  1. A studio apartment in NYC for $1200?! Certainly not in Manhattan, right? Or even Brooklyn...maybe Astoria? I paid almost that for a teeny tiny room in a 3 BR apartment in Manhattan. The cheapest studio or one-bedroom I ever heard of in Manhattan, outside of Harlem/Washington Heights, was $1800.

One of the many reasons I left...

That would be an amazing find! My younger 1st year med student room mates are currently having a party and I'm now looking at new apartments. The good thing about my institution is that we have a lot of subsidized housing (studios, etc.); NYC rent is absurd.

  2. For those fellows that didn't see today's e-mail: http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2010/nsf10073/nsf10073.jsp?org=DUE

I've deferred the NSF to take the NDSEG, but apparently those on "reserve" status are eligible to apply. I'm very interested in this given that there is a well known group that does work related to mine that I'd love to work with for a year. However, I'm worried about losing my NDSEG. Anyone know if it's possible to do both? hehe, while at it, why not put in an NRSA? :)

  3. I'm wondering if anyone knows of someone with a similar situation and/or the outcome. I applied for the NSF GRFP and was offered the award. I accepted it and have chosen to defer for two years so that I can also take the NDSEG. My PI just ran out of funding and is basically taking a teaching job, so there is no future for me in his lab. But, I was able to hop on another project at a different lab, within the same major field. However, my research project is going to be very different.

The GRFP requires prior approval for major changes to research plans. In this case I have no choice. Has anyone ever heard of someone losing their GRFP because their updated research plan wasn't accepted and they had to move?

I can probably finish up my PhD within the next three years with the NDSEG but having the GRFP there just in case is a nice thing, so I'd prefer not to lose that.

  4. Here the choice seems pretty obvious -- take both, and use the NSF only if by some unforeseen circumstance you need to (you can use it for funding in years 4 and 5).

I expect to be done in 3 years though.

  5. Well, lucky for you guys it looked like I will be one of those turning down the NDSEG. I also won the NSF and new DOE but I think I should be able to graduate in three more years so there is no point in taking two. Not sure how I was so ridiculously lucky this year -- it was my third time applying.

I'm in a similar position; what made you decide to take the NSF (or DOE) over the NDSEG?

  6. Maybe some people will turn down the award, opening up room for you, I guess. (But who the heck would turn down the NDSEG? So much prestige!!)

Actually this is what I was wondering about. I know NDSEG is harder to get than an NSF, but is it true that one carries more prestige? Also, I would more likely apply for grants in the future through the NSF - should this factor into what one should choose? I expect to be in grad school for only about 3 more years.

  7. You can accept both fellowships by deferring the NSF for two years.

Also, I thought you had to take the first year of the NSF before deferring. Am I mistaken in thinking this?

  8. You can accept both fellowships by deferring the NSF for two years.

Right, but if you had to choose... I'm in my 2nd year and one or the other would be fine. I'm just curious to see what others would choose and why.

  9. Congratulations to everyone who received the fellowship or a honorable mention.

I got the fellowship!!! I was absolutely shocked yesterday and I am still in disbelief today.

This was my first time applying and I am in my last year of undergrad. Unfortunately, all of the universities I applied to rejected me. So now what? Hopefully I can secure a spot somewhere. Is anyone else in this same predicament?

    Again, congratulations!!!

Hey I'd get in touch with some of those universities and let them know that you have your own funding and ask if they'll reconsider. You'll be a lot more attractive if they know they don't have to support you as much as they would have otherwise.

  10. Just woke up at 3am (east coast) to see that I got an HM...not going to lie, I'm slightly disappointed since this was my one and only shot, but better than nothing for sure. NRSA here I come...

    Good luck with the NRSA!

  11. first time applier, got an HM. Is it worth including an HM on a CV? Meaning, is it a big enough accomplishment to be put on a CV?

Yes definitely. Even put it on your application for NDSEG or NSF (maybe get your mentor to mention it in a letter of rec) for next year.

  12. I remember reading that 2000 or so awards are being issued this year.

I think the program announcement said something like 1600 though, didn't it?

  13. Shucks, thanks. :) I'm hoping the fact that it's interesting will be a boost for me. But like you, I'm very glad it's out of my hands now.

It was on their web site I believe. It varies by field but I recall the average GPA being around 3.8. That said, the average GRE was in the high 1200s to mid 1300s I believe, and they probably put a bit more weight on GREs than they do GPA.

Remember that broader impacts applies not only to you but to your research as well!

    whew, on those stats, btw.

Also, I think I remember getting a little crazy about these kinds of posts last year (for no good reason), but here you go, posted on the GRFP site today:

GRFP will be unavailable from 11:00 PM ET Monday April 5th - 5:00 AM ET Tuesday, April 6th for scheduled maintenance. We apologize for any inconvenience.

  14. Okay, was just told by NSF that "the results will be hopefully posted at the beginning of this week so hopefully within the next couple of days". So, I am guessing tomorrow night. What I don't get is how they don't know when they will post even a day or two before it happens...I understand not being able to predict weeks in advance, but they can't figure out if they will be done with what they have to do by the end of the day? For a place that loves deadlines, they sure are disappointing when it comes to meeting them.

It'd make Monday so much less Monday if they'd just get them out today...

  15. A friend of mine who got it last year told me her notification email was time-stamped 3 AM, so I suspect they enter all of the names and emails to be notified and then set it send the next day so the system starts spitting them out at midnight or something.

I remember this from last year. The results were posted late at night and then rejection e-mails were still being received hours later. I don't remember what happened with the 2nd batch though.

I finally had my first GRFP dream last night. I dreamt that I started in a new lab and then got my results late on a Friday night and told everyone about it. Later in the dream I realized that I had only dreamt that I had won (meta-dreaming?) and was embarrassed to tell everyone that there was a chance that I didn't actually win.

  16. I'd love if it was an April Fool's joke in the sense that they were sending out notices tomorrow instead of early next week. After last year I feel like the owe it to us to get the results out ASAP.

  17. Hi All

Just to pass on some potentially new info, I just spoke with someone at the call center and they said results are expected to go out early next week. So, we have a full weekend of anxious waiting ahead of us!

When I applied I figured it'd be just a sweet line on my CV, and now it turns out I actually need the award to be able to do what I want for a thesis project. The wait is actually making me go even more grey.

  18. Did anyone else find it hard to write the "Summary of Goals" statement? I felt like it was impossible to cram everything they asked for into 3000 characters. I write pretty concisely, but I think that 4000 characters would have been the minimum necessary to address all their topics.

I completely agree. Were you able to fit in any references?
