  1. So, the College of Engineering in my univ. (Boston Univ) have this PhD Math qual exam. I just took it yesterday. There are 9 sections (differential equation, fourier analysis, etc... etc) and we had to choose 4. It is possible for a student to fail just one section and pass the other ones. Well, I didn't do so super in one of the sections and I might fail it... ~sigh~ Do you guys know how strict/lenient are the graders for the qual exam? I mean what's the typical passing rate for similar exams? I just can't bear the shame of failing it... my colleagues and everybody else did well.... arrgghhh help! Just need to get that out of my chest, I guess.... Thanx, the lad
  2. Congratulations! Finally eh? I'm getting a TA appointment as well. I'm kind of nervous, been out of school for almost a year. I think the undergrads will be smarter than me.
  3. I'm going to BU in Fall 2007. Anybody else?
  4. Finally... I got answers from all the schools I applied to... (accepted 4 out of 6, 3 with financial aid). It's freaking over.
  5. I heard from UCSD a couple of days ago with a rejection (I expect this). I still haven't heard from Brown University... isn't that ridiculous?
  6. I'm going to Boston!!! Any tips on apartment hunting? When should I start looking? I will go to BU... should I give up and sell my lovely car? Yahoo!!! soo excited (but afraid of going broke as well).
  7. Boston University. Electrical & Computer Engineering Ph.D. Weeee!!!!
  8. I just rejected by UCSD (EE PhD). Seeing from the Results section, so many people did get their rejections yesterday. What the heck man?!?!?!
  9. Hwahaha... that's funny... At the beginning of the application process, I was full of hope. Right now, it's all sheer hatred... hehe... but still... Give me the envelopes! Now!... Mail me something!!
  10. My acceptance notifications all came through emails, which were followed by envelopes containing 3-4 sheets of paper. My rejection notifications are pretty much big black stones with incriptions that said "You Suck"
  11. So... I just can't wait anymore... I emailed Brown Univ.'s Engineering secretary to know my application status. She replied by saying that I should get an admission letter within a few weeks (what?). I mean first of all, I need to give decisions to other schools by April 15. Second, it's been soo late in the game and I'm still waiting for admission decision? Third... uhm... I'm so sick of waiting. I expect a rejection letter. So much for that.
  12. Me! Me! Check out the Applied Sciences forum!
  13. No problemo...The letter was postmarked March 28, btw... so it is a little late. I don't think they are done with all their admission decisions yet. The letter also said that the deadline for accepting the offer is April 15, as usual I guess...
  14. I didn't get invited to open house visits from several universities that I applied to. Screw them! I don't need no sympathy BBQ. I'm gonna have my own crawfish boil!
  15. I'm sorry to hear that neil... Graduate Admission process is a freaking pain in the neck. There should be a money-back guarantee when applicants are not satisfied with the admission office's service.
  16. You're welcome. I got the admission decision through email and then a formal letter came through snail mail. I suggest you call the department to find out what's going on. Good luck!
  17. I heard from BU around March 3 (accepted, w/ TA). However, I had to call the EE department to get this decision.
  18. Waiting for two of my top schools' admission decision has slowly drained my energy. And my humanity. I have smiled less, stared at the wicked computer more, and became a paranoid. I started to think that I would join one of those groups where people sit in circles and say... "Hi... I have a tremendous hatred toward graduate admission officers." I hope I'm not losing my patience, hope, as well as my sanity.
  19. I heard from BU about 3 weeks ago (March 6, I believe). Yes, I actually did get their invitation to the open house, but I didn't attend (I had work). I'm an international student, but got my B.S. and M.S. in an American university.
  20. It's March 29 already.... looking back, applying to grad schools have been one of the most cumbersome/burdensome/pain-in-the-neck thing to do... I wished I had found this site earlier, but... anyway, I just would like to share the schools that I applied to and the results (all for PhD degree): 1. UCSD (still waiting....) 2. Univ. of Maryland - College Park (accepted, no aid... yargh...) 3. Brown University (still waiting) 4. Boston University (accepted, TA offer) 5. Univ. of Connecticut (accepted, RA offer) 6. Univ. of Central Florida - College of Optics (accepted, fellowship) (My concentration is Photonics by the way). Well, as you can see... I didn't apply to any top 10 schools in EE... I wasn't too confident with my profile. Besides, I applied to four top 10 schools right after I got my B.S. (I have an M.S. in EE now) and got rejections from all of them. So I learned, and I applied to schools that I can confidently get into (well, UCSD is a dream school). I'm becoming anxious to hear from UCSD and Brown. However, because this is already the end of March, I guess I have to assume for the worst. Or, should I?? Still keeping my hope alive, kind of. Anybody heard any positive news from UCSD and Brown late at this stage? Cheers
