  1. LOL I get that feeling too. But at least we both got into some schools! Since I've been accepted, though, I've started thinking they will find out how lame I really am... I can't help but thinking of the one year I played high school basketball-- I did really awesome in try-outs, but my total lack of skill and athleticism eventually shone through, and the coach regretted letting me on the team. I have the feeling the same thing is gonna happen here, especially since my advisor is brilliant and can likely see right through me. Anyway, to answer your question I have ass-loads of Asian studies (BA in religion focusing on Buddhist Studies + living in Asia for the last 6 years, the last three of which have been spent pursuing an MA in Buddhist Studies at a Thai Buddhist Uni), but my languages are terrible compared to most successful applicants. I only have one year of Sanskrit and one year of Pali, which is inadequate. I speak a fair bit of Japanese (at least enough to understand my Japanese wife when she gets pissed and yells at me in her native tongue), but can't read it, and anyway it's not relevant to my program. My French is ok, but all but useless in my field. By the way Duli which schools have you applied to/been accepted to/rejected from?
  2. Two MA results in the last few days-- Indiana rejection and Chicago admit. Just shows how much of this process is a crapshoot-- accepted to 2nd (MA) choice and rejected from my last, 14th choice in the matter of a few days.
  3. No, I'm quite sure there isn't. I've searched high and low on the internet and come up with nothing. NRC may rank them, but the most recent NRC rankings are like 12 years old or something. I think it would be essentially impossible to rank Asian Studies Depts as a whole-- it's such a broad field, and most departments have strengths in only a few sub-fields. Several universities also have multiple departments or centres, i.e. for East, South, Southeast Asian studies. There really isn't such a thing as a comprehensive Asian studies dept with strengths across the board that I know of, perhaps with the exception of Washington. Other places that are great in EALC suck ass in SALC (Columbia, Yale come to mind). Such would completely skew the rankings. Anyway, OP, what field are you in? I have a pretty good idea of the South Asian and Indian Buddhist Studies programs out there and created my own personal ranking tailored to my specific interests. I can answer any questions about those fields if you are interested.
  4. You can stay in the UCLA guest house. $144 per night. Its a bit expensive, but certainly convenient. My department is paying for one night in the guest house and my domestic flight, as well as some local transportation I believe.
  5. I'm visiting UCLA, the place I'm 99% sure I'll be going to (top choice). I'm also in Asia, but moving back to the States at the end of March. I'm buying a one-way ticket from Bangkok to LA, and UCLA is paying for my flight from LA to North Carolina. Most schools will pay for domestic flights, so maybe you could pay for the International flight and have your schools jet you around the US.
  6. Got into Penn SA Studies MA today.
  7. I can facilitate the third item on your list, if you like.
  8. I've suffered from severe anxiety disorder/panic attacks for 3 years. I was having a very rough time before my first acceptance. Take solace that you didn't get an attack at the very unfortunate time I did-- during the GRE I had TWO panic attacks. I had to leave the room during my verbal section for about 5 minutes and snort a ground-up Xanax. My score was obviously not as good as it could have been, and I think is a contributing factor to a lot of my rejections (5 out of 6). Fortunately, my only acceptance was to my top choice, so I don't have to regret it forever.
  9. Wow. Guess I didn't get in then. At least I know I'm not on the top of their list . If I get an admission now it'll obviously be because somebody declined their offer.
  10. Nothing yet- just checked the website.
  11. i voted no-- I SHOULD have mine by now but all the apps and waiting stress have made me avoid doing my thesis.
  12. I usually write e-mails about my status only if I've already heard through the grapevine that decisions have been made-- gradcafe is great for that. Then, no harm could be done.
  13. YES! First acceptance, and to my top choice, too-- UCLA! UCLA might seem an odd choice to some of you theology guys, but I'm in Buddhist Studies and it's the best program in the country in my field (through Asian L&L, not Religion)! To the above posters who haven't gotten in anywhere yet-- I just realized with this acceptance that the world is not over. Like the above poster, as I told him in a PM, I was devastated by my Washington rejection, and was totally depressed. You guys will all get in somewhere, I hope! Good luck to you all!!!!
