  1. My current experiences are south of yours (Cambridge), but I'll go out on a limb that a few things are pretty similar. St. Andrews certainly has a reputation of being out of the way, but it's also a location that's been dealing with students for 600 years. It will have what you need day to day. I second akacentimetre in the bike suggestion; They come in very handy. Your biggest transportation challenge outside of the town will be when you run out of sources in St. Andrews itself. If you're working on something with a Scottish focus (or a Scottish location to the sources), you'll be fine, but if what you need is in London, that's when you'll curse St. Andrew's location. Get yourself a student railcard ASAP (actually that advice applies to wherever on that impressive list of UK applications you end up), they save you quite a bit of money. Sorry for the rather disjointed bits of advice - my head is too full of Scott's approach on Governmentality to think straight. Oh, and congratulations!
  2. And pigs might fly! I doubt you'll need it, with acceptences from Chapel Hill, UT Austin and Amherst, but if you want any info on CUNY, let me know. I was a student and taught at Hunter College, CUNY, for several years, and I have friends at every stage of the CUNY GC PhD program.
  3. Viggosloof28, how on earth did you hear from CUNY so quickly? When I applied there last year, they notified me 2 days before my end of the decision deadline, and I was already in their system. If you've managed to cut CUNY's Gordian Knot of red tape, please tell me how?
  4. And had anyone told us, we would probably have laughed in their faces. (Careful, this is how rumours of affairs and conspiracies start.)
  5. I saw the entry come up on the results board, smiled, and said to myself "I know who that is." Congratulations!

    Need Advice!

Check your still outstanding schools' deferment policy - if they let you, you can do the year teaching and then come back knowing you've got your next step lined up and ready for you.
  8. Hey guys, I know there's a few people on here who applied to Oxford. Apparently we should hear next week. According to a posted on one of the British forums who called them, all decisions have been made, and they just need the Director of Graduate Studies or someone similar to sign off on them. In completely unrelated news, I'm suddenly worried again.
  9. Hi all, my congratulations to all the acceptances! Can anyone claim yesterday's Oxford MA acceptance? If so, did you apply for the November or January deadline? Many thanks and congratulations.
  10. Pretty poor. I know a few military historians who work as official historians for regiments or divisions. Outside academe, the military in one way or another are probably the largest employer, not sure about current hiring numbers however.
  11. I have to claim a Columbia and a Harvard rejection - Harvard by post, columbia and email to check the site. Got admitted to Exeter early today.
  12. I may just do that. Thanks for the congratulations and the offer!
  13. Thanks guys! No college decision yet. What college were you accepted to, Agora?
  14. Last year my Georgetown rejection came via post.
