  1. That would be an amazing find! My younger 1st year med student room mates are currently having a party and I'm now looking at new apartments. The good thing about my institution is that we have a lot of subsidized housing (studios, etc.); NYC rent is absurd.
  2. For those fellows that didn't see today's e-mail: http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2010/nsf10073/nsf10073.jsp?org=DUE I've deferred the NSF to take the NDSEG, but apparently those on "reserve" status are eligible to apply. I'm very interested in this given that there is a well known group that does work related to mine that I'd love to work with for a year. However, I'm worried about losing my NDSEG. Anyone know if it's possible to do both? hehe, while at it, why not put in an NRSA?
  3. I'm wondering if anyone knows of someone with a similar situation and/or the outcome. I applied for the NSF GRFP and was offered the award. I accepted it and have chosen to defer for two years so that I can also take the NDSEG. My PI just ran out of funding and is basically taking a teaching job, so there is no future for me in his lab. But, I was able to hop on another project at a different lab, within the same major field. However, my research project is going to be very different. The GRFP requires prior approval for major changes to research plans. In this case I have no choice. Has anyone ever heard of someone losing their GRFP because their updated research plan wasn't accepted and they had to move? I can probably finish up my PhD within the next three years with the NDSEG but having the GRFP there just in case is a nice thing, so I'd prefer not to lose that.

I expect to be done in 3 years though.

I'm in a similar position; what made you decide to take the NSF (or DOE) over the NDSEG?

Actually this is what I was wondering about. I know NDSEG is harder to get than an NSF, but is it true that one carries more prestige? Also, I would more likely apply for grants in the future through the NSF - should this factor into what one should choose? I expect to be in grad school for only about 3 more years.

nice screen name, by the way. Best of luck!

Also, I thought you had to take the first year of the NSF before deferring. Am I mistaken in thinking this?

Right, but if you had to choose... I'm in my 2nd year and one or the other would be fine. I'm just curious to see what others would choose and why.

So, for those who were offered the NSF GRFP award, what field are you in and which fellowship would you take if you're also offered the NDSEG?
  11. Hey I'd get in touch with some of those universities and let them know that you have your own funding and ask if they'll reconsider. You'll be a lot more attractive if they know they don't have to support you as much as they would have otherwise.
  12. Good luck with the NRSA!
  13. Yes definitely. Even put it on your application for NDSEG or NSF (maybe get your mentor to mention it in a letter of rec) for next year.
  14. I'm drunk and literally afraid to log in for fear i click the wrong button!
  15. I won an goddamned NSF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  16. I think the program announcement said something like 1600 though, didn't it?
  17. Damn, I thought it'd be the first!
  18. whew, on those stats, btw. Also, I think I remember getting a little crazy about these kinds of posts last year (for no good reason), but here you go, posted on the GRFP site today: GRFP will be unavailable from 11:00 PM ET Monday April 5th - 5:00 AM ET Tuesday, April 6th for scheduled maintenance. We apologize for any inconvenience.
  19. It'd make Monday so much less Monday if they'd just get them out today...
  20. Haha, I read this line over 5 times, each time thinking I must have seen it wrong the last time.
  21. I remember this from last year. The results were posted late at night and then rejection e-mails were still being received hours later. I don't remember what happened with the 2nd batch though. I finally had my first GRFP dream last night. I dreamt that I started in a new lab and then got my results late on a Friday night and told everyone about it. Later in the dream I realized that I had only dreamt that I had won (meta-dreaming?) and was embarrassed to tell everyone that there was a chance that I didn't actually win.
  22. I'd love if it was an April Fool's joke in the sense that they were sending out notices tomorrow instead of early next week. After last year I feel like the owe it to us to get the results out ASAP.
  23. Hi All Just to pass on some potentially new info, I just spoke with someone at the call center and they said results are expected to go out early next week. So, we have a full weekend of anxious waiting ahead of us! When I applied I figured it'd be just a sweet line on my CV, and now it turns out I actually need the award to be able to do what I want for a thesis project. The wait is actually making me go even more grey.

I completely agree. Were you able to fit in any references?
