Cavalier - your alias is really making me chuckle (and probably the other italy applicants too). "cavaliere" is what Italians call their wonderful PM, Silvio Berlusconi, and I can't help but think of it when I see your posts. Thank you for the amusement amid all my waiting anxiety!

Wow that sucks they are only notifying you now. This is one of my big fears - that they hadn't received my transcripts. Rachel had assured me that IIE would notify us if they didn't receive our transcripts within 4 weeks of making it past round 1, but apparently that isn't the case.

Thank you so much for that link! i'm sending this to everyone I know

I've been having the same exact worries!! I didn't even want to put it in writing because the idea is so frustrating

aaaand here's the blurb about medical clearance from the Fulbright website: http://us.fulbrightonline.org/resources_current_medical.html MEDICAL CLEARANCE PROCEDURE IIE will automatically mail out a Medical Report Form to every candidate who is being offered a grant. The forms will be mailed out a few days after the grant notification for the Foreign Scholarship Board. It is the grantee's responsibility to have the form complete in full. Please note that you may not begin your grant until we receive written notification from the State Department that you have medical clearance. The State Department will only accept medical reports on the original form. IIE can not fax medical report forms nor will IIE or the State Department accept complete forms that are faxed or not on the original form. Be advised that you should not, under any circumstances, return your forms incomplete. If you send in the form with anything left out or with any test results pending, the forms will be returned to you and further delay the clearance process. IIE is not permitted, under any circumstances, to send incomplete medical report forms to the State Department for clearance. If we do, they will be returned to us without clearance and will cause a further delay. Any form that is submitted to us incomplete will be photocopied and then mailed back to the student with a memo indicating what still needs to be completed. Once we receive your completed health forms it will take approximately three weeks for clearance to be given so please plan accordingly. Please be further advised that medical forms are sent down to the State Department every Friday morning. If your forms are not in our office by close of business Thursday, you will need to wait until the next mailing to the State Department the following week. The Medical Report Form must be received at IIE within three weeks from the date you received notification that you have been selected to receive a grant. If there will be a significant delay in returning your forms, please notify your IIE Program Manager via email. We recommend you schedule an appointment to see your doctor well in advance. Medical information submitted in the Medical Report Form which is found to be substantially inaccurate or incomplete may be grounds for grant termination or revocation.

First: Congratulations!! Second: Yeah I would get myself to the Dr's office asap. I think you only have 3 weeks to return that medical clearance form. I think it's just a note from your Dr. saying you are in good health (since they will be providing health ins. while you are abroad they probably want to establish there are no pre-existing conditions, ohhh lovely health insurance companies). Maybe there's something about it in the pre-departure info they posted on the US Fulbright website?

I believe you can add info to the sheet without being on the forum, so he could do it anonymously
-
thanks for letting us know! Will s/he add the info to the sheet?
-
not sure, but it's fixed now, that's just a formatting issue

the Poland rep is the same as the rest of Europe - Rachel Holskin, unless you mean reaching out directly to someone in the Polish Fulbright office specifically? http://us.fulbrightonline.org/program_regions_countries.html?id=3

hey i'm in the bay too! Could she go for maybe 3 months out of the 9? Like you go there for 3 months, then she comes to join you, then you finish the last 3 on your own? That way you wouldn't be apart for more than 3 months at a time. And it sounds like you guys are pretty committed, I really hope it all works out for you guys! it also doesn't sound like you really want to be in Finland for 9 months...

I totally agree with this. I'm in a very similar situation - my boyfriend may not be able to come with me if I receive the Fulbright. However, he would be able to come for a few months if he couldn't get an extended visa, and i'm pretty sure we can make it work for the other 6. There's always ways around the visa - she could possibly take some language classes and get a student visa for the time you are there, for example. I don't know what country you are applying to, but where there is a will, there's a way. It sounds like the real question is do you, Jonhecht89, want to be in the country you applied to for 9 months? And does your girlfriend want to put her life on hold while you are pursuing yours?

If you apply as an at-large you do not receive the extra rating from a university. However, they still look at your application just the same as all the rest, so you aren't really at any disadvantage. Keep in mind, some of those people may be receiving low score ratings from their university, so it's not always a good thing!

I didn't apply to an ETA, but full grant applications often also include what you will do with your free time to get involved in the local community. I said I was going to take Tango lessons. Random, but honestly something i've wanted to do for a long time. Also, a friend of mine who received an ETA to S. Korea's project was about "soju culture", which basically meant going out and drinking all the time!

Yeah I think the issue is when your additional funding DUPLICATES the funding from Fulbright. For example, if your additional funding is to cover housing, which Fulbright already covers, it is a duplicate source of funding. However, if your research requires you to buy some costly microscope, which isn't covered by Fulbright, then it's ok. Or if they provide funding for dependents which is also not covered by Fulbright in many countries, then it's ok.

The breakdown for the Finnish Fulbright grant is all on their website: http://www.fulbright.fi/index2.php?lang=en&m=3&id=1607 Looks like it states there that it's 1000 to 1200 euros/month plus a travel allowance

I can't say for sure, might be worth asking the Germany contact person about. But I would think the idea is that you spend your time working on your project, not making money by spending time on other work/employment.

I'm pretty sure you cannot accept outside money while on a Fulbright: https://us.fulbrightonline.org/documents/resources/Terms_Conditions.pdf (item number 3)

My project splits time between Rome and Padova, and examines how independent (Radio Libera) radio programs are designed to cover the topic of immigration and if radio is adapting for a new immigrant audience. It's hard to pack into a single category, it's a blend of radio/communications/immigration studies. what about you?

I'm new to this board, and I haven't heard back yet, but I want to say how happy I am to find a group of people that are as anxious about this as I am! Unfortunately Italy seems to be one of the last countries to notify applicants (so typical, hahah). Congratulations to everyone who has been accepted!
