I'm in my 2nd year and although we did have a stats course, it was pretty basic (it ended in simple regression). The MA in stats covers a lot of things pertinent to my work so I think it would be useful. I'm in the middle of my 2nd year of the PhD and finished with coursework. The MA in stats is only 8 courses, and these have sections offered at night for working students. I figured I'd take one night class a semester and take 2/semester when I'm just writing. So, I don't think it's going to be terribly disruptive. I've heard of people doing this, and heard someone else in the program talking about it. I'll see if anyone actually has. If any other readers have actually done this, I'd of course like to hear about your experience.

Just wondering if anyone has or know someone who has worked on a separate master's degree during their PhD dissertation research. I do neuro and was thinking about getting an MA in stats. Did you have the time? Did it piss off your PI or was she/he supportive? Did your graduate school know? Did you pay out of pocket or get financial aid?

Great, thanks a lot and good luck with your application! Also, it doesn't seem like they take publications in edited volumes. Am I correct in thinking this? -Kevin

Hello, I didn't see an NDSEG thread, so I'm sorry if I'm creating some sort of redundancy. Anyway, This is my first time applying for the award, and I see that they ask you to fill in some of your previous awards and honors. Last cycle I got an honorable mention for the NSF GRFP; should I list this on my NDSEG application? I'm worried that they might pass me over thinking that its likely that I'm reapplying for and may win the NSF fellowship. Any thoughts on this? Kevin

Yeah I wasn't pleased about that.

I keep trying to convince myself that I'm up waiting for my data to finish processing... UGH! I wish I got some wine.

Out of curiosity, what fields are you people in who get so little funding and where is your university? Here our stipends are $29,000 a year. My school is in NYC, however.

I'm just posting to help towards the next hundredth post. Oh the waiting. A haiku is to follow shortly.

May 15th?? Why is it that I'm always waiting for the next 2 weeks to pass?!
-
I don't think it's their fault really. I'm sure they're doing a lot of waiting on various approvals.
-
I wish they'd just grant us at least some access to the teragrid already. I have some data that needs processing and our dual quad core mac pro isn't quite cutting it. (just kidding, it is.)

Sweet! I just realized that I'm finally caffeinated!

I like the limbo party avatar. I REALLY can't wait for this to be over.

We'll probably get our DDIG results back before hearing about the GRFP.
-
You should get them to let you choose the reviewers. You didn't mention who your PI is in your application, did you?

C'mon, we'll never get into the National Academy of Science believing in purgatory!

Are we pretty much over the "early April" promise?

This was my impression as well.

I believe what it means is that this year they want to fund 3,075 new fellows.
-
I don't think awards made during previous years are an issue. The number of awards have been relatively constant over the past several years, so even without an increase they would still be able to fund current fellows and the baseline number of new fellows. With an increase, we'd just see more new fellows.
-
Some people who didn't get in probably did write crap proposals. I'm sure it's not the case for each comparison but I'd be surprised if most of the applications of those people in limbo are not better than most of those applications that were rejected. There is some luck component to the game, but it's not completely random.
-
It's going to be so irritating for me if it turns out to be 1176 AND that you, but not I, get the award. haha
-
I spoke with two individuals. One said there would be no more rejections and only HM's/awarded applications. The other said that it's very unlikely that there would be any more rejections.
-
hmmmm.... According to the person I talked to, they don't have any way of telling you whether or not you have a shot in hell of getting the award. (I'm paraphrasing, by the way)
