  1. Hi,

It's starting to sink in now that I'm going to grad school (my fingers stay crossed and good luck vibes go out to all those still waiting). Now all of the things I've talked at length about with friends, and boiled down to concise phrases in SOPs are going to be my life for the next few years. So I thought I'd start a topic for those of us to discuss what specifically in the field we want to address, understand, or expand on. I'd love to hear what everyone's area of interest is or what population you want to work with and why. Also it's a great way to de-stress from the application process.

I'm interested in communication disorders secondary to neurological disorders/trauma (aphasia, TBI, PD, etc.). I currently work at a Parkinson's Disease center, and I really love that population. I am interested in studying more about how to improve speech (especially dysarthria, dysphagia, and hypophonia) in patients with PD.

  2. I'm a Deaf Studies major at UNF and I applied this fall to 5 different SLP grad programs, the ones that will accept with a non-CSD background.  If I don't get my first choice, I'm considering trying the online FSU Bridge program for non-CSD undergrads and reapplying next year.  Right now I've been accepted to an out-of-state school with provisions, assuming that I complete prereq coursework with a 3.25 GPA (not bad), but I can't afford to go without funding!

    My questions is...

    1)  Has anyone here completed it?

    2)  Do you think that completing those courses would give me a better chance at an SLP program?

    3)  They say that there's no gov't loans available- is that true?  I rely on Stafford loans to get me by!

I'd appreciate any insight you guys could give me.  Thanks!!

USF has an online 2nd bachelors in CSD that is only 3 semesters full-time, I am in my last semester of that program and it is a great option. I had a 2.8 in my first undergrad degree, and I have a 4.0 in the USF program and so far I've been accepted to 3 grad programs. Sometimes just having the prereqs isn't enough for some programs :/  Good luck!

  3. Gallaudet...and six of the PA state schools (Bloom, IUP, Clarion, EUP, West Chester, ESU)...three of which are rumored to notify by end of March. Well not really rumored, it's on their webiste...and I'm assuming the other three will follow suit. Such a long month...lol.

Goodness! I bet you'll be getting a ton of notices in the next 2 weeks! Gallaudet is a great school from what I've heard. Best of luck to you, I hope you hear something this Monday!

  4. Yeah, the cost of living in SF is crazy!  I have a couple friends who live in Oakland, so I'd probably shack up there if I did get in.  I lived in California until a couple years ago and my parents still live there, so if I did get in I'd want to see if I could somehow get in-state tuition...but their budget issues are so bad they probably wouldn't do much for me.  I miss the bay area though!

Me too! I'm actually going to San Fran in May to celebrate my 30th bday, I haven't been back there since I was in 7th grade! I'm going to this music festival in Napa Valley called BottleRock, I can't wait! That will be my last bit of fun before grad school lol.

  5. yeah, I can't wait to be done getting all the responses back and making that decision..even if it means days juggling those numbers and doing that not so fun math stuff- it'll be worth it in the end!

I was just asking my boyfriend earlier about how to make a spreadsheet to compare the costs between schools! I'm going to have to crunch some numbers... and I'm awful at math!!!

  6. Congrats!  When there are so many applicants, I think it really takes a strong application to even make the wait list!  I met with a professor at Pacific a couple of weeks ago who actually congratulated me on my MGH wait list spot...although Pacific proceeded to put me on their list as well.  I'm nervous about hearing from SFSU, I hope they send out decisions soon!

Congrats to you too! Yeah, I honestly can't believe I made it on the wait list. I'm excited to hear from SFSU too, but my chances of actually going to that program (although I really really want to) is slim due to the high cost of living in the Bay Area. And I'm out-of-state! I was actually born in SF and raised in Oakland until I was 10, so it would be pretty cool to be back there again. I hope we hear back next week!

  7. Congrats on ENMU. It was my fall back school as well and I was rejected. Apparently I didn't have enough pre-reqs finished. Was told to send in my application again next years once I had at least 75% of them finished.

Always amazes me that there are really no fall back schools for SLPs.

Yeah, they told me I was conditionally accepted, and that I need to take 3 more classes :/ Gonna pass on that one!

  8. Celebrating this pie day with my first acceptance to the University of Houston!

Still not sure if I'm going to accept or deny it since it all depends on my home-state results but I'm just happy to know that I'm going somewhere this Fall :)

Yayyy!!! Congrats!! I hope we hear some good news out of CA soon!!

  9. You think someone is BS-ing? Or maybe it's someone from their own school, so they might have heard first maybe through a faculty person?

Sometimes I wonder if half the stuff posted on the admissions page is pure BS.. I spoke to a professor about my worries about grad school, and mentioned GradCafe, and he said, "Yes, I believe everything I read on the internet, too." Made me think twice about just taking all that info in at face value  I wonder if all the GPA/GRE posts are inflated, too..

But anyway, GOOD LUCK TO SD APPLICANTS!!!

and GOOD LUCK TO FULLERTON APPLICANTS!!!

AND GOOD LUCK TO LOS ANGELES INTERVIEWEES THIS WEEKEND!!!

Haha, thats so true!! I post my undergrad GPA as a 2.8, sadly thats what it was lol. Good luck to all CA applicants!!!
