  1. I would email the department about your admission status, preferably the graduate admissions administrator or someone similar. If they don't respond (which they often don't), try emailing the department chair or someone else on the BME staff. They'll see your email and respond eventually. You just have to be forward about it. Good luck!
  2. I'm a UCB BioE undergrad. First of all, stay in America! It's where BioE is strongest. The BioE program at Yale is alright (I've checked). It's an ivy, so it will get you recognition, but it's not particularly well known as a stronghold for BioE (this might matter when you're getting a job). The UCB/UCSF Masters program is new, but both institutions are very good. As someone already mentioned, UCB is particularly strong in engineering and UCSF is strong in medicine, so you'd get a wide variety of choices in terms of research or course topics. I would lean towards UCB/UCSF.
  3. Hey guys, so it seems like I'm definitely going to Columbia for the Masters... unless one of my remaining (Ph.D.) offers miraculously turns out to be a yes. Is it still worth going to the open house, since it doesn't really affect my decision? I'm having a hard time figuring out if it's worth it or not. Appreciate any feedback. Thanks.
  4. Am I the only one getting way more rejections than acceptances? I feel like shit.

I applied to 11 programs, ten PhD and one MA. I've been rejected from seven of the PhD, accepted to the MA, waitlisted at one PhD and have yet to hear from the two others. So you are not the only one!

add me to the list of people with many more rejections than acceptances :)

  5. haha, I turned in my application around November 20th. So it took them over 3 months. A little disappointed I didn't get in the Ph.D. I'll have to pay up 40k + 2 years living costs now...
  6. Just got accepted to Columbia. GPA not high enough for Ph.D, offered M.S. instead. Will probably be going.
  7. Thanks. Good luck! I'm sure you'll get in somewhere!

  8. I applied to USC like Nov 20-something. It's taking them so long...

I'm sorry to hear that you haven't gotten any admits yet. :( That's unfortunate. No safety schools? UNC was technically my safety school, and that's the only school I've gotten into for Ph.D so far. Admissions are tough these days.

My specialization will hopefully be in biomedical devices and p...

  9. One of the faculty members I talked to said that letters would be sent out within the next week. Might differ between departments though.
  10. I'm still waiting on Boston, Carnegie Mellon, Pittsburgh, USC, and Irvine. I can't believe I still haven't heard back from so many. But I got into the M.S. program at Columbia so I think I might do that instead and go straight into industry.

  11. Hi Angie. Sorry to hear you haven't heard back :/

I applied under to the program through the UNC application. I got an invitation on Feb 11 for an informal visit on March 2-4. But I only got my official letter of acceptance literally 2 days ago (March 23). I'm probably not going to attend there though. Still waiting on 5 schools before I make a decision.

    Dunno if that helps. B...

  12. I probably should have mentioned this earlier, but what if I can pay for it through a combination of my parents' savings and working as a TA (no loans)?
  13. Is it normal for people to visit a school for a Masters program? They don't pay for you like for a Ph.D. visit, so it's a lot less convenient, but is it important to visit? The only visiting student information I can find is for prospective undergraduates...
  14. I'm sure there have already been a million topics on something like this, but I'm a bit conflicted... So I got into the Ph.D. program in the joint Biomedical Engineering department at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and North Carolina State University, Raleigh. I also got into the M.S. program in Biomedical Engineering at Columbia University, mostly due to the fact that my GPA was too low for a Ph.D. I'm still thankful to get an M.S. offer. So right now I'm leaning towards Columbia just cause I've always wanted to live in New York and also cause it's more prestigious and a better BioE program overall. However, I'm getting no funding at Columbia, whereas my Ph.D. offer at UNC-NCSU is fully funded + stipend. My goal is to work in the biomedical devices industry, but I'm still not sure whether I want just an M.S. or a full on Ph.D. Some people say a Ph.D. would be good while others say that an M.S. is better cause a lot of times Ph.D.s are overqualified and it's harder to get a job these days. Any opinions/suggestions? p.s. I'm still waiting on 5 schools for Ph.D.
