  1. Anyone thinking they will choose University of New Mexico?  I saw a post from someone on the results page about visiting and not liking it...anyone else have any opinions?

I saw that post too, I posted asking them to come to the forums to elaborate! I received an acceptance from UNM, and really liked what I saw about their program from their website, etc. Thats a shame :/

  2. Yikes. Did not apply to SDSU, but did to Fullerton. Now I will be anxiously waiting alongside the rest of you!

Good luck to us all! Is the quote for Friday just a starting date for notifications, and they send out notifications in waves… or do they let everyone know at the same time?

Good luck everyone applying to SDSU! I got accepted to an in-state school so my chances of moving to CA are slim, but who knows?!

  3. I can breathe a sigh of relief, I have been accepted to Radford. Phew!!!

I don't mean to sound like a broken record, but once you get your first acceptance it is fully worth all the stress that you go through. Don't EVER give up, I am convinced that everyone on this forum will get in somewhere eventually with how wonderful and dedicated everyone seems to this field. I wish good luck to everyone that is still waiting to hear good news. :)

    Congrats Tay!!!

  4. I actually double majored in CSD and deaf studies, so I do sign! And we get over 40 hours of observation here :). I'm just feeling a little clueless.

You can teach English to children abroad! My ex-boyfriend is teaching English in China right now, and he had the worst GPA in undergrad lol. That will really make your application stand out! Otherwise, just get as much work experience as possible thats related to the field. It's not over yet though, I'm still rooting for you!!!

  5. Congratulations!!! :D I am hoping for the same wonderful news! Was this your 3rd year applying? If so, what did you do differently that helped you this time around (I'm asking b/c I'm thinking of plan B, C, and D if I don't get in this year!!! So frustrating!!!)  ^_^

This was year 2 applying, but I started the process of switching professions in 2010. I had already taken 7 prerequisite classes, and got straight A's in all of them, but because my undergrad GPA was so low, it didn't help me much. So I got into a second bachelors program online, worked as a SLP-A for a year, worked at an audiology office, and now I work at a Parkinson's Disease center that has a SLP. Basically, just get a much real world experience (work or volunteering) in the field as possible! I think that helped me a lot. It's definitely very frustrating, but it can be done! Good luck!

  6. I was wondering what everyone's thoughts were on doing research or a research assistantship in grad school. I was offered partial tuition and a stipend at a pretty high-ranked school to do research on cochlear implants. It seems like the offer of a lifetime, because when else will I get to do something awesome like that? However, I'm just not sure I LOVE research, I really like working with clients and being around people. And working 20 hours a week on top of the regular grad school requirements seems daunting  :( I could go to a lower-ranked school for cheaper than this school, but I wouldn't get the great opportunity.. but I also wouldn't have to take out loans. Is anyone else thinking of going into research? I'd love to hear other's experiences!

If you have netflix, check out the documentary Sound and Fury. It might spark your interest in doing research on CI!

  7. I was also a Pre-Med major! That did take quite a hit on my cumulative GPA.  I'm so glad I found SLP while volunteering at a rehab. facility. I was supposed to be observing a fetal/maternal med. doctor, but the volunteer coordinator put me in rehab instead and I fell in "love" with SLP....must be my destiny lol.

But, being pre-med helped with a lot of the ASHA pre-reqs (non CSD ones) like biology, chem, physics, stats, calc. & so I don't necessarily regret it.

I went to x-ray school after I got my first bachelors in Psychology, and the info I learned in x-ray school has been much more helpful to me in my CSD classes than psych surprisingly! I know more about swallowing studies than most SLPs will ever need to know haha.

  8. fsustar, are you excited to hear from fsu on Monday?

Haha, that's a loaded question! I lived in Tallahassee for 8 years, and never in my wildest dreams thought I would go back, but I would be shocked if I got in at this point, and extremely grateful! I was rejected from the distance program last year, but now I'm a few weeks shy of a bachelors in CSD so hopefully that will mean something. I'm just glad to know I'll be hearing something (anything!) at this point ;) I know this has been a rough week for you jmarti, but hang in there, we're all in this together!!

  9. Has anyone done some preliminary apartment / housing hunting?  I am a total type-A personality and while I'm waiting (and while I am home sick from work today), I'm looking at possible housing options online near the remaining schools on my list... And hounding my realtor about selling our vacant townhouse that has been on (and off) the market since 2008 .... ugh, you girls/guys just coming out of undergrad, adult life can really STINK sometimes!

My hubby went to meet a recruiter last night for a company that may have a job in several cities near the schools on my list ... we are trying to prep so that as soon as I get an offer and accept it, he can immediately find/take a job and we can move.  I can commute to the school where I work from my parents' house, if he gets his job before the school year contract is over!

I'm going to hate turning 29 at the end April.  Hopefully I will know where I'm going before then.  I know there are a few other "oldies" on here like me.  The last age we ever turn, right, girls!!?!!

    I turn 30 in May ;)  I'm ok with it because I look like I'm 21 apparently, but I definitely don't feel 21!

  10. I'm so tired of obsessively checking my email. Just want this to be over soon. I am no longer following last years results, because it seems like schools are delaying their responses and not really following that timeline.

I double majored as well Jmarti! so i feel your pain lol. Took some pretty hard classes for my first major before I switched it (organic chemistry, anyone?) yupp. But, keep those hopes up. All it takes is 1 school! :)

I took organic chem as well, got a C- and was SO HAPPY lol. I was a pre-med major, then switched to Psychology in my junior year. The math & science killed my GPA.

  11. anybody know of any online programs where I can take intro to audiology this summer without having prereqs? I just looked at utah states courses and it looks like you need two prerequisite courses before you can take their intro audiology

Look at USF's distance classes, I'm pretty sure they offer that, just not sure which semester.

  12. Stats are only stats. You have so much to offer as a person and in terms of experience, and I'm sure all of the adcoms see that. Numbers only mean so much, it's the rest of the person that makes a difference.

Agreed! My stats suck, but I have a lot of really good work experience so I'm hoping that counts for something. My boyfriend got me a gift card to Massage Envy for valentines day and I've been saving it to use after I get my first rejection notice lol

  13. Darn. Maybe only current USF students who were accepted were notified today? Or only first round acceptances?

I am a current USF student (distance program), maybe only Tampa campus students were notified? Anythings possible, but I doubt very many letters were sent out today. None of my classmates posted anything :/
