  1. You can work on my thesis draft now?
  2. Yes. I didn't have all of my stuff together in time for some November deadlines at certain schools. I wish I would have.
  3. I'm in the same position. I just got laid off from my job, I'm here until the end of next week. I know that if I can get a job in my field in this economy, it will only be through networking. But if I end up in school, I don't want to screw anyone over. I've decided to hold of on searching until early April or so, hopefully by then, I'll have a decision, or at least be very close to knowing what I'm going to do. At least I'm eligible for unemployment.
  4. So yesterday I got my first program acceptance (yay!), but it is to my safety school. Still yay, but I'm not sure if I will end up going there. If i had to say right now, I'd say probably not. In the email the department sent me, they mentioned that they are nominating me for a scholarship and asked me to fill out the required application, which includes writing a one-page essay about my future plans. My question is this: How should I respond to their email? I was planning on thanking them and saying that I would have the application back to them in the next few days. But does this imply that I will accept their offer should I get the scholarship? Should I make any mention at all about whether or not I will accept? I know that they must know I probably have other applications out, but since the funding process is different for MFAs than for PhDs (i.e. there usually isn't much if any funding for MFA programs) I'm not sure if my returning the application is a tacit acceptance. I know I don't *have* to go to any school, no matter what they think, I just don't want to be a jerk about this. Thoughts?
  5. Ohh, man. I wish I could focus on my thesis. I am dragging my feet, owe my advisor an outline tomorrow, KNOW that the clock is ticking as I'm procrastinating, and that if I don't get going I'll spend a miserable summer in the library working up until the last minute, and yet I STILL can't focus at all.
  6. I'm a little more optimistic about the cost of living in the city. I've been here for 6 years, and I live in a studio on the Upper East Side of Manhattan (I've been in this apt for a couple of years) in a safe neighborhood right near the subway for just over $1k. This is an unusually good deal, sure, but I found it on Craigslist so it can be done. Friends of mine have shares in the "good" parts of Brooklyn for $700-$900. It can definitely be done. Another friend lives in a beautiful one bedroom with a modern kitchen and walk-in closet in Carroll Gardens (a lovely, safe, convenient part of Brooklyn) that she found through a broker recently for $1400. (Not that you could necessarily afford that, but just to give an idea.) Apartment prices have definitely gotten cheaper over the past 6 months. I can't really say about living on a certain amount with a child, since I don't have one, but I think if you budget carefully, and aren't making large payments on other debts, etc. a single person can definitely live in NYC on that amount. Good luck!
  7. Yes! I, too, am pretending/trying to write a thesis (at night/on the weekends, ugh.) while checking these boards and emails constantly. At least when I'm at work I'm getting paid while I worry. Multitasking!
  8. I'm not sure about my Plan B yet, but a friend just directed me to this: http://www.thisamericanlife.org/Radio_E ... pisode=205 A great This American Life about "Plan B" Enjoy!
  9. I'm getting all that annoying Columbia spam, too. And on the heels of that, my 2nd rejection (not from Columbia.) Wooo.
  10. When something similar to this happened to me, I called the recommender directly to ask about it. I know you don't have his number, but it seems like calling the department and asking someone there for it would be the way to go. Good luck.
  11. Called for my interview. Emailed for my rejection.
