  1. I've been out of the grad school world for a good while* now; I'm making a pretty decent salary teaching at a respectable (but not top) research university. 11k wont be fun, but I can make it work (This is to answer that it is definitely doable, and that I'm PhD, not MA!) *Edit: can't give away my age, haha.
  2. Wasn't me, either. Gainesville is totally doable on 11k per year, but you'll probably want a part-time/weekend job if you don't have a garden, eat organic/"healthy," or prepare your own dinner every night. :\ *Edit: I don't speak from experience, but many of my friends are at UF.
  3. Yes, I would wait until Friday to call. I'm a sissy and refuse; I've called far too many times over the past two years not to make a bad impression at this point. Sorry, Charlie!
  4. That's what I was thinking but hoping against. I left my phone at home just to keep focused (see how well that's working?) on grading papers during office hours. If they're not done notifying, perhaps I'll come home to a pleasant voice mail... or maybe I should keep holding my breath? Good luck to everyone. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for us all (yes, even if we're all competing for the same few seats!).
  5. ...what, all English majors don't have James Franco's 62-credit, multiple-school stamina or fat pocketbook to make that work? Just kidding. I wish I could do what he (supposedly) did/is doing. I would be ALL OVER the place! Hope you can work something out so that you can take both (or, you know, either would be nice, right?) I've been lusting over the Rationality, Irrationality, and Modernity (Susan Hegeman's) course at UF for Fall 2011, which is entirely outside my specialization.
  6. Also, am I the only one torturing myself by looking over Fall 2011 courses at institutions of interest? Are any of you lusting over specific courses offered anywhere?
  7. I'm surprised there aren't more results posted. Tomorrow's March 1st... is the adcom simply bogged down in fighting over particular applicants of interest, or are they having more funding issues? Or are admitted students not aware of TGC? Sigh.
  8. Even more time for us to bite our finger nails, eh?
  9. I'm sure admits will be hearing from them through AT LEAST March 6th. My friend got her rejection letter March 13th last year, but my friend who got in got called the day before our spring break (March 5th). If we assume admits were called through March 6th, it leaves ample time to have those rejection letters sent out by then. I was on the waitlist last year and put my life on hold until April 14th---the last decision came in then. It was stressful, to say the least. I hope to all things good and righteous I'm in this year.
  10. I've heard numbers from 12 to 22. I think it depends on the year.
  11. BTW, if the admit wants to come forward... at what time did you receive the phone call? What was the conversation like? I've been fantasizing about this conversation for years now, and I'm still not sure what the DGS, POI, or admin assistant says.
  12. I'm PhD---keeping my phone on in class JUST IN CASE. To be honest, I'll probably assign small group discussion, duck out, and accept whatever calls come my way today. I know, horrible, but it's for mental health purposes. Promise, I'm a good professor otherwise! Congratulations to the admit!
  13. I'm beginning to freak out, folks. After looking at the results page several times over, I do believe UF will begin calling tomorrow. Please let all your closest anonymous GradCafe friends know your status immediately after notifying your family.
  14. So true. This is my top choice program. I've told my students that I'm waiting for an extremely important call, so I'm leaving my phone on vibrate during class just to see when/if they leave a VM! I know it seems highly unprofessional, but they're all rooting for me From the looks of it, we'll be hearing soon via phone if we're accepted. *crosses fingers for all of us*
  15. I'm not sure what information they send. I just got one myself and really don't get Ziggs either, but I suppose it's there in the future for all our "when am I being Googled?" needs. I hope you hear soon! Shoot, I hope *I* hear soon.
  16. My friend has been getting Google'd all over the place, and he only applied at UF; if you don't have an account somewhere that lets you know when your name has been searched, you should get one! Being Googled is either a great sign or an ominous one. I just made an account at Ziggs for that reason.
  17. Has anyone received official letters via mail yet? I know I was rejected, but I haven't received a letter yet... and from what I hear, they're sending personal responses rather than a mass form. Can anyone confirm? I'm out of the game across the board this round, so I'm anxious to see where I screwed up for their program.
  18. Yo mama. (Okay, lame Faulkner joke. I know.)
