  1. violingeek: I have gotten acquainted with the department somewhat at Western and they have alot going for them. As for making the transition, I don't have any first hand experience in this myself, but it seems like they fund their U.S. students pretty reasonably. Life in that part of Ontario feels basically like living anywhere in the midwest or upstate new york, no major cultural shocks to deal with. I'm not too familiar with the program at UMass, but Western is definitely one of the best Canadian programs and they have just made a major theorist hire, newly minted from UChicago.
  2. Hear hear. This is an important point of perspective: in the end, the REAL business is what's going to happen/what we will do once we've all matriculated.
  3. Is anybody here going to CUNY's Prospective Students' day? Have they sent any information about it to anyone??
  4. waitlisted at princeton today. I guess I'm glad they didn't outright reject me, but the lack of closure and prolongation of the waiting game is a real bummer. Whatever. Look like plenty of fine people here got passed over like me
  5. On the contrary, I really got the wrong vibe from Eastman even though, on a number of purely objective counts, it's a great place. Ultimately, I'm planning on letting intuition decide (to an extent).
  6. At Eastman -- and I interviewed for theory by the way -- there was a battery of 3 interviews: one for keyboard/aural skills (no dictation), one for research, and one sight analysis session. Keep in mind: you may not actually get interviews with people who read your submissions! I wasn't, and I was interviewed by a single faculty member who wanted to get a general idea of my research area. The musicology applicants, on the other hand, were interviewed by a panel of three people who read the apps. Accordingly, they were asked targeted questions about the work they submitted. In other words, be ready for a variety of conditions in your interviews, folks. All in all, Eastman theory interviews seemed most interested in identifying fit, to be sure, but also in identifying who would be a good TA, I'm not convinced being a top-notch scholar was the top concern.
  7. it looks like 15 people were invited to interview at Eastman this year for theory. I don't quite know how big the theory pool or general applicant pools typically are or how big the incoming cohort is though.
  8. brandeis has a dedicated women's and gender studies track in their musicology phd, and there's suzanne cusick at nyu
  9. Hi all, So an interesting thing happened with my GRE scores which just came back today. I'm very pleased with my 165 (96%) verbal, and 169 (98%) quantitative, but unhappy about my 4.5 (72%) analytical writing score. I'm applying this fall to humanities phD's (historical musicology/music theory) and I was wondering if my AW score would put me out of the running at top schools. I feel that my writing sample will be the basis for any real judgment of my work/ability, but should I expect that my AW score might cause committees to look askance at my application?
