  1. BA in Asian American Studies and another in Economics. Took two undergraduate sociology classes as a non-degree student after I graduated! Now I'm working on an MA in Sociology because I didn't get into any PhD programs last go around! I will say though, after just one semester in my grad program, I've grown a lot in my understanding of sociological theory! My SOPs from last year and this year are night and day. good luck everyone!!! ahhhh the wait! lol
  2. thinking about this 24/7

  3. Hey H2bt I know you said it was awkward, but hopefully it was informative nonetheless. From your experience, do you have do's or don'ts that you can share? thanks! socphd82
  4. hey g8! Good luck on your weekend! That's pretty exciting! I have an informal visit scheduled in two weeks. Yikes, coming from california, I'm going to be super cold so be prepared for the weather as well =P As for me, I'm re-reading some of the scholarship that this professor wrote, as well as articles written by other faculty members. From my correspondence, this potential advisor said many faculty would be interested in what I want to study and so I'm going to review other faculty's work and hopefully speak to as many of them as possible. I also plan on discussing her research with an emphasis on how it informed my own interests. Lastly, I want to engage in a dialogue surrounding current theoretical debates on sexuality. homework homework homework =) Best Wishes!
  5. Hi Socguy, Thanks for that response. I love stats and so I don't mind the stat heaviness. I'm up for the challenge of the program. My ultimate goal is to use the program as a stepping stone to a PhD program in sociology. As a candidate that lacks research experience, I'm hoping this program will make me more competitive and attractive. Other aspects of my application 3.3 GPA from UCLA major Economics/Asian American Studies. 1220 GRE scores (500 V 720 Q) 5 writing. Research interest: LGBT identity development. What do you think?
  6. I just got an invitation from the Graduate Director at UC Irvine to apply to a 1 year Master's program in Demographics and Social Analysis (DASA). Looking into it a little more, it sounds very similar to Chicago's MAPPS program. Apparently students take classes with other PhD students and usually one or two students get into UC Irvine's PhD program upon completion, or so the email says. My current option right now is to pursue a terminal masters program at San Jose State where I can work with Dr. James Lee who's an identity theorist. I'm trying to weigh out the pros and cons, if I were accepted into Irvine's DASA program, between both. Any thoughts on DASA? Any thoughts in general? Thanks
  7. For those that might still be waiting, this is what I recieved from the Graduate Coordinator: "The Sociology faculty made first-round admission decisions last month. We have not yet announced decisions for anyone other than this initial group of prospective students." Good Luck everyone. Hang in there.
  8. I just emailed both UC Irvine and UC Riverside. Sending the email for a status update just retriggered the nerves of waiting for a response! HELP ME! ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh sigh that felt good.
  9. program: Sociology PhD Applied: UCI, UCR, UCLA, UCSC, UCSD Rejected: UCLA, UCSD, UCSC No response: UCI, UCR I totally agree with you! At this point, I'm sort of over the anxiety of waiting. I applied at the end of february to three MA programs in California. I may have to self-fund my MA program, but I'm determined to start my grad career this fall, as opposed to waiting it out ANOTHER YEAR! AH!
