rebecca Klatch (gender and sexuality). I haven't been able to reach her yet so I am hoping to hear from her before the open house. Will you be there? And I'm sorry you didn't get into JHU, but UCSD is an amazing campus and the program is great. I live very close to the school so I've done a lot of research on the university.
  10. Hi everyone - I was just curious whether or not anyone has decided to attend UCSD this fall? I will most likely be there and am interested in seeing whether or not any of you are also planning to attend. If so, what are your research interests and which professors are you hoping to work with?
  11. I have a question that might seem silly, but where does one go to log in to UCLA's Web site to track their application to see whether or not it was denied? When I called the graduate coordinator about two days ago she said that not all decisions were made and that some applicants were accepted, but that they were not finished yet. So, I just want to know where I can go to look and see what's up. I go to the application that I filled out, but there's nothing that explains your status. Any help would be great. Thanks!
  12. I'm almost positive I'll be at UCSD. I was rejected from a couple of schools and wait-listed at UCSF. I have heard really good things about the faculty at UCSD and I've spoken with a professor at the university. He was very reassuring and told me that he has not heard of a situation where a graduate student did not receive some kind of support while in graduate school. I think it's a great school and I already live in San Diego, and am a California resident, so my tuition will be greatly reduced already. Plus I don't have to worry about housing. Best of luck to you!
  13. What government scholarship are you referring to? That's great that you got almost full funding! Are you planning to attend?
  14. I actually called the office of sociology and the receptionist said that all decisions were made and anyone who has not received an e-mail was rejected. The letters will be coming via snail mail.
  15. I called UCSF today and was told that I am on the wait list. The graduate adviser mentioned that those who were rejected were already e-mailed. So, if anyone hasn't heard back you are probably on the wait list as well. She also said the program doesn't offer that many fellowships for students. I doubt I will even go if I do get in!
