  1. I did not apply.  Did you?  I'm hoping the send out decisions next week, but it might be another 3 weeks before we know anything.

I did. I applied for one of the positions. I'll hear back before the second week of April (assuming I get in).

  2. Congrats to all!  Is anyone else "patiently" awating a decision from UW?  I know it typically takes them until late March, but hurry up already!  I'd like to make my final decision!

I'm "patiently" waiting and by that I mean I'll probably be checking everyday from here on out. Did you apply for any of their assistantships?

  3. So...it's been about a week since they said they would contact their IT department about my transcript issue. I haven't heard anything back and my app still says it needs a transcript. Should I contact them again or would that be too much?

Thanks for all your help, everyone!

  4. I think as long as you've called it to their attention, you should be ok. In their emailed reply, did they happen to mention anything about your transcripts? You could always request that your undergrad resend your transcript to UMD.

I had a similar issue with Pratt, which I posted in "Admissions Depts: The Good, Bad & Ugly".

They didn't mention anything in their response, so I emailed them back about the transcript. I got another email back saying their IT Dept. was contacted and would look into it. I'm more worried about funding than about getting in (although I'm worried about that too!). We'll see how it goes!

I saw your post about Pratt; I was frustrated reading it! They should have at least responded to you even if it was just to tell you that they're working on it and haven't forgotten about you.

  5. Alaina13, I would highly recommend contacting the Graduate School ASAP. I had a similar issue & only after my application status was changed to "Complete" did the iSchool receive it for review.

    Good luck!

I just received an email from them and they waived my GRE scores, but still haven't taken the missing transcript off. I really hope this doesn't mess up my chances of getting in :(

  6. University of Washington has a deadline of February 1st, but their priority deadline is today for scholarships. However, you do not have to submit a completed application today. What I mean by that is, your recommendations don't have to be in by today. It might be kind of a scramble though :\

  7. Finally getting my butt in gear and applying this year! (That rhymed). I'm applying to:

    1. Simmons College
    2. University of Washington
    3. University of Pittsburgh

I'm interested in database work and digitization :)

  8. You're lucky you've got the possibility for in-state tuition! I'm from New Hampshire; we only have tuition remission agreements with University of Rhode Island and Southern Connecticut University, and I don't want to go either of those.

I really want to be in New York too because of all the internship opportunities, but financially it would be difficult unless they give me really, really good financial aid.

  9. I'm thinking of attending school to work with digital libraries, and I'm really interested in the digitization of rare books and manuscripts.

I've looked at several schools and the U.S. News list for top schools, but I'm honestly not sure because they all look good to me. I do know that UW-Madison is digitizing their books for Google Books, so that is a definite plus for me for that program.

Is anyone currently studying in this concentration or aware of which programs are good? I really just want another perspective besides U.S. News'. :P

    Thanks!

    -Alaina

PS: This is for Fall 12

  10. Hi everyone!

I thought I would start a thread for Fall 2012.

Come here to discuss what schools you're applying to and anything relating to the application process!

    I'm planning/thinking of applying to:

    Simmons College

    Catholic University of America

    Pratt Institute

    University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee/Madison (???)

Maybe University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, University of Washington, and Syracuse.

I'm interesting in digital libraries and rare books/manuscripts and their digitization.

  11. Here is an example from Simmons:

    Statement of Purpose :

In 750-1,000 words, please describe your career objectives and how GSLIS at Simmons College could contribute to your meeting these goals. Please incorporate answers to the following questions:

    a. Why are you seeking a degree in library and information science?

    b. What strengths would you bring to GSLIS and to the library, archives, and information professions?

    c. What are the most exciting challenges and opportunities in the information professions today?

I think that, in general, this is what programs are looking for.

    Good luck!

    -Alaina
