  1. Hi, I just took my driving test today, in Missouri and as mentioned earlier it all went pretty smoothly and extremely fast ! Written test, followed by vision test and by driving test... and I got my temporary license 2h after arriving at the local DMV. Nevertheless, I have a question for you other international students: is it normal that I only got a 1-year driver license although my F-1 visa is valid for 5 years? Shouldn't I have had a 3-year one (in Missouri either 3y or 6y)? Thanks in advance for your answer on this !
  2. I am an international student from Western Europe and applied obviously from abroad, while working as a consultant (a lot you can imagine) and still managed to get into a PhD... I managed to send my applications well on time and surprise, most applications are done online which can be done from the US, Europe or even from a small island with internet. Another thing, I come from a system with no gpa or such and different grading system where the highest score is only perfection and can be achieved by professors... but again surprise, they convert it and are used to do it.... morale: do not worry, there is no difference in applying from abroad or from the US, apart for the interviews but there again you can take a few weeks and visit the universities as the interviews happen more or less at the same period... nevertheless, good luck for your application process !
  3. Hi Cardnav, Thanks for your quick reply. I might for the check then although I believe that the fees are not that small either :-/ Just want to be sure that once the check is deposited, I don't have to wait forever to have the money cleared... the check will already be in USD and on my future US's bank name. Moreover, will they clear/deposit the full amount or keep some fee money to themselves. Actually, I have done wire transfers in the past so I know the fees (which are big as you mentioned) but never used checks before (not very common in my country). Cheers
  4. Hello everyone, As I will moving from Europe in a couple of weeks to the US, I am dealing with last-minute issues/questions. I have on my checkings account in Europe a certain amount (already converted) in USD. This amount is for me to help settling in the US. My question is a follows: which is the easiest, fastest and cheapest (might be different answers): - a personal check written in USD by my European bank on my USD funds to be cashed in at arrival (do the banks in the US take a high fee on those? is the cash-in immediate when I open my bank account in the US,... ?) - a wire transfer in USD from my European bank to my newly opened US account (once it is opened) (is the fee taken by the banks in the US high? how many days does it take to process, ...?) Thank you all for your advice & help on this.
  5. wrong forum ! better is to post on the Decisions page !
  6. fsmn36: Actually I was in Bemidji for our 2 week orientation followed by 2 months in Hackensack. I loved being there. Nature is amazing with lakes everywhere and being there in the summer is really great ! Nice ! I heard a lot about Moorhead... guess it is freezing in the winter but really amazing in the spring and summer ?! As for your experience in England, Portsmouth is a nice town and London is indeed great (I worked in London for 2 years a couple of years ago). And I can understand you would like to come and visit more of Europe, as there are so many (too many even) things to see and visit but Italy was a very good choice, that's for sure (I studied in Italy - in Milan for my exchange program). But all that to say that Mizzou will certainly be a great experience (how long is your MA?). I am looking forward to it and still a bit nervous as I have now been working for 6 years (so out of school since 2003 :-/). But it will be for sure an amazing experience !
  7. fsmn36: Nice to hear about your experience in England ! And really nice to hear about the long and sweet fall (can imagine you coming from MN - spent a summer in MN working at Concordia Language Villages - really nice state and twin cities really nice as well). No worries about the other post - just trying to keep everyone filling in this one - as you said, not that many people going to Mizzou or to many lurkers ! I am going for a PhD at Mizzou... so it will be a long and exciting (I hope) experience ! What is your background: where and what did you study? what is your experience in England and where in England !
  8. Yes ! I will be going to Mizzou too ! See other post below about University of Missouri-Columbia !
  9. Thank you for your reply. First of all, good luck on your PhD in Dallas. Should be a very interesting experience too ! I am from Continental Europe, so the weather should be pretty much the same (this year, we had a lot of snow and cold weather - 5 degrees F for a couple of weeks). But I will pretty pleased to have 4 seasons (as here we do not have spring, fall and sometimes not even summer). I will definitely get a car to drive around and to campus (have applied for a parking permit). If you have any additional advice, please send them to me Cheers,
  10. I am counting on once or twice a year, not more. Summer and Winter/Christmas
  11. Hi arwgf4, Thank you for the details. I am moving for a PhD in Management, so moving to Cornell Hall for work and I found a place outside of town, nearby Brandon Woods in a nice condo with a Vet Student ! It is nice to hear that it is a nice place to live and study... and pretty cheap too ! As you say it is quite big, you will confirm that a car is always better to move around in Columbia and outside of Columbia, if one wants to go St. Louis, KC or even further to Chicago? I am really looking forward moving to Columbia althoug my very first choice was UNC ? ! I have only had one experience in the past in the Midwest and that was in Northern Minnesota which was really nice (in the summer ...) ! Where are moving to now? For further studying or going to work? Thanks again, portugabel
  12. Hello every supposedly now-admitted PhD student in Business, I was wondering if any of you was going to attend the following pre-conference/consortium which takes places before the Annual AoM conference in Chicago (this year in August): AOM NDSC - New Doctoral Student Consortium - Home Moreover, what do future students involved with Management (incl. Strategy, OB, ...) think about attending this even before having started the PhD? Is it a good opportunity to meet people from other universities, to interact with your fellow PhD students in Management? Or is it still too early and not worth spending money on this? Last question... shouldn't it be more interesting then to attend the whole conference? Thanks all for your input, comments, feedback !
  13. Hi, My current situation is that I have my visa interview beginning of next week. I have filled in all documents and paid all fees. My problem is that I had a speeding fine and, in my country, you have to appear in court for them to tell you how much you have to pay and if they will keep your driving license for 1 or 2 weeks. This is my first time ever getting a fine or speeding ticket and am a bit confused as I hope it will not have an impact on my F-1 visa application... Do I need to mention this on my visa application? Thank you for your advice, Cheers
  14. Accepted: somewhere in the Midwest Rejected: UNC (Kenan), Vanderbilt (Owen), WUStL (Olin), GWU, Oklahoma (Price), Texas (McCombs) Waiting: still a few more Regarding Kansas... Phd in Business will be accepting no one because of funding problems (think it is written on their website).
