  1. I recently took a sign language class and was thinking about asking the professor for a letter. A friend of mine told me that grad schools don't take letters from deaf professors seriously, but I don't understand why this would be true. I am going into Speech Pathology, so it is relevant to my field. Does anyone know if there is any validity to this?

    Thanks!

My God... I hope that's not true at all because that sounds just awful. I've taken ASL and I can't say enough good things about the class and the professor. It's perfectly relevant to Speech Path. Where/why did your friend hear this?

  2. Has this happened to anyone else? Maybe someone can offer me some words of advice of what to do?

Ummm... That is ridiculous. I am really sorry about this. I realize that the class is full, but I agree with Flotsam -- if you're local enough, go in and talk with the head of the department and possibly the people who offered you the aid. Is there even a waitlist you could be put on the for the last-minuters who drop in August? Or, if they have given you a definite 'no' for this year, maybe there's a way you could defer on that awesome aid for a year and reapply again next year? With the thought of having the aid again? Can you do that? You must have had a pretty awesome application to be given a full ride! I'm not sure how these things work (older and wiser people, feel free to jump in) but try to explain your situation and maaaaaaaybe they could work something out, even if it's a year from now. Let us know how it works out! Good luck.

  3. Maybe it would be more appropriate to start a new thread (if one hasn't been created yet, sorry if it has -- posting on the fly!) BUT... what is everyone doing to finance their lovely SLP degrees? I am 1000% grateful for my acceptance and really looking forward to this part of my life in the fall, but I am kind of starting to worry about how much all this will cost.

What kind of loans are you all taking out (not just for living, but books, supplies, and so on), if any? Oh, and what about living situations? Is everyone making a big move, or staying pretty local? I'm just trying to get a feel for what students seem to do. I am on the young end of the spectrum and this is a huge lifestyle change for me, as I am sure it will be for you all, too. Any comments about money/living/expenses are welcomed and appreciated. Good luck to you all in finalizing your plans.

  4. Hmmm...

I see on the "Results" board that perspective grad students are talking about putting down deposits on multiple schools with the intentions of reneging the contract later on and not attending. I understand there is a certain amount of insecurity and anxiety about waiting it out until the last possible moment to see if you are accepted off the waitlists but do you really have the money to forfeit for these deposits of acceptance and is that really fair to those who are waiting to get into the schools you really have no intentions of attending? Professionally, it looks bad to go back on an agreement (and I have no idea how well networked these programs are) but I would be more concerned about those poor folks who can't get off the waitlists because some people are double-dipping and, in some cases, triple-dipping.

    Just my measly 2-cents.

(ten minutes later....) Okay, maybe it isn't as crucial at the Masters degree level to maintain some contractual integrity when accepting an offer, making the deposit, and then bowing out because something better came along. But at the PhD level, this is considered a big no-no and came come back to bite you on the butt later on. But I still maintain that this is not an optimal thing to do when programs are cut back in size and people are waiting desperately to get off the waitlists and can't because someone is reserving multiple spots for themselves.

    -The End-

Yeah, I definitely agree. There are several people in my program who have literally no place to go yet. They are on waitlists (if that) and to think that people are purposely reserving multiple spots for themselves is very frustrating. I don't know. I am not claiming to know what the positions are like of those people putting down deposits at more than one place (whether Ph.D or Master's) so for all I know they have excellent reasons for doing so. But on the other hand, I would feel pretty bad knowing I was near the top of a waitlist and nothing could be done about it. Before applying this year, I never realized what an emotional roller-coaster this whole process would be. :(

  5. So, I have been accepted to Rush and a couple of other schools for Speech-Language Pathology this fall, 2011. I liked most of them but I really cannot swing the tuition at certain schools . . . I also really want to work in a hospital, so I think Rush will be it for me! I am nervous about sending in that deposit. If anyone else is going/visited/wants to talk about it/wants to remain in the honeymooner phase as long as possible, I am game! B) I did visit during the Preview Day and was VERY impressed. Really looking forward to this.

Thanks to anyone that responds, and to everyone else that is deciding or still waiting to hear back (ugh, I know) I wish you all the best! Good luck!
