  1. Thanks! It says no tasks required at this time, so I guess I'm good to go.
  2. Does anyone know if this applies to Fellows granted the GRF this year? I thought all we had to do was declare our Fellowship status for the coming year, but then I don't know why they'd send this to us/me, since I've already done that ....
  3. I know a girl who did an art undergraduate degree at VCU, and she really liked it!
  4. I am from the US. Traveled to: China, Thailand, Iceland, Costa Rica, Mexico, Bahamas, Canada, France, Switzerland, Germany, Italy Lived in: China, US
  5. I can't imagine having to do comps my first year.... Luckily in my program we do them after year 2. Good luck, guys.
  6. ^ I know someone who did back in the early 2000s with a basic science proposal. But they tightened up on eligibility requirements this year and there's no longer any way for clin/counseling people to do it at all, even if their science is basic research with clinical applications. The program solicitation now phrases it such that they will not fund you if you are getting a clinical/counseling degree regardless of your research focus. See the program solicitation: http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2014/nsf14590/nsf14590.htm#elig
  7. Someone on a previous page also said that an E is weighted more heavily if the reviewer in question mostly gives lower scores than an E from a reviewer who gives lots of VGs/Es out. The source was fairly legit iirc, as well.
  8. That was my situation. Some of the feedback reviewers give isn't necessarily applicable to your research, bc sometimes they misinterpret things -- which is what happened to me on the HM round. So this time around I was careful to adjust my phrasing to make the design of my study more obvious. I also recommend keeping in mind that next year you will be competing against other first year grad students, whereas this year you were competing against other seniors. So your application should be commensurately improved. Develop your future directions further, come up with a new way to analyze the data that could generate novel predictions in itself, catch up on how the literature has developed and see if there are any interesting findings that change your proposed project in any way. But the good news is, HM is a winner without funding. You already had a really amazing proposal, and the only thing that held you back was the limited funds for awards. You're on the right track, so just keep building that momentum. I also suggest having a former NSF awardee read your application and give feedback; I found that invaluable, myself. Good luck next year! eta: As far as letter-writers go, your grad school adviser will be one. You should probably have a second letter also be from someone at your graduate institution. Third can be from undergrad. You will meet people when you get there who can fill this role!
  9. E/E E/E E/VG Awarded I honestly cannot even believe my life right now (1st year grad student, HM last year) Congratulations to everyone who won!
  10. ^ It's totally possible! I did it. Either one is nice. Carrboro is maybe a little more bike/walk-friendly, but there's a great bus system.
  11. That's awesome! Super jealous, and you should definitely take this chance to relax and unwind and treat yourself for having survived a hard fall semester. --- I'm a lot busier this semester than I was in the fall, which is a good thing, but also a stressful thing. I'm trying to adjust my time management patterns because what worked for me last semester is definitely not working anymore.
  12. Chapel Hill is definitely not more diverse than Durham (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chapel_Hill,_North_Carolina#Demographics vs http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Durham,_North_Carolina#Demographics) but I doubt you'd find much animosity toward mixed-race families there. It's very progressive, partly due to the presence of the university. I'm mixed race myself, and while I felt more comfortable in Durham, I certainly didn't feel uncomfortable in Chapel Hill. Whether you live in Durham or Chapel Hill might be partially dependent on what kind of commute you're comfortable with, as well as what type of city you want to live in. Chapel Hill has more of the small town aesthetic, whereas Durham is more artsy (there's a revival of the downtown area going on right now -- lots of food trucks, repurposed warehouses, art galleries). I've lived in both and liked both. Both Durham and Chapel Hill have lots of great child-oriented places. Check out the Museum of Life and Science in Durham (I loved that place growing up!). There's also the Botanical Gardens in Chapel Hill, Duke Gardens in Durham, Durham's food truck rodeos (lots of kids there), both cities have YMCAs.... Raleigh, nearby, also has the state-run museums of natural history, etc.
  13. I remember being this time last year, when I was hearing back about interviews + acceptances myself. It's awesome to see all of you being so successful. I'm really happy for y'all. CONGRATULATIONS!
  14. Last semester I did one four-study project. This semester I'm doing seven multiple-study projects. Literally seven times as much work. Is it crazy if I'm excited about that?
  15. I didn't get as much done over break as I'd have liked, unfortunately. I had a meeting with my adviser yesterday though and we have a lot of good stuff planned for this semester. I'm pretty optimistic, but then again, I loathe having time off school -- I'd much rather have classes etc to occupy myself.
  16. And code academy is a great way to start learning some simple code, too. What's nice about programming is that many programming jobs don't require demonstrable education in software engineering. As long as you are able to actually perform the tasks, and do so efficiently, that's what's important.
  17. Good teaching skills to teach at the high school level. Programming skills. Any kind of knowledge of marketing or I/O stuff. Any kind of experience with government or policy. That's all I can come up with right now.
  18. I'm not a SW, but I very much doubt it. You haven't caused harm to anyone or even to yourself.
  19. Most social places interview! Where all are you applying?
  20. UNC Chapel Hill, University of Iowa, UC Boulder, University of Kansas, Rutgers, University of Alabama all come to mind as R1s in small towns. You'd have to do research on their cog psych programs though for purposes of fit with professors etc.
  21. That really sucks, dude. :/ My sympathies.
