Making it official with NYU!

Hey guys! Congrats on your acceptances! I am currently finishing up my MA at Georgetown as a fully funded student. My funding is through the GWA (Graduate Writing Associates) program, and I receive tuition and a stipend for TA courses in the English department. The department has several opportunities for funding that aren't all listed on the website, including some that pop up throughout the year, so I think that 1/3 or students is actually on the low end.

I took the GRE general three times and the GRE subject test twice. My scores varied slightly each time (up and down), but, overall, they were pretty abysmal. However, I've been accepted at two really great programs and wait listed at two others, so it couldn't have mattered too much. When it comes down to it, I'm terrible at standardized/multiple choice tests. I get extremely anxious and over think every option because I try to make an argument for why certain answers could be right. When it comes down to it, ETS exists only to make money, and the company is one of the worst operated EVER. I almost hit the floor when I found out it was a "non-profit." I had this same question, so I asked if it would be okay for my partner to come with me to the welcome reception, and they said yes, absolutely. I would just ask. I feel like these places know that choosing a doctoral program is a HUGE decision that requires you to consider all aspects of your life. If your partner/spouse is a part of that, it makes sense that you would want them to be there and get their input as well.

Sorry, should have clarified. It was two days ago. But you just can never be sure of what admissions is up to. When I got into my MA program, I was accepted unfunded and totally resigned myself to not getting any support, but then more than a month later they called to tell me that I would have funding. You just never know!

I was assuming I was rejected from NYU as well, but I just got accepted, so don't give up on anywhere yet!!!

Hi everyone, Congrats to everybody that has been accepted!! and fingers crossed for those still waiting. This process is unlike anything else. I can claim the NYU acceptance from two days ago, and yes, it happened on that day. Until I got accepted I had sworn off Grad Cafe because of how anxious it made me when I applied to programs the first time, so that's why I didn't claim it immediately (I had forgotten my login info and couldn't reply on the forum... whoops). Also, I am currently doing my MA at Georgetown (best MA program ever!!! btw) and can say that I was notified of my acceptance in late March. I know, a very long time to wait. Hope this helps! and again, CONGRATS TO EVERYONE!!!!!

Yes, debt blows. But if I've learned one thing from Matt Taibbi, it's that money isn't really real anyway... right? Haha. Still, an offer of admission to Georgetown is a great honor, and everyone deserves a drink. I know I'll be having one later. Here's to waiting for funding! Cheers! P.S. Griftopia is a great book by Taibbi about the mortgage crisis and general economic collapse of the U.S. I HIGHLY recommend it.

Directly after I posted this, I got an offer of admission. The email said that those students who will receive funding will be called. Ring, phone, ring!!!!!!

I mean, it's a really difficult call, and after reading that article, I would agree that it really just depends on your financial standing. I was an English and Spanish major during my undergrad at a fairly expensive private school. Here's what I've found: I'm pretty much overqualified / underqualified for every position I've found. I've gotten denied for administrative jobs (one of the few I'm "qualified" for) because my resume indicates that I probably won't be around long. Unfortunately, not too many employers really recognize the value of being literate. I've looked in the editing and publishing arena, but that requires A) more experience (which you can't get unless someone will hire you!) and usually a relocation to a major city (which means more $$$$$$). Sooooooo, I pretty much have to go on for more education in order to get a decently paid position that will allow me to pay off loans and hopefully live pretty comfortably while doing so. I'd like to settle down and start a life before I'm 40, if possible. As of now, given my income and debt, I simply cannot afford to pay full price for a graduate program, so I applied to a lot of Ph.D programs because of funding opportunities. However, it seems that the MA is a better (more feasible) route to the Ph.D, so I'm probably going to have to suck it up and take out more loans... Wah wah wah.

Any new word? I got apartment decisions to make!

Good to hear, but now I still have no real idea of what the MAPH is. I mean, I get it. It's a Masters in Humanities, but what does that entail? My work is in English, so if I get to design my own program, wouldn't it just end up looking like an English masters program? but I just wouldn't technically have an English masters? As far as what I want to study, my interests are pretty specific, so I don't really fall into a category of a potential graduate student who is still making a transition... Someone?

Hey! Sorry for the late response. No, I still haven't heard from Chicago. It has given me time to do some research on the MAPH program though. However, after reading through all of the information on Chicago's website, I still do not have a very good grasp of the program and am concerned about my chances, should I do the MAPH, of getting into a PhD in English (ultimately what I really want to do) later on. Still, this is of course jumping the gun. Haven't been accepted yet!

Anyone know when they are going to start sending out official rejections?

I'm pretty much with cicada123 in the sense that it will come down to those dolla dolla bills. Also, I'm not sure if it would be better to just reapply to PhD programs next year instead of going for the MA, but I'll probably rely on the advice of my undergrad advisors. They been a great help so far.

Okay. So, I still have not heard anything from Chicago. Considering that rejection letters started going out last Saturday (according to what I've seen on this website) and I live in PA, I'm wondering what the deal is. While the US postal service is slow, I just don't see it being that slow. Any ideas on why I still may not have heard back? Should I just assume it was lost in the mail and move on?

I agree that since they do not offer a PhD there is probably more funding for MA than other programs... hopefully? Haha. I also applied for the Graduate Writing Associates Program. Anyone else? Should be hearing back soon!

I emailed the department last week. They said that they expect to be notifiying applicants of decisions around March 14.
