  1. SLU has been polite but firm about the deadline. They've given me an excellent package, and the faculty is amazing for my specialty (Thomas Madden and Walter Treadgold, freakin rockstars of medieval history) so I'm just fine with going there. I'm holding out hope for Illinois because it's my dream school- Ralph Mathisen is there, and they've got an incredible library. But if Wednesday comes and I'm going to St. Louis, that's fine. It's like being told that the Stones couldn't make it, so you'll have to party with Axl Rose- it's not better or worse, just different. (Insert your own musical idols.)
  2. Actually, I have notified LSU and Catholic. SLU is where I'm going if I don't get into Illinois. So everyone on their waitlist is also waiting for Illinois' accepted people to make up their minds. I'm sure it extends even further than that- they're probably waiting on somone at Ohio State, who's waiting on someone at Chicago, who's waiting on someone...it's like a horrible, stress inducing version of six degrees. There's probably a lynchpin somewhere, one future PhD who'll accept at Random State U at 4 pm on Wednesday and cause a waitlist cascade.
  3. people who got into Illinois: please make up your minds! I just had an e-mail from the DGS, and only half of those they've admitted have made a decision- which means people on the waitlist (i.e., me) are still in limbo. It's absolutely killing me not to know what's up. thank you!
  4. uff, finally heard from my last two! got into LSU with funding, got rejected by Ohio State. I didn't realize until now exactly how much stress I've been carrying around. I feel like my whole body has just relaxed completely. good luck to everyone who's still waiting. now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to go get drunk.
  5. I just called LSU, cause it had been three weeks since they said they'd have decisions in two. I think if you haven't heard anything in two or three weeks, you're justified in contacting the department.
  6. is the person who just put in St. Louis on here? cause we should chat.
  7. "Economic history" is a very, very broad term- just calling yourself an economic historian is akin to calling yourself a cultural historian. Are you further specialized? Like, economic history of 19th century US or something like that?
  8. I think the next five or six years are going to be bad for admissions. Get in now, if you can.
  9. I had an e-mail from the DGS on March 6 saying that they hadn't finalized decisions (and that I hadn't been cut yet.) Someone really ought to call again.
  10. yep. two. although I'm anticipating rejections from both.
  11. it's interesting how it's really more about getting closure than about getting admitted. Getting my rejection from Chicago was such a relief. I won't be able to relax properly until the whole process is done- in or not, I just need to know.
  12. congrats to everyone who's gotten acceptances, it seems like the pace is really picking up. I got my rejection from Chicago today- not unexpected, so it doesn't bother me. Just three more to go!
  13. my anxiety overcame my good sense, and I e-mailed the grad director at Ohio State. they haven't finished making decisions yet, and won't be done until next week, so if you haven't heard, don't panic yet.
  14. does anyone know what's up with Chicago? Every day I check the post, expecting my rejection letter, but it hasn't come.
  15. w00t, got into St. Louis with funding.
  16. just turned in a thesis draft, so now I don't even have that to do. I have a feeling my house is about to get EXTREMELY clean, unless I hear soon.
  17. you need to ask the bursar (or whatever they call the office where you pay your bill) what the school's policy is on residency. it's typically NOT the same as residency for drivers' licenses, voting and all that jazz. it's also often different for grad students vs. undergrads.
  18. if the person who got into Florida is on here, how did they contact you?
  19. my daily schedule at the moment: get up, check e-mail, take out the dog. eat something, shower, dress, check e-mail. pretend to work on my thesis while I wait for the mail to come. check e-mail. experience crushing disappointment over lack of grad school letters. check e-mail. mope for about an hour. check e-mail. get mad at myself for moping, actually work on the thesis. check e-mail. walk the dog. check e-mail. make dinner, eat, check e-mail. check e-mail, go to bed. sound about right?
  20. I think you need to adjust the poll, to include whether or not people've gotten funding. I've got one admission under my belt, but no funding offer yet.
  21. dunno if anyone else is looking to be a future Tiger, but according to the grad director, LSU hasn't made any decisions yet.
  22. any idea what's up with Ohio State? My status on the web site is still "Evaluation".
  23. admissions stats and statements about how many got into what field both intrigue and irk me, because I'm a Byzantinist, so I'm in a different box at every school- Chicago and Harvard have Byzantium as its own field, at Penn and Ohio State I applied as ancient, at UIUC late antiquity, at St. Louis, Catholic and Michigan medieval, at LSU and Florida pre-modern Europe. if I weren't so completely in love with what I do, I'd probably resent being in such an obscure field
