  1. That should be cool in Providence. I did my undergrad there, and Prov is a town that runs the gamut from cheap to expensive, especially around campus where you can find decent-to-GREAT housing and food for relatively good prices. Don't know where you'll be coming from, but the BIG investment you'll want to make will probably be for your winter coat! It can get pretty chilly here in jan and feb. I'll actually miss Prov; hope you like it! (And there are GREAT people in the history department--that was my department!) GG
  2. After a long day or checking emails and mailbox over and over, chatting with a prof about the pros/cons of the various programs I applied to, getting sorta pissed that a buddy of mine has heard from ALL his programs as of TODAY (!), your point there made me feel really, really happy. I feel the same exact way, regardless of how this whole thing shakes out. Hooray, indeed! GG
  3. Acceptance: Phone call from Grad Advisor of department, followed by a fun game of phone tag with my actual advisor (3 calls each) in the department--great talk once we got in touch! Rejections: First was a plain email from the Grad Office (followed by a snail mail letter two weeks later--just, I guess, to send the point home, so to speak  ) Second was a link at the website, which I went to after seeing a coupla rejections/acceptances on the results page here at GradCafe. It was a standard run-of-the-mill rejection letter. Didn't hurt so bad since I'd already gotten into one of my top two choices...
  4. I saw that someone got rejected by Harvard History of Am Civ tonight on the results page, so I guess they're finally reporting. I'm in the same HarvardYaleBrown matrix myself (with NYU thrown into the mix, but I hear they reply WAY late). A friend in Nashville said he heard that Brown was reporting in the next day or so. But who really knows? I heard from USC's Am Studies early on--rejected. A buddy of mine applied to Minnesota and Michigan as well as the matrix above but still hasn't heard from those places either. I guess Am Studies (or Civ) is late all over the country this season, with USC the only real major exception? Good luck to everyone! GG
  5. I heard from Berkeley around mid-Feb via phone call from the dept...I wanna know when Yale is letting people know. Any ideas? Has anyone gotten accepted there yet? GG
  6. Hey man...the fact that you even suggested it is weird to me--I don't think I'd lie either way cause it's nobody's business, especially if they're not exactly winning life's lottery either (and who really ever does???)... but that said, people are gonna talk about you/comment on your life/have an opinion about you in WHATEVER you do, so "giving them the satisfaction of not seeing you achieve one of your goals" is beside the point...You'll get in SOMEWHERE, do good work, graduate, and the be great at what you do. Then WHATEVER people say/think/do shouldn't matter... Well, at least that's what I think... GG
  7. Thanks Earlyamerican I'm so new here, I dIdn't know there WAS an archive here...It has dates of news from prior years? Gee, thanks! GG
  8. Hey guys, Anyone heard anything from this program yet? I heard from USC (denied) but not yet from the Am Studies programs I applied to at Brown, Yale, NYU or Harvard. I hear NYU reports later than most, so I'm not even thinking about that response right now, but I heard that Harvard was starting to report. Any news you have would be appreciated. Thanks GG
  9. Thanks d1k...but you confuse me: Was your friend admitted LAST year on the 22nd of Feb? Or did you mean s/he was admitted on the 22nd of Jan? Also, was wondering if anyone might be able to answer this: When one gets the phone message about acceptance, and they don't mention funding other than "you've been nominated for fellowship," does that mean one could be admitted w/o funding? Or just that the funding matters haven't been worked out yet, and might be by the time I receive the official letter in the mail? Do I address this stuff when my advisor calls? (I was told that I should be getting a call from my appointed advisor in a few days.) Thanks! GG
  10. Hey guys. Applied to Berkeley and Northwestern's African American Stuides; got accepted by Berkeley a coupla days ago and rejected by Northwestern today. Also applied to Yale's combined AfAm/American Studies, but haven't heard yet. Didn't apply to AfAm at Harvard; applied to the History of Am Civ program there, as well as Brown's American Civilization. Haven't heard from either one of them yet either. Happily, of the straight AfAm programs, Berkeley was my top choice--though I NEVER expected to get in. So very happy here. Hopefully more good news will come in! Congrats to those of you who have gotten good news and Good luck to everyone! GG
